Aynsley & Aidan

Let me start by saying oh my gosh the fashion and flowers at this urban city wedding are utterly immense. They seem to be prominent in every picture captured by the fabulous Miss Gen Photography and lighting up my page. If I was in charge of the lens I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from snapping them at every angle too.

From the bridesmaids in their mis-match black dresses, to the bride in her sumptuous satin gown from Mirror Mirror Bridal, and finishing both looks beautifully the organic, wild bouquets from JamJar Flowers. I’m surprised I managed to tear my eyes away long enough to include the industrial LSO St Luke’s wedding venue in my selection of pictures for you(!) but of course I did, as they are equally as breathtaking too. Have you seen the twinkling lights, floral arch and gorgeous tablescape yet? Full of even more beautiful blooms, a dessert table to rival all dessert tables and just an abundance of smiley happy faces.

If you’re looking for Autumnal style and elegance then STOP you’ve found it.

Story

Aynsley the Bride: We met through a mutual friend in London over ten years ago and have been together ever since. Aidan proposed on a road trip through Big Sur, California a year before the wedding.

I’m Canadian and Aidan is Irish, so the majority of our guests flew in from abroad. We were so grateful to have our family and friends from home come all the way to London to celebrate with us, so we needed to show them a good time! The most important thing was to make the day about our guests, involving them as much as possible, providing an open bar, music to get everyone dancing, followed by a fabulous after party…. really just ensuring that we were hosting the best party possible!

Vibe

It was an urban London wedding in the middle of October, therefore felt very cosy and glam. Guests wore black tie and we served food like pumpkin pie, based loosely on Canadian Thanksgiving which many guests were missing that weekend back home! The venue was surrounded with fall leaves, and JamJar used big, wild floral bunches of deep plums, red and orange. Star cloth and hanging festoon lights created a romantic atmosphere, and the flower arch we were married under during the ceremony was later used as a photo booth.

Outfits

Initially I didn’t want an actual wedding dress and instead was set on a casual white shift. I wasn’t going to go near any ‘wedding dress shops’ but was convinced by my bridesmaids to try at least one or two… once I did, I realised it was all part of the fun. I felt very glam and ‘old hollywood’ in my champagne-coloured satin dress.
Aidan looks great in navy so went with that for him and his groomsmen.
My bridesmaids are spread around the world, living in NYC, LA, Vancouver and London so to make it easier, I just asked them to choose any long black dress they liked – I know they all have great taste! Options and ideas were shared via a whatsapp group and in the end I loved how each is slightly different and everyone felt completely comfortable with what they were wearing.
My mom brought my grandmother’s collection of rhinestone earrings from the 40’s, and each girl wore a pair which helped to tie the looks together.

Flowers

I have been following JamJar on instagram for some time. They work with some of my favourite restaurants in London, so I see their beautiful flowers often. I’m in love with their relaxed, seasonally colourful, wildflower style. The founder Melissa is great, she really understood my vision from our first conversation over tea at her house! I would use them again in a heartbeat.

Ceremony

We had one of our best friends officiate. He read a ceremony and vows that we wrote ourselves. We are not religious so it was quite lighthearted and personal; having Niall read really helped it to feel intimate and relaxed. Since we used the same space for the ceremony, reception and dinner, we had to be creative with the format. St Luke’s is home to the London Symphony Orchestra and has an opera-house like balcony that wraps around the venue. Close family were seated on the ground floor around us and friends gathered on the upper balcony. I was worried this was unconventional but I think it gave the guests a great view of the beautiful venue and meant everyone had a front row seat for the ceremony!

Photography

We wanted something a bit different than your typical wedding portrait photography. When searching online and through social media, Miss Gen’s visually stunning work really stood out. We immediately knew it was exactly the style we wanted and were so excited that she was available!

We could not be happier with our wedding images – we absolutely love the artistic element and the way she truly captured every detail. She was very professional and subtle on the day, and there was no awkward posing – the moments she caught feel very genuinely natural. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an amazing wedding photographer!

Favourite photo

We have too many favourites to choose from but the standout has to be the one of us in front of the red phone booth at Smithfield Market – it looks like a scene from a movie. We love the colours and how she captured so vividly the vibe of our adopted home of East London!

First Dance

Our first dance was to Otis Redding’s ‘Sitting on the Dock of the Bay’, one of our favourites but also my late Dad’s favourite song. Having this as our first dance reminded us that he was there in spirit.

Entertainment

We had an absolutely brilliant live band called Atlantic Soul Orchestra. They had everyone up dancing from beginning to end. This was followed by the after party at a nearby private club, where a DJ friend kept everyone on the dance floor until the early hours.

Memorable Moments

The whole day was a dream, but the ceremony was unexpectedly one of the highlights for us. We were both nervous about reading our vows, but as soon as my mom walked me down the aisle, it was the most calm, exciting, happy feeling to know that everyone we loved was in that room. We both truly enjoyed standing up there and reading our vows to each other.

Words of Wisdom

Something will go wrong no matter how organised you are – let it go! Chances are you are the only one who will notice or be bothered by it. The people you love are there to celebrate with you, not to judge you on minor details!

If you don’t have a wedding planner, at least hire someone to be there on the day to make sure everything is running smoothly so you and your family can just enjoy the day.

Plan it exactly how you two want, don’t be influenced by anyone else, it’s your day after all. Enjoy the process. And you don’t need to stick to traditions.. it’s 2017 after all!
