Behind the Scenes

They’re Back….And There’s One Extra!

February 17th, 2012

Afternoon lovelies….firstly it’s Friday (woo!) secondly we have a bit of new stuff to share with you (double woo!)

You may have noticed that Jenny and Vix have been a wee bit absent these last few weeks and there is a valid reason for that. Whilst we (i.e. Adam and I) have been sorting out our big “project” it made sense that we let them have a bit of a well earned rest whilst we got on with things for a bit – plus we had so much real wedding pretty and behind-the-scenes info to provide you with we thought we’d get on with that first then start “afresh” as it were.

You may also notice another blondie on the far right hand side, for those of you that don’t know this is Naomi who was one of our RMW Real brides last year, Naomi writes the lifestyle blog Rocked By Life and is now joining Team RMW to do a bit of freelancing for us along with Jenny and Vix. This is obviously all kinds of awesome. (And if you missed it it was Naomi who wrote the Big Sexy post the other week…)

So what will they be doing exactly…..

Well every few weeks or so we’ll be putting our heads together and coming up with some topics for discussion – a bit like an on-line slumber party if you will. We’ll give you our opinions and tell you about our own personal experiences on subject “X” and then we’ll invite you to come tell us yours. It will be fun promise – we will even provide virtual cake and endless cups of tea.

Or if you’d prefer maybe even a cocktail or two…. ;-)

There will also be a new column every other Friday (ish) called “Ask Jenny” this is where you get the opportunity to ask Jenny ANYTHING YOU WANT. And I mean anything, from W-day related woes to real life dilemmas. Madam Jenny is the one of the wisest and kindest women I have ever met, she planned an immense big day, had it featured in a fancy magazine, bought not one, not two but THREE dresses and all whilst she was carrying baby O. Jenny has been a great source of advice and inspiration for RMW and I know she will be for you lovely folk too.

You can email Jenny at askjenny@rockmywedding.co.uk and we will post your question (you can of course use ANON or an alias if you would prefer) and Jenny’s response, the rest of us will then join in with our two pence worth too.

Vixen Vix will be assisting us in our quest for more D.I.Y delicious and free downloadables (we have a queue of ideas already people – watch this space!), providing her (lovely) face for various beauty tutorials and keeping us up to date with her own W-day plans.

Naomi will be mainly providing the gritty. That’s not to say she won’t be providing the pretty too…. it’s just she knows how to tell it like it is more than anyone else I know. And she’s been flying the flag for RMW these last six months in an epic way, we are so glad to have her “back”.

So you gorgeous lot, next week we can tell you even more about what the future holds for RMW and we’ll be holding our first RMW community sleepover.

Who’s bringing the wine?

Big Jenny, Vix and Naomi Love

I Believe In You.

February 15th, 2012

Apart from “I love you” and “I do” these to me are the most important, significant and meaningful words my husband has ever said to me.

Before I begin I just want you to know that this isn’t a post about wedding pretty, there will be no delicious details or inspirational ideas for you to steal and for that I apologise.

What it is is a piece about marriage. And not a perfect idealistic marriage either. It’s about a marriage where there have been a series of major highs, some memorable lows, sacrifice, compromise and unexpected change.

I guess what I’m saying is it’s a piece about real marriage and the only one I have any experience of and therefore feel I have the knowledge to write about is my own.

So then here goes…..*deep breath*

For those of you who don’t know I met James on a blind date just over eight years ago – interestingly he was actually supposed to be a fireman called Matt whom cancelled a few days before. I won’t lie and tell you I wasn’t a little disappointed to discover Mr skilled-with-giant-hose was going to be a no-show (I was, the shallow Madam that I am) but I am a firm believer in fate and Mr O’Shea was (excuse the potential mush here folks)….the most beautiful man I ever saw.

I’m sure our pre-married relationship was similar to the majority of yours, enjoying amazing holidays, spending time with friends, moving in together, moving again (erm…seven times anyone?) and generally loving spending as much time as we possibly could together.

And we, like the fairytales and the romance novels and the films where it all ends in that big kissing cresendo thought once we were joined together in holy matrimony it would carry on much like before.

Only it didn’t. Because the rose-tinted vision of us both carrying on climbing our chosen career ladders and starting a family became a distant memory once I decided that actually, my life-long dream was to start my own company and I was going to work my butt off to make it happen.

James didn’t sign up to a partnership where we would go for weeks with barely seeing each other, we would need to refuse endless nights out offers from friends and every holiday would be spent with me glued to my iPhone or tapping away on my laptop.

It has been way less than ideal.

And then came what is now fondly* known at RMW HQ, in the O’Shea household and amongst our nearest and dearest as “The Black Summer”.

Several unexpected events occurred in June 2011, Adam and I entered into what was probably the most intense project of our “day job” to date, a multi- million pound take-over that saw us working significantly longer hours than usual and not having a spare second to think about RMW until we were in the car and on the way home, when to be honest all I wanted to do was fall into bed.

At the same time as aforementioned project we also got hacked, and then a third of our team left. The future was seemingly not filled with sunshine and prosperity.

But we carried on regardless and did the best we could, sometimes not sleeping for a few days in a row. And this was possibly the hardest time of all for James and I, I don’t think anyone can wave their hands in the air and say they are a whole bunch of fun when they are tired, irritable and look like death. I certainly wasn’t.

And then our readership dropped by 35%. Or at least it looked like it had, even on the holy grail of blog statistic measurements that is Google Analytics. So for a few months we felt like we were failing, where had everyone gone? there was simply no option for us to work any harder than we already were and after basking in the glow that continual growth and subsequent success brings you I don’t mind admitting it was a bitter pill to swallow.

There was a defining moment though. Me, a crumpled deflated heap on the living room floor, feeling sorry for myself and looking back, more than a little defeatist and James, looking at me intently and frowning.

James: I know this whole situation is unbelievably shi*e right now but I promise it will get better.

Me (possible wailing): But how do you know that?

James: Because I’ve seen how hard you’ve worked and all the crap you’ve put up with and it might seem that you’re at your lowest point right now you still get up every day and throw everything you’ve got into that website and you bloody deserve for it to be a success.

Me (increased wailing) : But I just can’t see how we can do anymore than we are already…..and I know these last few years have been a great deal less than perfect and I just feel like I’m letting everyone down…

James: Who are you letting down? only yourself if you don’t pull yourself together and get the hell on with turning this situation on its head rather than just moping about it…

Me (Major wailing): But that sounds so harsh! I really am trying so hard and I just need you to support me…

James: I am supporting you, every step of the way, I love you, I respect you and and I want to spend the rest of my life with you but most of all I believe in you, I have always believed in you.

And that lovelies was all I needed to hear. Because he is my rock. My shoulder to cry on, my piece of tough when the rough gets going. The one constant ray of hope and light when everything else appears dark and bleak. He’s got my back. And I’ve got his.

And you know what? He was right. Turns out when our hosting providers moved over to some kind of cloud-web thingamy (no idea – ask Adam) all of our links and searches broke and we didn’t even realise. Imagine your website or blog having to get back all of the search engine rankings it has achieved in that last two years because it essentially went to zero – that’s what happened to us.

As it happens once we got “fixed” (again no clue – Adam did try and explain but I was lost after the first five minutes of explanation) it transpired our readership had in fact grown substantially, in the last six months the amount of you lovelies visiting RMW has doubled and after taking the reins of all things ‘social media’ our Twitter followers and Facebook fans have trebled.

We’re doing alright Jack.

But actually I just want to say a few things about that. Because as well as we’ve done and as much as we’ve achieved I just want to do the whole “proud wife” thing and say a few words about what my husband has achieved whilst he has been supporting your truly in following her dreams:

James has worked really hard, he’s fulfilled his progress ambitions for the last six months and continues to excel in his chosen field. I never questioned that he would of course – I believe in him as much as he believes in me. And I know he will continue to kick some serious property development ass regardless of the current economic climate or the fact that so many of his so-called “contemporaries” have told him that he can’t.

And I will go on supporting him and believing in him until death do us part because that’s what I signed up for.

Marriage isn’t a bed of roses or a 24/7 state of euphoria, sometimes it’s bloody hard work. But it is always, always worth it.

Promise.

And on that note I guess I should explain what all these images are about….

During “The Black Summer” Polly Alexandre asked if James and I would ponce around London for the American master of film Jonathan Canlas and his FIND (film is not dead) workshop. I of course said yes and may have told Mr O’Shea a little white lie about it being a very small shoot with just a few photographers….not walking around the streets of London with several hundred of the great British public.

And when I told him I would then be posting them on RMW to accompany this post he said:

“Oh no, you’re not going to use the one where I look like I’ve got a chin like Bruce Forsyth are you?”

Me: “Don’t be silly of course not, besides I think you look extraordinarily handsome in all of the pictures…”

Now, I said all you needed for a happy (albeit real) marriage was love and belief, I didn’t say you couldn’t tell some small fibs along the way if absolutely necessary…

;-)

Next week I have some news on a rather time-consuming but significant “project” we have been working on behind the scenes that has finally come to a stage where we can share.

And just in case this post has in anyway made you doubt our commitment to RMW (I tried my best to provide an honest and open account without appearing wishy washy) then please, please don’t, we’re here all guns blazing for 2012 and beyond.

Would love to know from those of you still planning, or those of you that are already married, any similar situations you may have been party to or any career-changing plans that have occurred unexpectedly during your relationship.

Big Thanks A Million For Sticking With Us Through The Rough Love

*it is fondly know as “The Black Summer” because as rubbish as it seemed at the time, it was without doubt the best thing that ever happened to us – all will be revealed next week folks.

The National Wedding Show – Partners For 2012.

February 15th, 2012

* A short post for first thing, more coming up at 10am…

Last year saw Rock My Wedding selected as official partners of the National Wedding Show, we were beyond thrilled and also if we’re honest, more than a wee bit nervous.

We have to hold seminars? for hundreds of brides? but what about if we don’t have anything interesting to say?!

As is happens you guys were ACE. You turned up in your droves to hear All About The Pretty and we couldn’t be more grateful.

So then, the good news is you rated our stand so highly in the survey (yup we were rated in an actual NWS survey – scary stuff)…. that they have asked us to be partners again for the whole of 2012…..

I thought I couldn’t possibly be any more excited about seeing even more of you this month and in March…

Then we discovered that because of our association with NWS our brand is All.Over.The.Tube.

Cue Adam and I running up and down the escalators taking many a picture with our iPhones much like you might do if you were about twelve.

Have a butchers at the NWS website and let us know if you’d like to come see us for a one to one consultation – I love hearing about W-day plans, just email booking@rockmywedding.co.uk with what date and location you are attending.

Big The Tube! Our Brand Is On The TUBE! Love

P.S Have a bit of a “reveal all” post coming up at 10 am, am actually bricking it like never before.

The RMW Real Bride Hen Do.

February 14th, 2012

Before I begin I just need to make it clear that Adam and I can take very little credit for the amazing RMW Real bride Hen Do, it was the brain child of our real brides, headed up by Shirley, with Kim from the Pink Pumpkin organising all of the activities and details with one wave of her perfectly manicured hand.

As well as Shirley, Kelly, Jo, Alex, Amanda and Celine some of our other RMW bride finalists also joined in the festivities – Laura, Lisa, Amy, Larissa, Emma, Laura B, Rachel and Jenny…

And they were joined by make-up artist Mariam Jensen, hair maestro Severin Hubert, his wife Roz and the rest of their team, Sam from Mamfii Bridal and Jo from Something Blue PR…. Good job the folks at The Swan provided an endless stream of cupcakes and cocktails.

We had a really great time, I spent the majority of the day killing myself laughing and thought all of the girls were just gorgeous, we are so lucky to have such lovely ladies as part of the RMW crew.

With huge thanks to Ben at Touch for capturing all of the fun, humour and general merriment.

As I mentioned the do was at The Swan at the Globe in their swanky function room, think dreamy decor and spectacular views of the River Thames, St Pauls Catherdral and the Millennium Bridge – the perfect backdrop for Ben to capture all of our brides in their foxy finery.

Kim from The Pink Pumpkin had organised two main craft tasks for the day, D.I.Y decor in the form of painting your own initial (you can buy the plain card letters from Hobbycraft – genius for a multitude of W-day uses) and jewellery design.

Sam from Mamfii had provided a vast selection of delicate beads and swarovski crystals and was a dab hand with the pliers – our brides created some seriously pretty pieces, in fact I am hoping to see some bespoke baubles in their big day reports….

Sam from Mamfii also provided a range of fabulous frocks for our brides to try on (yes we tried to get Adam in one but unfortunately he refused…) and I have to say I thought some of the gowns were literally “made” for certain girls – check out Jo in the strapless floaty number.

Lunch was a fancy afternoon tea, with crustless cucumber sandwiches, carrot cake and a delicious selection of chocolate treats with various toppings. I think we all may have indulged in a wee bit too much sugar but…. who cares?

Severin Hubert was on hand with his immense equipment and styling products making everyone look red-carpet worthy, Rachel ended up with the biggest hair I had ever seen – I was very jealous, Rachel if you’re reading I am expecting to see some serious beehive action for W-day please….

And in true Charlotte/Sev tradition I had to ask him to create a never-seen-before barnet “creation” for me, and having neglected to decorate my “C” thought I could combine DIY with erm…. hair styling, i.e. have a giant C secured onto the back of my head…

Me: Sev I want this C on my head please.
Sev: I beg your pardon? you want this C in your hair?
Me: Yep – At least I won’t forget what my name begins with…
Sev: Honestly Charlotte I do other industry professional’s hair and they want so much sophistication…you just want crazy
Me: Wouldn’t do for us all to be the same now would it ;-)

And true to Sev’s amazing skills my C was Lady Ga Ga gorgeous in no time, I was actually slightly gutted when I had to take it out… (although Adam did make me wear it into the service station where I received some mighty strange looks..)

One of the main highlights of the day was seeing just how flawless “face-hate” Alex really is – this girl has no freakin’ clue how darn pretty she is and I have no idea what she is concerned about when it comes to her W-day pictures, if she can look this amazing in an every day scenario then what is she going to look like as the bride?

Unbelievable that’s what.

And can I just mention Kelly’s luscious locks? so long…so shiny , Sev had to walk about 10 yards away from her just to unwind the curling tongs. Oh and Amanda’s mohican – LOVED that. And Celine’s cute green dress, I wanted to steal it whilst she was upping it in the glamour stakes in full-on bridal wear.

Obviously I didn’t – that would be rude.

Real Bride Jo has the most perfect skin – honestly, like porcelain velvet. I want whatever she’s having please… And Mariam Jensen painted on some sexy winged black eyeliner that made Jo’s eyes all sultry Bardot-esque, have a look at our 60′s siren post if you want to re-create.

All of the girls had their pictures taken with a selection of their letters, brand new accessories and various gowns – Ben from Touch was a real super star, he didn’t stop snapping all day.

Some of my favourite images are those that were taken on the balcony with the big smoke lit up like a film set, I may originate from the West Midlands but a piece of my heart lies in London, I can’t help it when it looks as dreamy as this.

Adam you great ruddy poser – what do you think this is – the Next catalogue?

Must say a huge thanks to Rachel for lending me her “R” for Rock My Wedding, her star design was far superior than anything I could have achieved.

Last but not least I wanted to say thanks to our goody bag suppliers including Ark skincare, Pocket Typewriter as assisted by Adore by Chloe (those calendars were so cute!) and all of the generous discounts and offers Kim managed to bag (literally)

So lovelies, are you doing anything similar for your hen party? a day full of arts and crafts mixed with a generous dose of dress-up? or maybe just a laid-back lunch with your closet friends? Do tell.

Make-up – Mariam Jensen

Bridal Gown Supply – Mamfii Bridal

Retro Week.

January 30th, 2012

Welcome to Retro Week on Rock My Wedding. It’s time to spill a few of the beans that we’ve prepared for you lovely lot, so let’s start by defining what retro actually means…

Honestly, that’s what it actually says in the dictionary.

We have worked with some pretty cool people this week, some of the best in the industry. We have even teamed up with massive retro photography giants lomography.com.

As well as having a huge online community with over 3 million members they also make and sell analogue cameras – they are new cameras, that shoot film, based on iconic designs from the 50s and 60s. RETRO-TASTIC. Lomography have kindly given us a whole hoard of their books and camera’s to give away to you lucky bunch EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. THIS. WEEK.

All you have to do is leave a comment on one of our posts this week (including this one) to stand a chance of winning either a Lomography film camera or Lomography London notebook. A winner will be picked from every post, so make sure you get commenting folks.

Rock My Love.

Rock My Wedding is also spreading a little love over at lomography.com. Three lucky couples will win a photoshoot styled by RMW and shot by some of our favourite photographers, who will all be using lomography cameras and equipment. All you have to do to enter is submit your best Lomographic shots that reflect the phrase ‘Rock My Love’ so if you are already down with the super cool lomography movement then head over to the Rock My Wedding Lomography Rumble after 1pm today (the link won’t work before then) for more details on how to enter.

Lomography Style.

The wonderfully colourful and dream-like iconic square shots that you produce with a Lomography camera are becoming so popular and desirable now that some wedding photographers have started carrying them around in their standard kit bags. I’ve not yet seen a wedding entirely shot on these retro creations yet, but it is becoming increasingly popular to have a few lomographic shots thrown into the mix.

Below is a selection of images from Joanna Brown. She shoots on digital and takes a selection of images with her Diana F+. First of all then 4 images from 4 weddings, shot digitally.

And now, the same 4 weddings, but this time the 4 images are shot on a Diana F+ Lomography film camera.

Now you can’t get much more retro than that! I love the soft focus, the red light bleed and colour cast. With Lomography you never quite know what you are going to get until you get that film developed. I love the element of surprise. I think the balloons image is my personal favourite – the effect of the film, colour and focus combined with the balloons themselves give the image a perfect 70′s retro feel.

And there we have it, an introduction to Retro Week on Rock My Wedding and a good dose of wedding pretty thrown in for good measure!

If you are feeling the lomography wedding love you can view a few more wedding related images over on lomography.com by clicking here. These were competition winners of a previous Lomography Rumble… so you can check out the standards before entering the Rock My Wedding Lomography Rumble too!

Pop back for another retro dose of W-day candy this afternoon.

Adam.
