DIY Devotee… A Christmas Special!!!!

December 5th, 2010

So, while you lovely ladies were giving us your Saturday Survey Feedback a couple of weekends ago, I was spending a (slightly prematurely) Christmassy morning with Becky Hay from Blossom. All in the name of improving DIY Devotee for you all, Becky made some fabulous arrangements, starting off with a DIY table center for a Christmas Rustic Wedding. Of course, the best bit is that these translate beautifully to your Christmas Table and we’ll be showing you exactly how-to!

In the interests of making the whole thing even simpler, I also made a short video for you all, so please let us know what you think… (it’s even got Christmas music!)

So lets get started!

What you need

Empty jam jars – any sizes work
Double sided tape
Sections of tartan fabric (or your chosen material or even brown paper style wrapping paper would work)
Ribbon
Dried orange slices
Cinnamon sticks
Floristry scissors
Ribbon scissors
Pinking shears
Florist wires
Small pine cones

Selection of wintry foliage (we used: blue spruce, berried ivy, rosemary, holly, red skimmia, eucalyptus, kochia (the silvery grey foliage), Ilex berry (the hybridised holly which is grown just for berries). Absolutely any foliage you can raid from any garden will work.

Red Anemones
Luxor Roses
Black Baccara roses
Again, any flowers would work with this and you only need a few heads per small vase.

The How-To

1. Place a line of double sided tape around the jam jar.
2. Cover the jar with the tartan fabric, making sure it’s stuck to the tape.
3. Tie the ribbon around the fabric for added security and use the orange slice and cinnamon stick for added decoration.
4. Fill the jar with water.

5. Fill the jar with a mixture of foliage. Make sure you remove all foliage from the base of each stem so that the water remains ‘leaf’ free and clean.
6. Add the berries next so that they don’t get lost amongst the foliage and are clearly visible.
7. Place the flowers through the arrangement, again, taking care to remove any leaves that will fall below the water level.

8. Loop a wire around the base of each cone and twist tightly so that the cone can be easily inserted amongst the foliage and flowers..
9. Arrange the jars in a line up the centre of your table, along a mantelpiece, or in a group in the centre of a round table and scatter the surrounding surface with cones.

Decorating your Christmas table

We thought we would take this a little bit further than we have in the past and look at the whole Christmas table – all the ideas here work well for a winter wedding or for your own home and entertaining come Christmas.

It’s the oldest trick in the book but luxe = lots. Whatever you decide to do to decorate (again, this works in weddings and at home) grouping items that are the same/similar or work together gives a luxurious, plentiful feel. For that reason, don’t scrimp on the candles, tea light holders or in this case, pine cones! Layer up your china, table cloths/runners and pile the plates high with festive cheer.

I completely fell in love with the little clove studded and ribbon-wrapped oranges Becky brought with her, reminding me of Cristingle at primary school. Familiar to you or not, these are easily made, days ahead, and make a gorgeous table setting or scattered around your home, fruit bowl, mantelpieces etc for extra home-made charm, not to mention cute place names.

A few DIY notes!

The full DIY how-to for the jars the flowers are in, is on the video (see below).

The Orange slices used here for the jars can be purchased in craft shops relatively cheaply, however they are just as easy to DIY at home. Slice your oranges into half centimeter slices, dry and place on a baking sheet in the oven at a low temperature (around 100 degrees,) to dry them out – this can take several hours. Allow to cool, and as well as looking great in this DIY they have loads of other uses including decorations for your tree, extra decoration on your gifts or I like to hang them from light fittings and under picture frames.

All the extra decor items are my own, and built up over the years, the Feather wreath is Parlane, the tea lights (ceramic) from Cox and Cox and (the red flat ones) from Ikea. Both the table runner and the napkins are John Lewis.

To make your own Clove studded oranges, simply stud the fruit in 2 lines right the way around it, at right angles to each other. You might wnat to miss out a few where they cross to allow the ribbon to sit better. Next tie the orange up like a parcel, at right angles to the lines of cloves. Tie one knot then under your final bow, insert a stick of cinnamon. Voila!

I really hope this has made you feel extra Christmassy and all fired up to create your own ideas for the festive season, or in fact your winter wedding. Enjoy the video and please come back to view it if you are reading at work! Thank you so much to Becky @Blossom for all her hard work putting this together with me and look out for another winter inspiration table coming soon!

We are always on the look out for extra reader-inspired DIY projects, so if you have a Christmas project you would like to share, or a winter wedding DIY please send them along (rebecca@rockmywedding.co.uk) and we’ll get them up in the coming weeks. (All we need is some text and accompanying images.)

Time for some mulled wine I think!

2011 Trends And A D.I.Y Table Plan!

November 19th, 2010

Well Well Well…. if it isn’t Madam O’Shea taking over the Friday afternoon D.I.Y slot ;-)

Actually that is a small fib. It is in fact Kim Neville, wedding planner lovely lady from the Pink Pumpkin who has kindly supplied us with some of her top tips and trends for 2011 weddings and a cute, simple and cost effective way of creating your own table plan.

Do it yourself paper pretty if you will.

So in preparation for the weekend we’ll leave you with some snippets of gorgeous gowns, delicious decor and a clever way to seat your guests….

Trends 2011

Big, English weddings will be back. Think billowy ball gowns, tiered cakes and lots of glamour!

The trend for vintage weddings will continue into 2011 but there will be a focus on 1950s style grown up glamour. Weddings inspired by films such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s will be a huge hit with ballrooms decked with crystal candlesticks and pearls

Colour is very much back in vogue with strong colour schemes becoming popular again. Starting the day with a light colour palette and enhancing to bolder colours throughout the day with lighting and floral displays is also a great way to transform a venue

Entertainment has become a top priority for many couples who want unusual ways to keep their guests entertained throughout the day. From circus acts and burlesque dancers to food displays and flair artists, the options are endless

Surprising elements for guests are also seeing a rise in popularity. Marquee reveals from day to night are a great way to completely transform the setting and keep the day visually exciting

Food presentation is another visual element that guests love and top caterers are always coming up with new and interesting ways to present food such as ice-cream canapés, dessert bars and miniature cheese towers

Alternative table plan displays and escort cards are still on the rise and there are a number of pretty ways to display these. One of my favourites is the table plan tree as it’s simple to make and looks beautiful all year round

D.I.Y Table Plan Trees

Table plan trees are a lovely way of displaying your table plan and can be made with ease at home. One advantage is that they can be done quite near to the wedding; often stationers require final names and table plans a few weeks before the wedding, but making a plan like this means that you can do it much closer to the time and take into account any late RSVPs or cancellations.

Items needed:

Card

Ribbon

Willow Stems

Urn or vase

Oasis

Flower heads or moss

Instructions:

To make the cards themselves, simply print the table name at the top of your document, with the guest names underneath.

These are usually printed in alphabetical order by surname.

Print your document on a card, with the list on the right hand side of the card like so:

Attach a piece of ribbon, in a loop to the inside of the card, and then fold the card over and stick with double-sided tape or glue, so you end up with a card and ribbon hanger:

To construct the plan itself, place some oasis in the bottom of your urn/vase and insert willow twigs to form the tree base.

Hang your table plan cards from the branches; if they are hung at different heights the effect will be greater.

Fill the base of the urn/ vase with fresh flower heads or moss to hide the oasis.

You can embellish the table plan cards with ribbon, lace, diamantes, buckles; anything that will work with your wedding décor.

For a smaller wedding this would work well using escort cards; each guest would have to find their own card which tells them their table – for larger weddings logistically this is quite complex so it’s best to stick to table names.

Hope this has given you some inspiration lovelies!

With thanks to Kim at The Pink Pumpkin, go visit her website for more ideas and general eye candy.

DIY Devotee

October 22nd, 2010

This week I have been inspired by the generosity of SophieC who won our giveaway with Idyllic Days to win Vintage crockery hire for a hen party for her friend. My thoughts turned to Hen parties of the tea inspired variety and I decided to use a couple of ideas I’ve had stashed for a while.

Romancing the Recipe

This first one is one I actually made for my friend Laura, who was married this July – always a keen baker and lover of tradition I found this Recipe card DIY over on The Wedding Chicks and created it for her Bristol hen party.

To make the home made gift more sentimental I issued each of the hens with one of these to fill in their recipe and pass on to her, kind of like a wifey starter kit ;) . I have to say there was great consternation about what each hen would write, but even those who kept it light hearted provided a really sentimental keepsake – one writing a sandwich recipe they used to share at university and others passing on valued family recipes. I even passed some cards to her mum so her family members could pass on traditional recipes then presented it all in a box.

check out the full DIY Recipe cards how-to on The Wedding Chicks.

Time for Tea

Charlotte found this little Gem and ever such an easy DIY over on Project Wedding. Cost effective for a tea party hen do favour, this would even be perfect for wedding favours using some fancy fruit teas.

Any one with a little bit of computer or crafting expertise could whip up a suitable printable to infuse (get it?!) the day with personality and charm.

Button Beautiful

It’s pretty vague inspiration but I seriously couldn’t help sharing these images that Charlotte sent over to me too. Also from Wedding Chicks the feature is a Bridal Shower inspiration shoot and uses buttons and shabby chic as a theme…

So just because we are good to you, here are some teaser images of the button festooned event and hopefully some chic ideas for you too!

Head over to see the full Shabby Chic Bridal Shower post on Wedding Chicks.

Have you found some inspiration in the DIY corner here today?

PS! It’s something of an exciting weekend… we may just have a themed week coming up on Rock My Wedding. You know how we love a theme and we’ll be unveiling it complete with the usual wicked graphics sometime this weekend, so make sure you stop by and join in the excitement!

DIY Devotee

October 15th, 2010

Spurred on by the success of last weeks DIY Devotee, I wanted to share another yummy idea today which Charlotte spotted over on Something Old, Something New.

These candy coloured cookies make perfect little messages for your guests, whether you choose to embellish them with your name and wedding date, a thank you or welcome message, or even naughty/nice wedding phrases to get guests talking they make perfectly sweet favours. All you need is a bit of creativity and a piping bag!

The message cookie cutter is available from Williams Sonoma for $19.95 and they do ship internationally, you just have to call them to set it up.

Peonies and Pearls

Our other share this week comes from Adelle over at Peonies and Pearls. Adelle was sharing some of the clever DIY’s she did for her own wedding with us and I was particularly taken with this retro cute Just Married Banner.

If you would like Adelle to share the template with you she used to make this cute banner (she also cleverly used it for a a Thank You card prop) there are full how-to details and her email address over on the blog post.

It’s kind of gone out of vogue now, but I love the idea of driving away earlier in the evening to spend a bit more energy than the usual collapsed state with your brand spanking new hubby and this would make a wicked photo op – even just from church to reception or photo location.

So that’s it for this week. Enjoy folks and happy weekend planning :)

Rebecca

DIY Devotee

October 1st, 2010

It’s an early one for DIY Devotee today, as later on I’ll be blogging live at the National Wedding Show at Earls Court, London. If you’ll be attending over the weekend you can get some hot tips on what we rate there and a sneak peek at the fashion show hot picks too. Of course if you’re going today then give me a wave!!! There will be updates all afternoon as I post them so please keep checking back from lunch time regularly – it’s live so I can’t tell you more than that, except wish me luck!

So the nights are starting to draw in and winter weddings are on the cards (don’t worry, we’ll still be sharing HEAPS of pretty summer affairs here on Rock My Wedding,) but we certainly don’t want to be leaving those planning a ‘do’ in the colder months out!

And cold is the key here. There’s absolutely nothing better than a bit of warmth at a winter wedding, whether that be a thoughtfully placed fleecy blanket as a favour for guests, a roaring log fire, the warmth of candle light or in this case, a little bit of warmth to take home.

DIY Hot Chocolate Favours

One of the favours ideas that I love the most are the edibles ones. There’s nothing I love more than seeing delicious treats all wrapped up pretty and piled hight to share with the ones you love and invite to celebrate with you. I’ve been thinking of doing some DIY favours myself for some time, but until I have the time I thought I’d sahre this winter warmer with you all from Oh, Hello Friend.

For the full how-to, make sure you check out the full blog post for last minute hot chocolate.

Of course it’s not a new idea and I have over the years seen several little DIY projects around the interweb but this one stuck out in my mind for todays post too. From a little while back, and a blog thats yet to grace the DIY pages, StyleMePretty doesn’t often have DIY projects, however when they do, you just know they’re going to be awesome and this one was no exception.

There’s a detailed how-to and templates to down load for this Hot Coco and Marshmellows DIY project over on SMP.

Of course, neither of these projects has to be your project, but I hope they give you some inspiration and a taste for whats to come in terms of wicked winter weddings to look forward to.

Hands up for a winter wedding anybody?!

Yours Truly,

Rebecca

DIY Devotee

September 24th, 2010

Today I’m sharing a couple of DIY projects and making a little hommage to my FAVOURITE blog in the whole of history and cyberspace, Design*Sponge.

For those of you who don’t know it (where have you been?) it’s my idea of heaven… design and interiors inspiration, creative fuel for the mind and stunning style. Although interiors based they have a monthly wedding feature and have regular DIY posts which get me pretty excited.

DIY Log Dome Display Jar

This really harks back to the kind of decor thats very cool over on the US wedding blogs and has been for some time. It’s a quirky, rustic, retro look and the reason I wanted to share this is that it is a great example of the kind of thing I fancied emulating in my planning days but felt was impossible to recreate on this side of the pond… not any more ladies!

Get the full, (very simple I might add) DIY how-to over on Design*Sponge. And if that’s the kind of decor that floats your boat, how about these found Terrariums or these amazing Terrarium ornaments.

DIY Tin Can lanterns

We’re on a bit of a rustic theme today with these Tin Can lanterns via MaggieMakes.

If Lanterns are your thing, Design*Sponge also has a super easy Paper lantern DIY (above) also by Karen at MaggieMakes. Some clever person even thought they would make a cute little gift (the one above was taken as a thank you to the hosts of a BBQ party,) but they’d be gorgeous little favours for your guests, especially if they matched some you hand made for the wedding – a perfect reminder :) .

Perfectly tiny floral displays

My last little offering is a little self indulgent as I completely fell in love with this when it was first posted back in April… if somebody would just make these as little center pieces at their wedding, I’d be one very happy blogger.

They’re rustic to say the least and you don’t see many wild violets in these parts, but I think these would look super cute with little purple and yellow violets from your average garden centre or any number of other minature plants. Perfect in spring time and for smaller gatherings. Line the glass with moss too if you don’t want to see any soil and you’ll find that local charity shops and car boots are positively overflowing with these kind of glasses – which get a whole new spin when they’re the receptacle for these beautiful miniature blooms.

I hope these ideas have stretched your imagination a little about the decor options available to you… do let us know if you’ll be attempting any of these for your day or if Design*Sponge is on your daily blog stop list. I can’t stay away!

Yours Truly,

Rebecca
