Pieces of Pretty

Sterling Stunning

March 1st, 2010

I’m quite excited today to be writing about a designer that I researched for my own wedding and have remained a huge fan of, Jo Thorne.

Jo Thorne designs sterling silver Bridal accessories that are more than a little bit chic and unique. What to wear on my head was one of my biggest priorities as I wanted to be appropriately dressed for my formal gown and surroundings and also to stand out at the Bride in head shots… but that was no way you would be catching me in a Jordan-esque tiara. So i set about finding something unique and modern yet timeless… and I found Jo Thorne. Although I eventually fell for something else entirely, I still love her designs.

Here are a few words from the creative director of Jo Thorne
Historically, the hair accessory used to be a symbol of glamour akin to other classic pieces of statement jewellery, but in recent times it’s status has all too often been demoted to either disposable fashion trinket or trashy bridal accessory.

Jo has the goal of reinventing and reviving the sterling silver hair accessory as light, modern statement jewellery for the 21st century, fusing superb craftsmanship with chic contemporary design. Her designs are equally at home on the red carpet as they are at a glamourous wedding or cocktail party – I’d describe them as a hybrid of fine and fashion jewellery.

Tiara-rama

Thought the Tiara was dead? Well, you’re wrong. Tastes are a-changing but there will always be a place for a stylish and understated tiara for the elegant Bride. Keep it modern and you won’t go far wrong…

Hair Beauties

Not fancing a tiara but want something stunning to decorate your do? Jo Thorne has stunning hair slides, and lots of pretty pins to finish your style with panache.

Pieces of finishing touch Pretty

Looking for some pieces of pretty to finish of your look? Look no further…

pearl
I’m loving this chunky touchable pearl necklace – a great alternative to a traditional string of earls and perfect for putting some personality into your outfit if you’re no a traditional kind of girl :) Also shown is the pearl broach, perfect for adorning your gown if it is lacking in detail, or how about a gorgeous MOB gift?

dragonfly

Need something light and pretty? I was seriously tempted by the Dragonfly Tiara for my W-day but these beautiful pieces from the same range could be perfect for a summer garden wedding, light and airy with an art deco feel.

Don’t forget, Jo Thorne are having a studio event on 6th of March, in association with Emmy Shoes and Sev Hubert of the Hepburn Collection, where you can view the collection and bag a 15% discount!!

It All Looks Rosy

February 15th, 2010

And if it doesn’t your feet certainly will.

Our first find from Rock My Wedding’s little trip to the DWS is courtesy of the delicious shoe candy by Freya Rose. They have a new collection of elegant, pretty and often completely unique designs that will make your dancing toes look like perfection on W-day.

Admittedly they are more high end in terms of price but the hand made workmanship and potential to wear them for every anniversary, as well as the Big Day itself certainly make Freya Rose a wise investment.

Elegant Ivory

From left the Della and the Della Blossom. Strappy peep-toe cuteness courtesy of the Aide.

A Little Bit Fancy

Freya-Shoe-3

Go soft grey and suede with Passion, add some vintage lace appeal with Odearta and make the boys wink with Delta Blossom in pink.

The Perfect Bag

Freya-bag

I hardly ever see a really lovely bridal bag so this little satin clutch number came as a pleasant surprise. Carry plain for understated simplicity or add a beaded or crystal encrusted rose corsage for a feminine twist. Freya Rose gives you the option to really go to town with your own individual customisation.

Happy Shopping folks

The First Night of the Rest of your Life

February 8th, 2010

It’s the first night of your married life. You get home, take off The Dress and what lies beneath? Some M&S support underwear?!

I’m saying this for 2 reasons. Brides nowadays seems to have forgone the ‘wedding night’ underwear for ever more revealing and unusually cut dresses that make underwear either difficult or impractical. Or, a figure hugging, thigh skimming number may call for something all together more smoothing and supporting. But all of that is something for another day, another post. Today, It’s the first day of Get Sexy week and whether you’re looking for something gorgeous for your wedding night or something hot for your honeymoon, we’ve got something for you.

(Or maybe you just want something downright naughty for the coming weekend, read on my friends ;) )

Now, not all of these are white, personally, I’m not a fan of white underwear and saw no reason to choose it for my wedding night when it was chosen solely for the evening and never worn under my dress. (Instead, I went along the same lines as my wedding shoes, choosing a pink with white lace overlay ensemble.)

All about Nude

Myla London make what I consider to be some of the sexiest underwear around. Although I find anything pale edged in black (huge white T’shirt issues…) hugely impractical it’s also immensely sexy for those occasions when you don’t plan on ever putting anything on top…

myla1

On the left we have Hortensia, a laced up name for an anything but prudish simple nude padded plunge sexed up with black lace edging. And on the right… Frieda. Hot hot hot. There’s just something about the itsy bitsy briefs and strategically placed bows implying a present waiting to be opened…

Cunning Corsetry

Also from Myla, the Ella Corset (below left) would be perfect for the more athletic girl wanting to create curves in all the right places with these clever frills. Sadly only in black, wear Ella with the deep Ella knicker for a vintage vibe.

corset

The most iconic corset I hear you ask? Why, by Agent Provocateur, who else? Shown above right, this classic but sexy-as-hell piece is something no lingerie repertoire should be without. Not called the classic corset for nothing, this will be a corset to wear for years to come, and although shown here in black, is usually done in ivory or white come summer and the wedding season onslaught.

Agent of Romance

For those of you looking for something a little more bridal, how about the aptly named Love range, also by Agent Provocateur. With the collection containing the ever elusive attractive strapless bra and a deliciously sexy basque, it should have something to suit every brides taste…. even if that should run to a demi-cup bra.

Vintage Va Va Voom

Looking to go a bit vintage, a bit retro, and more than a little va va voom?! What Katy Did stocks faux vintage lingere of every description. If the circa 1940’s desperate housewife look is for you, then this is where to find it.

whatkatydid

Best of all you can also find a good range of fully fashioned stockings, including the oh so sexy seamed variety in both hold ups and full on suspender garb.

Budget Beauties

Don’t feel like spending the earth on some briefer than brief accessories for the big day or night? How about Elle MacPherson Intimates and this blush toned Dentelle Contour lace set? Or bin the bridal look and keep your cool in this modern striped number.

So have we shown you anything you like? ;)

Where are you going to be purchasing your wedding night or honeymoon underwear – share your saucy secrets ladies!

Cheap Thrills…… Jewels

January 6th, 2010

I love jewellery. And I don’t just mean expensive sparklers.

Some of my favourite pieces are actually under twenty quid. In fact I was just telling Madam Contra the other day how I have never in all my life received as much admiration from the male variety as I did for my Tatty Divine guitar plectrum earrings that I was sporting to work a few weeks back.

As a result I naturally I bought her a pair for Christmas ;-)

Wedding budgets as we all know can spiral out of control and obsessing over accessorising can lead to even more unnecessary costs. If you don’t have the time for a D.I.Y option as very expertly demonstrated by Contra herself last week then there are plenty of pieces of High Street pretty that just might tickle your fancy.

Lobe Candy

Jewel-1

Searching for your inner Audrey? then go for a pair of classic pearl drops. Understated elegance at its best.

Melody Earrings £15.00

If you want to incorporate a bit of the traditional something blue then why not do it in an untraditional way? and these gemstone encrusted numbers are pretty darn spectacular.

Tamara Earrings £15.00

Diamonds are a girls best friend whether they are the real thing or just look like they are. And I simply adore these cute dainty hoops.

Carlotta Earrings £12.00

All available on-line from www.coast-stores.com

Neck Candy

Jewel-2

Monochrome theme? then how about this black and white corsage necklace from Topshop just £16.00

It’s classic pearls again with this chic but funky chunky choker from River Island, all yours for a teeny weeny purse pleasing £7.99

And if it’s a vintage inspired affair than look no further than this gold hued rose collar from Miss Selfridge, a bargain at £18.00 for such a detailed piece.

Having issues finding the perfect W-day bling?

Then drop us an email detailing what it is you are looking for. We’ll do our very best to find it for you.

Get Waisted

December 18th, 2009

It has come to my attention that the waist is back.

A Fashion fancy for a few seasons now the waist detail is making a comeback into bridal. Once thought to be an unflattering addition to your outfit, then unfashionable, currents trends are combining with your hard work at whittling that waistline, to enhance your most feminine of features.

Now whilst many a bridal line is catching on to the trend there remains those who are still not so fashion savvy or that elusive dream dress… perfect neckline, touchable material, made for you, but still something missing… a little personality perhaps?

So how about adding your own belt? Natalie did it for her Parisian Chic Wedding and so I made it my mission to hunt down somewhere for you to get a chic and unique waist adornment without breaking the bank. After all it makes a lovely addition for the evening to glam up your gown… all belts by Dreamcatcher Studio over on Etsy.

Deco designs

etsy3
Although all these belts are vintage inspired I’m loving the nod to the deco period from these sparkling designs.

Corsage Couture

Etsy1
Heavily embellished jewels wrapped in net are bang up to the minute right now as is this oversized corsage inspired sash.

Colour me Beautiful

etsy2
Ditch the ivory and make a statement in black for a monochrome theme and great transition from day to night. Or keep it pretty in pink.

All the belts shown above are hand made by Dreamcatcher Studio found on Etsy. With a little imagination they could make your dress a dream. Dreamcatcher Studio also make a range of bridal headpieces which might just catch your eye…

Head on over to spy a piece of sparkling splendor to decorate your waist with come Wedding day and let us know if you are customising your dress or daring to be different in some way…

Yours Truly,

Contra
