Claire & John

Firstly we have to talk about the seriously epic ‘Marilyn Monroe’ moments our Brides Lyn Ashworth tea length dress has created. The amazing swooshing action has made for some fabulous urban portraits in front of London Bridge, not to mention perfect twirling action at the first dance.

Claire & John chose to hold their relaxed reception at the Roast in Borough Market which has the most fabulous industrial lighting and is surrounded by stunning views of the city. Their love of food lead them to opt for a cheese tower wedding cake, decorated with figs and grapes and almost looks too good to eat…almost!

With cheeky nods of pink accessories and flowers, you’re going to love this quirky urban city wedding.

Dress

Claire The Bride: The most important thing for me was that I had a dress that I could party in on the dance floor. That immediately ruled out anything long and too fitted but the tricky part was finding a short dress that was fun but special enough for my wedding day. The team at The Dress were absolutely brilliant – they welcomed my Dad, ‘Gok Allan’, along for the ride, understood straight away what I wanted and just focused on finding it. I tried on the long version of Lyn Ashworth’s Darcey dress and another of her designs with a tea-length skirt and trusted The Dress ladies when they said the combination would work. They were absolutely right! One thing I hadn’t reckoned with was the wind and dress combo but the ‘Marilyn’ moments on London Bridge gave us a laugh and provided some of our favourite photos of the day. As for accessories, John actually found my shoes – just as I was about ready to give up on the idea of bright pink ones after fruitless searches around London. My pearl earrings and vintage bracelet were the ones my Aunt wore on her wedding day 30 years ago when I was her Bridesmaid.

The Grooms Fashion

John The Groom: A wedding present from my Mum and by far the nicest suit I’ve ever owned. We picked it out browsing the menswear section at Selfridge’s, I loved the feel of the material and the suit cut.

The Venue

Claire The Bride: We just loved the circular room at Islington Town Hall; it meant that the ceremony felt very intimate as we could see every single one of our guests. As for the reception, we knew we wanted somewhere in London that wasn’t a bespoke wedding venue, a place that could cater for our foodie tendencies and somewhere that wouldn’t kick us out at midnight. Roast was the perfect choice. The giant glass windows offered a great backdrop of Borough Market, St Paul’s and the Shard, which was all the décor we wanted. The food was out of this world, the staff were brilliant and, most importantly, we were able to party until 2.30am!

Ceremony

Some talented friends made our ceremony incredibly special. For the music we were lucky to be able to call on our composer friend, Ben, who transformed our somewhat odd choices, including ‘Tomorrow’ from Annie, into music that sounded like it belonged at a wedding. The front of our order of service was a map of London hand-drawn by another friend, Daisy, which was then turned into a seating plan for the reception by my cousin Holly.

Entertainment

We’d bopped our hearts out to Benny Lee and the Whistlestop 5 at a friend’s wedding last summer and so our choice of band was a no-brainer. The dancefloor was packed the entire night, as the band belted out swing versions of everything from Amy Winehouse to the Jungle Book.

Food

What we loved about Roast was that we were not saddled with generic wedding options and could customise our own seasonal menu for our guests. The tasting session with head chef Marcus Verberne was a fantastic day in its own right and he was very accommodating when we wanted to tweak dishes. It was important to us to be able to offer our guests a choice of options and narrowing it down to three per course was probably one of the trickiest parts of planning the wedding. For our cake, we sourced the cheese from Neal’s Yard and Marcus then transformed it into a wedding centrepiece. That and the bacon sandwiches proved very popular about 1am!

Photographer

Gen captured the fun and laughter of our wedding day so perfectly. Neither us like having our photo taken and we didn’t want to waste partying time by having official group portraits, but Gen managed to sneak shots of us and all our guests without anybody knowing. The photos are beautifully composed, natural and show us being us, not awkward wedding model versions of ourselves. Even John’s dad, not known for his artistic sensibilities, couldn’t stop gushing about them.
