Hello everyone and welcome to my first DIY post!
Hanging hearts are a really cute addition to any wedding day decor and they are also lovely to have about the house…
We have more than a few dotted about, they are so easy to make and can be very versatile. Read on to find out how to make them yourself folks!

You will need:
- Material of your choice
- A pen
- A pair of sharp scissors
- Needle and cotton / sewing machine
- Some wadding
- Some ribbon that goes with the material
Step 1:
Fold the material in two so the pattern/print is on the inside and draw a heart shape. You can download our heart shape here.
Step 2:
Cut out the shape leaving a small space (about 5mm) around the shape lines.
Step 3:
Stitch along the line of your shape leaving a small gap for stuffing.
Step 4:
Turn inside out and stuff with wadding.
Step 5:
Stitch up the remaining gap.
Step 6:
Cut the ribbon to size (however long you want it to hang) and stitch it into the top of the heart.
Step 7:
Hang!!
You can be really creative with these, why not make tiny ones to go around napkins / knives and forks or larger ones and pin them to the backs of chairs, you could also make them for favours/place settings by stitching names onto them….
The same process can also be applied to different shapes like stars, birds or letters – the possibilities are endless!!

I love this! We’re hiring a pub for our reception and have a lovely beer garden to decorate. I was thinking about wooden hearts, but this looks much nicer and I could fill them with dried lavender or something! Love all the templates too! Can’t draw shapes to save my life!!! Thank you RMW and nice work Vix, can’t wait for the next one!
Fab DIY post, love it! Thanks for the shapes – going to make some stars for Christmas!

Ooh, think I will do a couple of each for our nursery
)
Love these and would look great combined with our wooden hearts. Another thing for the mental scrapbook and a possible addition to our bridal goody bag.

Ooooh I love your engagement ring!…. and the hanging hearts to of course!
Love the shot of you wearing them as earrings!!!
Great first DIY post bring on lots and lots more please!
I have made quite a few of these before for a crafty fair, that kinda got snowed out! Any how I did mine of the sewing machine and I would defiantly do it your way!!!! I found it almost impossible to sew a heart shape on the machine!
Oh and a love the idea of large ones for the backs of chairs!!!
This post rocks!! I am loving the shape templates and am sooo making some stars. And Vix your engagement ring is amazeballs
Happy weekend eveyone xx
I make loads of these for little Christmas tree decorations, and a really handy tip is to sew the ribbon onto the heart at Step 3.
As I’m a really messy hand-sewer, that means all my sins are safely hidden inside the heart when it is turned the right way out!
Love it! And yes lovely ring too! That is some big bling right there!
I am so going to try these this weekend as I have been wondering what to do while Mr M is at work! Echo stuffing them with nice smelling stuff too! Just need to get some material….anybody have any suggestions from shops rather than online?
xx
@Alex84 Cath Kitson has some fab fabric, hopefully they have one with stars on it for me to make my stars with
x
@Alex84 – try John Lewis, I love the material selection there, when we couldn’t find the right curtains/cushions I went to JL and had them made.

Yes, gorgeous engagement ring! And nice hearts…!
First of all, Vix that engagement ring is a stunner!
We made hearts exactly like these for our wedding! Great minds! ‘Cept ours were made from felt in rainbow colours so slightly less classy looking than yours Vix! We had small ones round the napkins, two giant ones for the top table, and loads of different sizes hung all around the venue.
I have material left over so xmas decorations is a good idea!
xXx
Hiya – yippee, glad you like them and the ring too, I keep staring at it, Im staring it right now as Im typing!! Talco (Malc) did a great job – I love it – not as much as him though!
(want me to pass you the bucket??)
A great place to get material is Hobby Craft, they do batches like the one in the photo, you get a selection of squares in different prints. Also have a look in your wardrobe for old clothes that you dont wear anymore and do some re-cycling sewing styleeee.
I might try some letters too. Is there anything that anyone needs that I can have a think about tackling in the future??
Vix
PS HAPPY FRIDAY – been a long one for me!!

Well done on an awesome first DIY post Vix – cracking!
Shall defo be making some to wear as earrings!
They’re so pretty, and you make it look so easy peasy! Quite like the idea of filling them with rosemary, as it’s good luck at weddings AND it smells lush!

I so could have done with this template – I made over 100 lavender hearts to give a favours and they were a bit wonky! Woops!
Loving the DIY posts. xx
Cuteness! I love homemade decorations and I am an absolute sucker for all things heart shaped lately *rolls eyes* I am so gonna make me some of these. x
Also….for material, look at the bargain racks in TK Maxx for discounted stuff that you can cut up
Oh mr and mrs letters would be amazing!!! Id buy them off you
i really want to have a go as am stuck in bed ill. H2b doesn’t seem keen to but me fabric so old clothes it may have to be…and cotton wool to stuff? Would that work?
What a gorgeous idea that I am SO borrowing! I am going to make loads in red so I can use them on the christmas tree and then at our wedding. I love the idea of making bigger ones to go on the back of chairs, what a simple way to create a fantastic look x x x
I LOVE DIY! I’m a bit of a DIY geek really! And this post was brilliant! Love the idea of putting some smellies in there too, we’re having a diy country barn wedding so these would fit right in!
I also may steal the idea of putting some on the backs of the chairs (great idea Kitten!)
I’m very much looking forward to some more RMW DIY posts.
Thanks Vix, and the ring is gorgeous too!! xx
Amazing!! As I was scrolling down I was thinking, mmm maybe star shapes and then there was the star pdf waiting at the bottom. Will be perfect for our wedding. I’m not a naturally crafty sort, but I have a couple of friends who would love this sort of project. I’m imagining a ‘crafternoon’ -I’ll supply the tea and cake if they supply their sewing skills
This is the cutest post EVER. Especially love them as earrings
VIX!!!! I love this!! I am going to get sewing when we’re settled in HK. I love hanging things. (she says sounding slightly murderous)
Also, cracking ring on your finger… Mr Vix did oh so well xx

I just made a birdie one from the template – just cut up an old floral patterned top! IT REALLY WORKS!!! they are amazeballs. Am feeling a need to make loads in lots of different sizes in different shades of duck egg blue…. x x x
What a great step by step blog post of these fun hearts! Thanks for the time you dedicated to doing this for your readers!
Loved this idea so much! Have spent the past 2 days making brightly coloured animals to hang from a baby mobile
and now am making Christmas decorations for the tree
x
I made these for my wedding back in May (must be ahead of the times!). I was really pleased with how the turned out, and so many of our guests commented on how nice they thought they were, well worth the effort. Check them out on my blog http://invitedtoattend.blogspot.com/2011/07/love-heart-pew-ends.html
Simple and effective, very creative. Gives a beautiful feel to whole thing.
I made a heart shaped one using some leftover fabric scraps but before I shut it closed … I sprinkled in a little handful of potpourri flower medley to make it into a fragrance sachet sorta. It’s so simple to make and can easily keep your dresser drawer fresh or sprinkle in a little baking soda and tuck them into your shoes.
