If you’re looking for an elegant and sophisticated option for a hen weekend, then you really should look at Chapel House in Cornwall. It’s a beautifully restored Georgian town house, with views across St Mounts bay that can be hired exclusively for a weekend of fun and frolics with your best girls.
Chapel House encapsulates all of the ease and luxury of a boutique hotel, but has the warmth and welcoming feel of a home – the entire space is yours to use as you wish. Not only is the house incredible, but you are also based within a stones throw of some incredible things to do – fabulous beaches, amazing spas and lovely restaurants. The perfect hen weekend for grown ups.
There are six double bedrooms at Chapel House and each offers something different – huge sink down baths with sea views, a log burner, a bespoke four poster bed, rain fall showers – but they all have beautifully chosen furniture and a calming colour palette in common. So there’s no arguments over who has the best room – each one is cosy and sensuous, and the perfect place to relax and unwind.
The bathrooms are all ultra sleek and modern with a spa-like finish and filled with goodies from Pure Nuff Stuff (a company based just up the road who create hand made natural skin care products).
Susan, the owner of the house, will help you to organise any activity you have your heart set on. If your best friend is a foodie, think a cookery workshop or demonstration (the kitchen is fully equipped for this with a five ring induction hob, a Gaggenau tepinyaki plate, wok ring and deep fat fryer). Perhaps the Bride loves craft – so a hat making workshop or a flower arranging session would be perfect. Or maybe you just want to explore some of Cornwall’s many beaches, or walk along the coastal path – welly boots and Barbour jackets are provided so you needn’t worry about lugging those heavy items down with you.
If you’re after some eye candy, hire a hot surf instructor and head off to one of Cornwall’s many surf spots for an afternoon of fun. Or just kick back with a book or a movie and relax with your best friends in the house (it really is that lovely you may not want to leave – the ethos of the house is to retain the elegant informality of a fine home, rather than an hotel and so you are encouraged to use the house as you please).
You can get dressed up to the nines and gather for cocktails and games in the drawing room, surrounded by ever changing artwork from The Newlyn School of Art – you really will feel like the ladies of the house. If the weather is nice, you can spill out onto the pretty terrace and garden and watch the sunset as the ships come in.
As the evening becomes more raucous (it is a hen party after all), I’m sure the party will slowly progress to the kitchen, where all good parties end up. This kitchen is the actualisation of the phrase ‘the heart of the home’ – it’s so warm and welcoming (painted in a shade of blue based on Farrow & Ball ‘Stiffkey’ for all of you interior lovers) with a flag stone floor, a big kitchen island, a huge well-stocked American style fridge to chill your Prosecco, you can sit and dine around the big table, then push the tables back, turn up the music and dance in front of the fire. Or head off into town to party – everyone knows the best nights out happen in the most unexpected places – and Penzance is definitely one of those 😉 Plus there’s a very cute bar, The Cornish Barn, just seconds from the house, with a gorgeous outside drinking area lit up with festoon lights.
And as all good girls nights end, finish off by eating snacks in your PJs at the kitchen island with a big mug of tea and a gossip.
The following morning after a blissful nights sleep in a seriously comfortable bed, snuggled up under luxe linens, head downstairs to a hearty Cornish breakfast. The world really is your oyster with breakfast here. Local meats, fresh farm eggs, smoked salmon, avocado, seasonal fruit salads, freshly baked breads and pastries are all available. And of course fresh coffee, proper loose leaf tea, and lots of laughs as you reminisce about the night before…
Gone are the days when getting to Cornwall was a day-long mission – you can fly to Newquay Airport from Gatwick or get the train straight to Penzance. I’ve always wanted to get the sleeper train from London to Cornwall, it’s such a romantic and exciting notion that harks back to bygone days, and what a fun way to start your hen weekend. I love the thought of a glamorous group of girlies, boarding the train with their suitcases ready for a weekend of fun.
RMW were guests of Chapel House, but I will absolutely be returning and would definitely recommend it to friends and family – we had a fabulous time, the house is stunning, the food is delicious and Susan has created the luxury and convenience of boutique hotel, with the warm welcome of a family home. Every single detail has been thought of – from the immaculately appointed bathrooms, to the iPads provided in each room, from the umbrellas in the hallway to the local blooms that fill each window ledge…every detail has been thought of. So much so that you won’t need to ask for anything. And if you do, chances are you just haven’t noticed it…
Prices start from £1000 per night for exclusive hire, which includes breakfast.
The term ‘hen party’ doesn’t really do justice to the luxury mini break you could have with your best girls at Chapel House. Please do have a look at it and if anyone decides to head to Cornwall for their hen weekend, let me know and I can recommend lots more things for you to do.
P.S. Chapel House would also make a truly romantic mini-moon for you and your new husband, or you can hire the house for an intimate wedding reception. That’s the beauty of this flexible space – Susan and Lucia will work with you to create a holiday or event that is totally bespoke to you.
