Petra & Petr

Somewhere between a small wedding and an elopement, Petra & Petr’s intimate wedding day in London is like a refreshing ray of sunshine for a Sunday afternoon. Stripped back of any fuss and frills, the couple (who married on their 20 year anniversary) held their ceremony at Islington Town Hall, followed by adventures and lots of food and drink, at their favourite haunts across London.

The photography from Steven Rooney captures the essence of their wedding day to perfection – simple, honest and minimal, but full of love and laughter. The whole thing has that quiet, understated confidence of a couple who deeply love and trust each other and it’s a pleasure to share something a little different with you lovely lot.

The Bride

Petra The Bride:
I didn’t want to have a long, classic bride dress but still wanted to have some of it’s features. I found one which had the combination of white colour & lace but it was different as it was short and I really liked it. I found the dress at Reiss.

We went shoe shopping with my bridesmaid Katka. She loves shoes!! We had a picture in our minds and it was quite difficult to find something similar. We aimed for a gold colour. I can’t walk in too high heels! At the end, we both liked the sandal shoes from Dune. We also agreed to get second pair of just walking shoes because of lots of walking. These were with smaller heels and more comfortable (from Debut at Debenhams). I also got myself a second dress which I was planning to wear in the evening for our dinner. I really liked 30s style dresses and the one from Miss Selfridge was great. Both day & evening coats were from Debut.

The Groom

Petr The Bride: I always wanted to wear something laid back, not too posh nor too elegant, vintage and chequered and of course not too expensive hehe. I am not really ‘a suit guy’ knowing I would wear it very rarely. I found it quite a challenge to find one which would fit all the criteria. But, here we go, after a long search I found one, which looked great, exactly how I imagined it and for decent price, from Marc Darcy London.

The Rings

When it came to our wedding rings, we wished to have something little bit different. None of us were ever into gold and traditional rings. While I was searching for my perfect engagement ring, I found an amazing artist Jonathan from California who makes the most incredible custom made rings made of crushed stones, all sorts of different woods and silver or gold. This time, we chose the ring made of ebony wood with two crushed malachite inlays, crushed black jasper inlay with silver centered inlay and we loved them.

The Beauty

I was browsing websites and reading lots of reviews when choosing my make up artist. I knew what I wanted. I don’t wear much make up and wanted to have a natural look. I also had 2 favourite hair styles I wanted to try. At the end, I chose Justina Sullivan, whose work I really liked. I had a trial around 4 weeks prior to the wedding and it went really well. Justina is really nice, friendly and I felt very relaxed with her. My make up looked very natural and she took pictures of both hairstyles and I then decided to go with the loose hairstyle. Justina also did my bridesmaid’s hair.

The Flowers

When I was shopping in Selfridges Food hall I was passing Philippa Craddock Flowers and really like the cottage look of most the flowers. I checked their website and constantly fell in love with their Farleigh’ bouquet. The combination & colours was exactly what I was looking for. I also asked them to make me one tiny bouquet for my lovely flower girl & a buttonhole to match for my husband to be.

The Food

My lovely wife Petra and I are both food lovers and it does not really matter whether it is a Michelin star restaurant or ‘mammy’ type of cooking in a local cafe. We wanted to have something from both worlds. Then, we came with an idea…why not have lots of ice cream in Udderlicious?!?, one of the best home made ice cream shops in London, then pop for a couple of drinks at King’s Head theatre pub before filling our empty stomachs with home made crepes in Camden Town market stalls, yum. Of course, what would a wedding be without a proper ‘posh-like’ sit down meal at the Shard’s Ting restaurant staring at pretty much the whole of London from 35th floor and eating 6 course meal talking about our wedding?

Instead of traditional wedding cake, we decided to have our Czech traditional miniature wedding cakes (about 50 tiny ones) filled with home made plums, marmalade and sweet curd mixed with raisins.

The Venue

We wanted to have our special day in the city we both love – London. Therefore the wedding ceremony had to be in a central London location. We picked up the Old Marylebone Town Hall but it is closed for a refurbishment till 2017 so Islington Town Hall was our second pick. It’s a great location. Located on the chic highstreet, within a close distance to Camden Town and central London. We both liked the Mayors Parlour which was perfect size for our small, intimate wedding with very interesting features all over the room. We were really happy they could offer as a date & hour we wanted as this was very important to us. Our big day was also a celebration of our 20 beautiful years together.

The Photographer

Choosing the right photographer was definitely the most important task of our wedding planning (well, that was really the only major planning we did ;-)). Not only did the photographer have to be the one possessing a great eye for details, unusual angles and quirkiness, but also to be a nice and pleasant person who we felt comfortable and relaxed with on the day, someone like your best mate who you click straight away and talk for hours. I spent ages searching on the net going through so many different artists but somehow could not find the right one at all. I think, as an enthusiastic photographer myself, I just found myself too picky as I constantly kept reminding myself that this is the only opportunity we have as we are going to spend the rest of our lives looking at those precious moments printed on the photographic paper…obviously there was no pressure, hehe.

Then, out of the blue, I found Steve Rooney and his website. Looking at his photos, we knew that this was it. Petra and I were so amazed by little details and such strong emotions he captured in his photos. Steve absolutely exceeded our expectations on every level. He fitted my above description and his professionalism and relaxed attitude just shined through on the day, as I said like meeting an old friend. And the photos, I don’t think they need much of commentary…we loved them, we cried, we laughed, then we cried again 😉
