Rebecca & Alan

You know the saying ‘less is more’, well this is certainly the case for Rebecca & Alan’s big (small) day and it’s heavenly! They chose to have an intimate register office ceremony with two of their dearest friends as witnesses and then a beautiful weekend long retreat with just 10 family members.

Just because their day was low key doesn’t mean they scrimped on all the pretty, oh no! Rebecca’s lace backless dress is simply divine & she looks the picture of elegance wearing it and then there’s the gorgeous dessert table with 3 show stopping wedding cakes! WOW!

We love seeing & hearing everybody’s ideal day and todays humble wedding in all it’s simplicity & beauty is no exception.

The Outfit

Rebecca The Bride: “It’s All About Me (and my dress)”

Having a small wedding I was going to go all Kiera Knightley and just wear something I already had but then the internal shopper in me said “No, you will buy a new dress” So I did…

Backless, backless, backless. I saw my dress on Pinterest and tracked that baby down to the US. I loved it as I knew it was different to all the dresses I have seen over the years, but still pretty and feminine. I did worry that I might be asking for trouble ordering a dress from overseas. Katie May Bridal were great. They sent over a sample dress, we then Skyped about what changes I would like (2 inches lower at the back for me – scandalous!) and then they sent out my new dress. It took 2 months in total. I wore a trusty pair of Zara shoes that I’ve had for 4 years and I’m not a fan of jewellery so it was just my wedding ring on the day.

In true romantic style….. my Mum and I picked my ring. I saw it in a vintage store in Northampton and bought it. Alan picked his own band too. Alan knows how I feel about these things so just left me to it. He was probably relieved!

I had 2 make up trials with 2 lovely ladies but after each one I just didn’t feel like me, so decided to do my own makeup and bung some rollers in my hair the night before. My poor Mother nearly fainted when I told her this is what I was doing.

We were both adamant we never wanted a wedding, the whole big event thing was not for us, but then 3 years in we both realised it wasn’t marriage we were put off by but weddings in general (don’t get us wrong we love, love, love other peoples weddings!) so we decided to get married, but do it our way. I didn’t want an engagement ring or an engagement party so we just told friends and family and then got on with the planning. It was about 8 months from our decision to the actual big (small) day. I did come to realise though that no matter how small the wedding is it still requires a lot of planning and for someone who wasn’t wedding mad I spent a whole lot of time looking at other weddings on blogs and on the web.

I loved the elegance and simplicity of Kate Moss’s wedding, and wanted to keep ours as simple as possible but I still wanted colour and fun in the day, so that’s why we went with a county style cake table setting. I also have a family antique chaise lounge and chair that I love and so we took those along for the photographs. I liked the idea of some photos being seated and adding different height dimensions to the photos. I like to think mine & Alan’s laid back attitude was the main influence of our day.

The Groom

Despite it being a small day Alan still wanted to look as sharp as possible and we are both a big fan of clothes and shopping. I think it took Alan longer to find a suit than it did me a dress! He found the perfect dark navy DKNY suit in Moss Bros. and looked incredible on the day.

The Venue & Decor

It was just us two (and two witnesses who are close friends, Alex and Rory Dunn) at Towcester Registry Office for the ceremony and then 10 family members for the whole weekend at Beggars Barn in Shutford, Banbury for our reception. We booked the barn through Eventful Stays.

We used to live in Towcester and knew their registry office had very pretty outdoor space for photos and we chose Beggars Barn as it was not too far for the family to travel and but still grand enough to make it feel like a special weekend away for everyone. My niece kept telling everyone she was joining us on our honeymoon!

I didn’t want to decorate too much but I did buy about the length of the England in white bunting (Not on the High Street), which me and my sister draped everywhere on the Saturday morning. I wanted to keep things as simple as possible but I still wanted colour and fun in the day, so that’s why we went with a county style cake table setting and we incorporated the family antique chaise lounge and chair that I love for added decor and to include in the photographs.

I wasn’t going to have flowers but then came across the Artisan Dried Flower Company when trawling the net. I felt the subtleness of them summed up how I felt about the wedding and they were also something I could keep forever.

Ceremony

We chose the standard vows to say to each other at the registry office. I walked myself down the aisle, no tradition here please. Alan is not a big public speaker and I know how he feels about me and our commitment to each other so we didn’t feel the need to put pressure on each other by making up our own vows. Saying that I was still very tearful through this part of the day, just saying those words that are tying you together forever with your beloved did move me greatly.

No first dance for us either, in fact I think we are still yet to have our first ‘slow dance’. How boring do we sound!! We are fun sometimes, I promise!

Food & Cake

Arrr Jamie at Jamie Bakes is amazing. I found three pictures of cakes I liked on Pinterest (Pinterest is dangerous), I liked all three and couldn’t decide which one between them, so I thought what the hell, it’s my day, lets have all of them. I asked if she could recreate them and bada bing bada boom they appeared. Although I wanted my day to be small I still wanted it to be pretty and fun and I think the cakes summed it up perfectly.

Oh I do love an afternoon tea, so we arranged a small tea to all have when we arrived at our venue from the registry office. Chipping Norton Tea Set came, set up and cleared away, it was the perfect no fuss start to our day.

Dressing Girl

Although I didn’t have an official bridesmaid, if I did my 5 year niece Romy would have been it. Like me she has very set taste and the dress I bought her was not acceptable so she picked her own. Who am I to argue with that! She also did not enjoy the title of ‘Bridesmaid’ so asked us to refer to her as a ‘Dressing Girl’. This role involved helping me get in my dress on the Saturday morning, thanks Romy, couldn’t have done without cha!

Photographer/Therapist

I vainly like to think of myself as being different and Nigel totally understood where I was coming from and the vibe I was going for. Also, with not a lot of guests I thought it might be hard for him to catch as many ‘moments’ as at a larger wedding, but Nige just did his thing and caught all the joy we felt on the day. Poor old Nige had to listen to me banging on a lot about we aren’t ‘photo people‘, ‘it’s not a normal wedding’ etc. and he deserves a medal really for not only taking amazing photos but putting up with me! When our garden time was cut short by the great British weather, Nige invited me Alan and the chaise to continue our portraits when we returned from our honeymoon, how brilliant is that!

  1. So glad you featured this lovely wedding. All your weddings, are fab but even the popular DIY themed day can cost a lot of money. Keep it small if that’s what you want and have a wonderful day.

  2. I love the complete honesty of the bride in writing this, and as a couple their commitment to doing exactly what they wanted. There is often so much tradition and pressure to do this and that. Very refreshing and beautiful. Love, love love the dress x

  3. Hi

The bride here, thanks for featuring our wedding. As a long term stalker of this blog and Rock My Style I was very chuffed. Alan was more concerned with his apparent double chin!

    Thanks again

    Rebecca

    1. Your wedding was truly beautiful Rebecca & you both looked gorgeous & at ease on your day, not a double chin in sight!
Congratulations to you both & thank you for sharing your day with RMW, we loved featuring it x
