Guy Collier is a documentary wedding photographer with a real emphasis on a non-directed photojournalist approach. A member of both the ISPWP (International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers) and WPJA (Wedding Photojournalist Association), both prestigious organisations inferring high standards of photography, recognised by peer review and extensive experience. Guy shoots across the UK and Europe (In fact he is off to Paris for a wedding in July, lucky thing!) Guy is Hampshire based and a Queensberry Albums partner photographer.

I chatted with Guy to find out a little more about him and see what he recommends you look for in a wedding photographer…

What do you like about Wedding Photography particularly?

It sounds corny, but it’s being right in the middle of the most important day of a couple’s life together. Weddings are full of emotion – laughter, tears, joy, sadness – and to be asked to photograph such a huge day is always a massive job. It’s one that I absolutely love though.

How would you describe your photography style?

Documentary/photojournalist. I’m not interested in setting up shots to fake moments. I want to observe, anticipate and photograph. I want to blend in as much as I can, and make sure that what I photograph is natural, unstaged and full of emotion. I use minimal post-processing because I want the photography, not Photoshop, to tell the story.

What is your favourite type of wedding to photograph?

My clients are typically mid-20′s-mid 30′s and keen to have as much fun as they can at their wedding. They want their guests to enjoy the day and to play a part in the day. They’re not about big dresses and bling, they have an eye for the details and for making their wedding unique. The venues can range from barns to the grandest hotels, but one aspect remains constant – fun, interesting people who want their photography to reflect what really happened, not a stylised interpretation.

What do you recommend a couple to consider when booking a wedding photographer?

The 2 key things for me are that you love the photography and are going to get on with the photographer on the day. He or she will be with you for maybe 12 hours and you have to be sure you’ll have fun together. Budget is often a factor, but after the cake has been eaten and the dress put away, the only thing you’ll have left will be the photography. Connect with your photographer and make sure you’re a good fit for each other and you’ll be rewarded with photography that’ll take you back to your wedding day for the rest of your lives.
