I’m pretty excited about this one.. another of our newest sponsors, Julia Ford, is behind Modern Photographic and also happens to be Art Director at WEDDING Magazine – so you can be sure you’re going to get beautiful images by someone who understands the subtleties of wedding photography. Julia has answered a few questions to help you get to know her better and is showing off some beautiful images too – prefect for the Bride who really wants to be captured in a modern, yet timeless way.
What do you like about Wedding photography?
Wedding photography to me is the perfect combination of so many styles, reportage, portraiture, lifestyle and fashion, mixing it all up to create a beautiful result. I shoot weddings across the country, whilst I’m based in Essex/London I’ve been up to Yorkshire and Devon and Im off to Scotland, Wales & Birmingham to shoot weddings next month!
I’m very lucky as my whole life is immersed in the Wedding industry. As well as having my very busy wedding photography business I art direct leading bridal magazine WEDDING. Art directing means I work on high end fashion shoots and with wedding photographers across the world.
Describe your style…
Fashion reportage, mixing the two up to get the best from your day. I love capturing moments as a wedding unfolds, standing back and observing it all to tell a story. However sometimes a little art direction is needed, to make sure you get stunning details and portraits of your day. Being an art director, it won’t take long, but you will love the results. I always do a recce with my couples beforehand so we chat through ideas and if possible an engagement shoot that way you have the chance to see how we work.
Whats your favourite type of wedding to shoot?
A couple who have made their wedding all about them, and if that breaks from tradition then so be it! It’s the little things that make it personal to them, whether that be a wedding in their parent’s garden or unique decorations that they’ve spent hours on. I’ve worked with so many lovely couples over the years its hard to say anything that specific.
I adore Californian and South African weddings because of the light, but the quirkiness of a London wedding is so much fun too!
What tips would you offer couples when booking their photographer?
This is something most photographers say- personality counts. The bride will probably spend a large part of the day with the photographer, so you have to like them and feel comfortable around them. Meet up with them chat about their work and your day. If you can do a recce, everyone is different and even if you have shot at a venue a hundred times you might have your own vision. An engagement shoot gives you a chance to have fun and get to know us better too!
What do you offer couples?
Options… My recommendation would be that couples opt for two photographers to make sure every angle is covered and a bespoke wedding album to show off your photos, coupled with an engagement shoot. However every wedding is different so the choice is yours. Every couple will get a high res CD of their images and a client download gallery meaning friends and relatives can download images to print for nothing too!
Special Offer for Rock My Wedding Readers
Julia would also like to offer the first three couples who contact her 15% off packages on the Modern Photographic website when they mention Rock My Wedding. If you don’t get in that quickly, there’s still 10% off for all others mentioning Rock My Wedding THIS WEEK!
