Becki & Martin

Alice in Wonderland is such a GREAT theme for a wedding. There are just so many fun things you can do with flowers, signs, stationery, cakes…as you’ll see from the styling by Bride Becki in this morning’s wedding at Crewe Hall.

But Becki also chose the theme for more personal reasons, as you’ll see from her report. Sometimes it’s easy to forget about ‘real life’ in the midst of wedding planning and so I love that Becki wanted use the joy of her big day to embrace some of the harder times she has been through.

She makes a really, really beautiful Bride and I’m sure you’ll agree that her and Martin just look insanely happy and loved up. There are also some rather epic feathery Jimmy Choos on display…I have serious shoe envy this morning!

Becki The Bride: We wanted our wedding to reflect our personalities therefore we decided from the off that I, Rebekah would do the planning as I’m a massive control freak. Having suffered with depression and anxiety intermittently, from a young age I have always been able to relate my own troubles and internal turmoil to Lewis Caroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” so it made sense for “Wonderland” to be the underlying tone for the wedding day.

Alice In Wonderland

People may think why would I want to be reminded of my depression and struggles on a day which is widely recognised as being the happiest day of your life? My answer to that is simple – my struggles have been turned into strengths and have shaped me as the person I am today and I am proud of the person I have become.

The Decor

The references to Alice in Wonderland were prominent yet subtle, the fabulous cake made by Martin’s godfather who is in fact a joiner by trade, the real flowers on the tables sprawled over teacups and teapots in a mish mash of flowers and colours. We really wanted the fresh flowers to make an impact with the bridemaids being in grey and the ushers in navy and David read our minds and knew exactly what we wanted and delivered.

We had “eat me” and “drink me” tags, the table names were all characters from the book. The invitations were bunting with Alice and Wonderland illustrations and the table plan was a piece of cardboard in a oversized pictured frame and the font very small so it had to be read through a looking glass. The bridesmaids and flower girls each held an oversized crepe paper rose to give the illusion that they were small and their flower was big in keeping with the theme. Old books were wrapped by my friend Lianne with pages from other books and stacked in the middle of the tables.

We also wanted to incorporate a vintage theme into our day, a Downton meets Wonderland, without many gimmicks and to remain timeless. We knew that this blend to most would seem like it wouldn’t work and that is exactly what we hoped, as we knew that it would.

The Wedding Party

The wedding party attire was to be classical/vintage without being over bearing, again a timeless theme was key. The groom and groomsmen wore a classic navy slim fitted lounge suit with vintage tweed waistcoats, with bow ties issued in pairs.

As Martin wears a suit in his day job, it was important for him to ensure that he stood out from his office attire for our special day, this was achieved with the choice of waistcoats and buttonholes. The buttonholes were bespoke, with Martin’s buttonhole having the same piece of jewelry present in my bouquet.

I knew I wanted grey for my Bridesmaids, as it’s a timeless and simple and after searching the internet the Dessy Leyla Rose dresses were exactly what I’d visualised.

The Dress

I knew that finding the perfect dress was not going to be easy but to find the perfect dress it is important to find the perfect shop and I found that in The White Closet. I knew from the moment I walked in that I would find my perfect dress and Jenny Packham’s Eden was just that. I actually had already purchased my shoes so I had them with me and when I tried them on the dress was the prefect length, it was meant to be. All the jewellery I wore on the day was from my eldest sister Annabel, the exact same jewellery she wore on her own wedding day some tens years earlier. A good omen, or so we like to think!

The Photographer

We wanted to invest in our memories and this meant that we were prepared to push the boat out a little with our choice of photographer and cinematographer. Our search for a photographer was one that we really were expecting to have a tough time with, as we did not wish to have our day taken up by posing for photographs that told very little story. Our luck must have been in as we found Matt Bowen online and from the moment that we met and discussed our vision we clicked and never looked back. The final results were exactly as we expected and we could not have asked for more. We wanted natural images that captured the love, laughter and happiness of us and our guests. Matt delivered.

It was also down to Matt as to how we found our cinematographer, Jeff Wood. When Matt recommended Jeff, we visited his site and expected the ‘usual’ wedding videos…how wrong we were! Jeff has captured our day and turned it into a captivating, imaginative and somewhat surreal piece of work. We have endless superlatives for Jeff, however, his work says enough for itself. These two gents were the guys we trusted to capture our lifelong memories and we cannot thank them enough for their work and their professionalism.

All in all we had a dream, we believed in it, it worked and we will remember this day forever.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make our day the special day that it was.

Thanks RMW for wishing to use our wedding.

    1. Definitely Pinar – your wedding should be about the two of YOU, the good, the bad and the ugly!
