Perfect for a rustic style wedding with gorgeous jewel coloured berries and sprigs of rosemary. Simply place the berries all around the edges and a few on top. Dot in some rosemary or other herbs and you can always add a sprinkling of icing sugar if you like.

Zebra, giraffe and pom poms. Perfect combo if you ask me. These little cuties are from Scleich which you an get at all good toy shops and the fabulous pom pom bunting is from The Wedding of My Dreams.

A pretty sparkly design that took seconds to create. Take a long piece of sequin ribbon (we purchased ours from eBay) and then wind around the cake. Finish with a sparkly topper like this one from The Wedding of My Dreams.

Um, just because we love pineapples! You can substitute for your favourite fruit or statement object. Think about things that are personal to you or that will tie in with your chosen colour scheme.
  • INFO"
These peonies from Bloom Fleuriste are simply wow. Quite possibly the largest, brightest peonies we have seen and little else was needed to create a real statement cake. When using large blooms it is best to wire them and insert them in a posy pick in to the cake to help balance the blooms.

  • INFO"
For this cake we printed a pretty lace design on to tracing paper, cut to size and wrapped around the cake. This is such an effective way of personalising your cake to your style as the possibilities are endless. You can also use edible icing sheets or printed wafer paper if you like. Top with a cute blackboard banner.
  • INFO"
Its no surprise that this was one of the favourites on the day. If you or your man are a lego fan then this is one for you. We purchased a lego bride and groom topper from eBay and placed these on the top. Then to add to the fun we placed a few of our other favourite characters as guests at the wedding. Who doesn’t want a hot dog man at their wedding?!
  • INFO"
This is an extremely pretty topper using a gorgeous vintage tea cup and saucer filled with fresh roses. For your something ‘old’ you could use a family tea set. To complete the look wrap pretty lace around the cake and secure in a bow. You can always add some pretty fresh roses on each tier as well.
  • INFO"
These cute sugar mice make a sweet addition to the cake and are perfect for a tea party or Alice in Wonderland theme.
  • INFO"
This is a truly romantic cake. We separated the tiers using pillars and then filled between each tier with the prettiest rose buds and blooms and finished with some sprigs of rosemary.
  • INFO"
This is just the simplest design ever. Take a bundle of wool in your choice of colours and wrap round and round in the place of ribbon. We finished ours with this fabulous 'Eat Me' cake topper.

  • INFO"
Oh so simple but oh so cute. Take a bag of jelly cherry sweets and place around the edge of each tier. Giant strawberries or cola bottles would also be great. If only so that you can eat the leftovers!
  • INFO"
We do love a polaroid so why not decorate around your cake and table with your favourite snaps. We used a vintage polaroid on the top of our cake but you could choose to just top with an image of the happy couple. Too cute.
  • INFO"
I adore succulents, especially when combined with the bright pops of yellow crespida and soft copper sprayed leaves. You can ask your florist to wire these for you and then insert in a posy pick in to the cake.

  • INFO"
The cutest little peg people sit underneath some 'Just Married'. We bought the peg people from eBay and painted them ourselves so if you are feeling arty you can really make the cake personal to you. Otherwise there are plenty of these peg people on Etsy.

  • INFO"
Honeycomb decorations are great for around your venue but these mini ones from Ikea worked a treat on the cake. Simply pin on to the sides and pile on top.

  1. We’re having a very much homemade wedding so decorating our own cake is definitely on the cards! I’m thinking dark green lace (to match the colour scheme) and sugar freesias, daffodils and tete-a-tetes (to match the flowers in my bouquet.) I’m also seriously in love with the idea of a pair of bride and groom dinosaur cake toppers!

  2. Congrats for your colaboration with Marks & Spencer, all the toppers are georgeous, in my case if I would have to choose a topper for my cake it could be one with the bride and groom shoes in miniature and a bit of confetti over there and the cake.
    Kisses from Spain

  3. I will put burlap and lace around my marks and Spencer’s cake with either a vintage tea cup or a willow tree ornament on top.

  4. Our wedding is a diy affair. The cake is going to be my fellas job. He’s an engineer, so wants to build a crane that will be lifting the top teir inti place/hovering it above the rest of the cake. It’s a chance for him to put his personality onto something. He also wants to use his new laser cutter to design and make a bespoke topper. Winning the cake would be amazing snd give him the time and confidence to concentrate on these decorative features. Xx

  5. I’m English & my fiancé is American, & we have a running joke of buying each other themed rubber ducks, so we want an American duck & an English duck on top of our cake complete with homemade veil & top hat and lots of sparkle too!

  6. oooh, this is difficult! I accidentally picked my hogwarts house colours as my colour scheme so I think it would have to be Hogwarts themed. MAybe each tier a different house with coloured ribbons and sweets to decorate. And slightly bizarrely, topped with a westie because I love my dog.

  7. We are having a very DIY wedding, in a beautiful barn, and our theme is ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. So our cake will feature lots of beautiful flowers, perhaps with a touch of hessian and lace. I’ve been debating making my own cake toppers from fimo and I’d like to include our Chocolate Lab Meg too! Loving these M&S cake ideas – I’m currently planning on making my own cake, but it would be lovely not to have that stress! x

  8. We’re actually planning on buying the above cake to assemble ourselves! I bought Game of Thrones pop figures of Khaleesi (in her wedding dress) and Khal Drogo as cake toppers, as we absolutely love the show! Also planning on jazzing up the rest of it with flowers and ribbon to match our colour scheme. Can’t wait! X

  9. We are having a ‘ water for elephants’ theme vintage circus wedding … But we have a tight budget and are doing lots of diy bits . My fiance is brewing all the beer and wine and im making the lights and decore invites and favours … So i think we would have elephant or carosel horse toppers and strippy ribbon and some mini diy flaggs x

  10. My boyfriend and I are actually thinking of customising an M&S cake for our wedding cake – the plan is to make fondant icing safari animals to place around the sides and then we have Ryu and Chun-Li figurines (from the Street Fighter computer game) to put on top to hopefully make it look a bit like a stage of the computer game. It’s not really part of a theme as such, just something that we both happen to love!

  11. I totally love this idea, I am planning a country themed wedding so I would have lots of berries, plants, lavender, florals, I really want a stag and doe wooden cake topper and after looking at this post I love the idea of sugar mice!

  12. We are having a secret garden wedding so I’d like to have a rustic looking cake, we love frosting, but with a twist, so with a herb table decor theme perhaps a mint cake?! Something that smelt as good as it tasted!!

  13. We love giraffes so we would have a bride and groom giraffe (groom giraffe would have a nice big moustache) – we would also include Lego bricks as we have a thing about those too. Decirations would follow our tastes 🙂

  14. My fiancé and I actually met just before I went off to study for a year in San Francisco- he followed me out there 2 months later and we lived in SF for the first year of our relationship. We have such great memories and have been back loads to visit friends so it seemed fitting to have a little nod towards the City in our wedding. On our last trip we bought a cake topper (which is actually a Christmas tree decoration!) of the Golden Gate Bridge and we plan to use that with blue ribbons round the lower tiers to match the lovely blue California sky! It’s such a lovely ornament and we’ll be able to keep it forever for our Christmas tree 🙂

  15. Our wedding is almost 2 weeks before Christmas so we would have burlap with holly and berries and seasonal greens and 2 pine cone toppers with a top hat, veil and diamond! And perhaps a nice dusting of icing sugar!

  16. What a fabulous post – full of ideas!!
As we are going for a country fete wedding, our cake would be vibrant with pops of colour and full of tasty treats. Love the sugar mice idea, very cute!! We will likely go for a topper of us and our two cheeky pups to top off the lovely cake 🙂

  17. Brilliant, some really fantastic ideas. We have been thinking about getting the cheese tiered cake from M&S and decorating it ourselves but I now really love the idea of getting these cakes and decorating it. We’ve got two little birds to sit on top of our cake (whatever cake we eventually choose) that are actually ring holders! They’d look lovely on top of this M&S cake with some flowers and lace. Thank you, I feel inspired!

  18. I would create a river going from the top of the bottom and add a kayaker on the river. Each layer would be themed on something outoorsy as my fiancé and I are involved in scouts and DofE – I’m thinking some tents and hills!

  19. We are having a very rustic wedding so our cake would be decorated with lavender, sprigs of rosemary and topped with Hessian bunting. An M & S cake would be perfect for the occasion as a great plain back drop and reliably tasty option. It would also be personal to us in a way as I worked for M & S when we met and enjoyed working there for 5 years.

  20. I love the idea of printed sugar paper flowers on the top and cascading down one side of the cake…I’m not very arty so not sure if I’m brave enough to decorate my own cake 🙂

  21. Love all these ideas! We were thinking of going completely DIY for our cake. In terms of toppers would love a glitter “he’s her lobster” as that would be perfect for us! Although fresh flowers are tempting too… x

  22. We’re decorating ours in different coloured ribbon to match the bridesmaid dresses, which are in turn going to be the three main colours from my bouquet! We bought the cake topper last year, nearly a full two years before our date!

  23. I always planned to have the basic 3tiers from m&s with fresh purple and white freesias in-between the tiers, teal ribbon around the tiers, and topped with something Harry Potter related as that is our theme the different ideas have given me lots to think about though. X

  24. Im having a Gatsby in Paris inspired wedding. So this M & S’s tired white chocolate cake would be perfect. I would add a mr and mrs acrylic cake topper (that i got from america) and add glitter dipped feathers and some pearls on 😀

  25. wow! so many fab ideas! We would like a vintage themed farm wedding! both being from farming families it seems only right! so in my head it will have flowers and bunting on but I imagine In Phils head it will be painted to look like a friesian cow and be black and white!

  26. with only booking our wedding this weekend leaving 6 months to the wedding and a new baby finances are tight. We are doing DIY with M&S cakes with a band of blue ribbon and diamontes round each tier and would love toppers of our little family on top. Bride, groom our 8 year old and our 4 month old baby x

  27. We have been planning on getting the plain M&S tiers. I was thinking about decorating with flowers but there are some great ideas here. I am very drawn towards the Scleich animals!

  28. Would love to win this comp my cake would be plain with the simplest diamanté ribbon around the sides and added pink yellow and orange gerbera flowers. We have our initials in diamanté too for the topper. Simple and elegant! Nice homemade touches

  29. Great post full of inspiration, great to think a bit more out of the box too. I’d love to make my own cake toppers. Me and my fiance are obsessed with snowboarding and thats how we met, so I’d make little figures who are ready to hit the slopes for the top tier and decorate the rest with little trees to create a snowy mountain scene!

  30. Fab post with loads of ideas. I’m. Hoping to make my own New York themed wedding cake using an m&s cake. Plan to use icing to cut out the new York skyline and wrap it around a layer of the cake. Also going to make fondant yellow cabs and the post has just given me the idea to make peg versions of my partner and I – I might try to create a central park scene at the top as that is where we got engaged x

  31. What a great post with some really fun ideas! I like the idea of getting a simple cake that you can decorate in your own way. Thanks for sharing!

  32. I love these cakes, so many good ideas and inspiration for a budget friendly but gorgeous cake.

    Here’s how I’m decorating mine:

I’ve been undecided about changing my surname, but it means a lot to me fiancé so I’m going to take the plunge and become Mrs Taylor. I’ve not told anyone (well except now all of you!) so for my Marks and Spencer cake I’m going to order a personalised wedding cake topper that says Mr & Mrs Taylor in pale blue and put that on top of the cake, as well as mixing up some blue icing, to dot all over the cake. Then I’m going to do a big ‘reveal’ at the wedding as a surprise for my husband-to-be! I think it would be such a nice wedding day surprise for him and I know the cake will look fabulous. I just need to keep quiet until the wedding day!

  33. I’ve heard SUCH great things about M&S wedding cakes, and as we’re trying to do most of our August wedding ourselves it seems the obvious option! I’ll be ordering in the next few weeks, so this would be a HUGE help. We’re going for three tiers, with lots of burlap and flowers to match the theme of the rest of the day…but it’s a military wedding, so there’ll be some little military Lego men on the top too!

  34. I’d get small dinosaur figures and spray paint them fluorescent colours and place them on the tiers of the cake. Maybe a robot on top too.

  35. Wow! I am so impressed by these stunning cakes. Definitely lots of food for thought!

I have seen cake toppers that are clay models and I’m in love with the idea of my fiancé at a grand piano (he’s a musician), me sat on top in my beautiful gown, and our two gorgeous cats by our side!
Definitely a sign of things to come – we are also buying a house this year as well as getting married and he wants a grand piano in the kitchen so he can serenade me as I cook!

  36. Music and surfing and two key themes we’d like to use for our wedding – it would be great to replicate musical notes and waves in a subtle way on our cake perhaps with flowers too. We will be having a DIY wedding in Cornwall where we met (in a surf lesson, very cheesy I know!), and I love the thought of putting our own touches onto a cake that can represent us 🙂

  37. As it’s a country garden wedding with a horticultural twist I’d like to recreate my mum’s allotment on the top of the wedding cake complete with planters and sweetpeas. She’s fairly instrumental in the planning so it would go down well!

  38. As we’re having a small affair, with close friends and family, Id like to have something that reflects our afternoon tea wedding breakfast, items from a miniature teaset with some delicate lace round the tiers

  39. Our wedding is going to be rustic and very chilled. We’d decorate the cake with lots of miniature photos of our memories together and a cake topper with words from our first dance song! 🙂

  40. My fiance and I love the idea of a day-of-the-dead themed cake. We love all things fiesta related but would tone it down as our theme is more romantic/vintage we thought we could paintly bright flowers, make sugar flowers and have some colourful pansies to cascade down the cake. Top this with bright peonies, colourful ribbons wrapping each layer and lots of pom-poms for a riot of colour!

  41. Pastel! I’d have one tier decorated with pastel Polk dots from sugar paper. The middle tier with pastel stripes and top tier with pastel chevrons (fiddly but worth it!). Then my home made cake wooden figurine cake toppers. 🙂

  42. We’re having a 60’s retro inspired wedding with music definitely playing a big part as my fiancé is a musician so decorations of vinyl records and also a red white and blue theme with some bunting would definitely look different on our cake!

  43. We are very much doing a DIY wedding in a venue which was an old veterinary uni building that now houses a Gin distillery – so naturally we are having a gin themed wedding – lots of juniper berry colours therefore we would love to have a rustic citrusy gin soaked cake with some quirky animal topperd would be amazing- as attempting to make our own might end up a total faliure and we’d not have enough gin left for the cake after trying it!

  44. Percy Pigs and Colin the Caterpillars! 🙂 whatever M&S treats I could get my hands on. We have just bought the M&S taster cakes and they are divine. So so lovely.

  45. Wow! That video is amazing – so many wonderful ideas!

Jim proposed to me with a box full of little origami stars (I love making origami stars, and traditionally they signal good luck so fitting for a wedding!) so I’d surround our cake with lots of brightly coloured origami stars and maybe see if we could find a shooting star topper of some description? Maybe even a shooting star sparkler! That would be cool.

Thanks for all the great ideas! Hx

  46. I love the idea of decorating our own wedding cake. I am very crafty and making lots of decorations for our big day. If I was to win this competition I would paint my own bride and groom peg dolls and have mr and Mrs bunting on top. I would probably also have the cake on a wooden slide and decorate the tiers with a dusty pink ribbon to match our colour theme 🙂

  47. My fiance and I are having our wedding on bonfire night 2016. So I would make our cake rock by decorating it to look like a bonfire, with the bride and groom as the guys being burnt. Hopefully this will remain metaphorical, rather than literal……..

  48. I love all of these ideas, so much fun and so different. Can never go wrong with an M&S cake! We are planning on having this same cake for our wedding and also a Collins the caterpillar cake as that’s both of our favorite cake (reminds us of being little!!). Our idea for the cake is to have a cat bride and groom sylvanian families animals as our cake toppe (happy childhood memories)…then the rest of the cake will have flowers and ivy on with a lace boarder. We like the gaps in between the cake layers to add the flowers. It will hopefully go with our relaxed barn wedding with our DIY nature/ rustic theme. We both love animals and our first home together backs onto woods. So we would like to incorporate that into our day. I have already bought a beautiful antique pink glass cake stand ☺

  49. Love all the inspiration listed above. As we are having a barn wedding with a vintage and boho feel I would jazz up the cake with lace and flowers in gold and teal along with a figure of the Whitby abbey as we had our first holiday there. I think simple is better and wouldn’t over complicate the cake but make sure it had a few key decorations.

  50. We’re still in the middle of planning everything and being very DIY-EY with it all. As a brownie leader I love crafting things from our invitations to our table centres and thr next big thing on my list-the cake! I love the idea of having a blank canvas cake to decorate ourselves! Our theme is rustic and natural/spring garden but with having a fiancee in the military we’ve have picked navy as our main colour to run through the day. If I was lucky enough to win, my ideal cake would be 4 tiers with some hessian wrapped around each tier, but every girl loves a bit of jewel and sparkle; so my idea would be to have some thin navy ribbon over lapping the hessian and then some pearls or sequins threaded into this! {Lots of hand threading to do!} The cake would be topped with an old fashioned style plane – like the ones used in ww2 and some bunting attached to the end of this plane saying ‘True Love.’

  51. skulls and roses! I’m making dozens of mini chocolate skulls, buying a large chocolate skull (maybe 2) for the top, and will either make sugar roses or buy real roses, depending on time. We have a ’till death do us part’ theme.

  52. We’re having a winter wedding and honeymoon in Paris. Our M&S cake will be decorated with silver stars, topped with a model Eiffel Tower and sparklers added for a magical touch

  53. I’m soo excited to decorate my marks and Spencer’s cake. I will wrap a navy ribbon around it, and pipe navy patterns on it. My sister is teaching herself to make sugar flowers that can go on it too.

  54. I made my own wedding cake 4 years ago (many, many hours involved in making sugar roses!!) and now have the massive honour of making my sisters for her wedding in December. I would love this beautiful marks and spencer cake for her wedding and would adorn it with Silver leaf, adding to her Christmas touch. I plan on making a beautiful paper cut to add to the top (as I do this also 😉 )
    Cant wait!!!

  55. I’m painting watercolour invites and decorations to fit in with our ombre green colour scheme and flower plans so I would paint food dye flowers over each layer and then top it with two narwhals (our pet name for each other. …long story) crossing horns made from sparklers which can be lit when we cut the cake.

  56. I’m a simple gal at heart but would love to go all out on the wedding cake. My fiancé has the biggest sweet tooth so would love to decorate it with all with his favourite sweets – think haribo hearts, flying saucers and cola bottles but not forgetting his ultimate fave – Percy Pigs!

  57. Love the cakes! I’d throw as much colour at the poor cake as physically possible. In tear drop shapes and ribbion 🙂

  58. I’m getting married 9th December 2017 (eeeeekkkk!)

The bottom tier will be decorated with cadbury flakes around it to look like tree bark with a blue and green ribbon to tie them together.

Middle tier will have the blue ribbon on with pinecones decorated off the side.

Third tier with green ribbon with pinecones off the opposite side, and for the top decorated with holly and mistletoe.

  59. I’m looking forward to designing my granddaughters 5th birthday cake with her using these cakes. She has very set ideas about what she would like and as such this would be great to design her own – I think she will choose all her favourite things and then make it look like they are having a swimming or beach party
