Cat & Dan

Dan and Cat love the ocean. They also love to travel. They are sweet and genuine and good-natured and relaxed. But mostly, they love each other dearly. All of these things were reflected in their beautiful wedding overlooking the Sea in Stanford, South Africa. The flowers consisted of locally grown indigenous dusty pink Proteas and a variety of shrubbery, which perfectly complemented the neutral tones of the bridal party’s outfits. Cat’s dress was flowy and free with the most gorgeous lace and beadwork on the sleeves and back. Loads of candles and a live jazz band made for a warm and ambient atmosphere in the evening.

The Bride

Cat The Bride: As the wedding was in South Africa and the ceremony was outside, I had to be very careful about dress choice so I didn’t end up melting in the African sun! The dress was actually the second one I tried on, but I still did the customary ‘try another 30 on just to be sure’, but i could never really get this beautiful gown out of my head and in the end, nothing else came close. The dress was called Cherish by Suzanne Neville and it was absolutely perfect as it had plenty of detail on the top, including those gorgeous pearly sleeves which glistened in the sunlight, but was sufficiently floaty and light on the bottom so that i didn’t overheat. It also had a fantastic ‘swish’ factor for those romantic photos on the beach and for dancing! The amount of detail on the sleeves meant that I didn’t need much additional jewellery, so I opted for some square diamond earrings from a small jewellery in Alton, and some pearl hair pins that I bought from Miss Bush. I wore a long simple veil for the ceremony bought from Miss Bush. I had my hair up so it didn’t get in the way of the beautiful detail of the dress and my make up was heavy on the eyes and light on the lips.

Groom’s fashion

Dan is very particular about his clothes, but being tall, finds it difficult to buy suits that fit him correctly. He’d heard about Cad and the Dandy from a friend who’d had a great experience there, so off we went to Savile Row to discuss a fully bespoke suit with the tailors. The whole experience was fantastic, with lots of fittings to make sure it fitted perfectly. Dan was also concerned with the heat, but wanted a suit that he could wear again after the wedding, so we selected a light navy blue fabric and a light mustard tweed for a waistcoat. His spectacular brown and cream shoes, which really brought the whole outfit together, were bought from Barker.

The Venue

South Africa – Hermanus in particular – is a very special place to us. We have both lived in Cape Town at various times before meeting each other, Dan’s grandmother lives in Hermanus and we got engaged on the beach in Hermanus in 2013 – so we wanted to get married somewhere nearby. Dan’s aunt Donae runs an events business in Cape Town and suggested Grootbos as a venue. As most of our friends live in the UK and were travelling a long way to be at the wedding, we wanted to be able to thank them by hosting them at the venue for the night. Grootbos fitted the brief perfectly. We had the whole venue to ourselves for the night and our guests stayed in cottages nestled in the Fynbos – the indigenous plant life – with views over beautiful beaches. We made the most of the space with the ceremony on the deck outside, sundowners on the top deck with a saxophone player and canapes, reception and dinner and dancing inside and a fire pit and fairy lights running throughout the night. Because we had the place to ourselves, the party could go on all night (it almost did, ending at around 4am!)

Bridesmaid’s Fashion

I found it quite difficult to find bridesmaid’s dresses that weren’t too heavy or long – again the heat was always a concern. Eventually I found the perfect off-white dress in Reiss. They were simple aline knee length, but had a sort of mesh detail at the top which complemented my dress perfectly and were light enough so that no one overheated! I wanted the bridesmaids to have the same hair and make up so they all had up dos with a plait detail and their make up was similar to mind with a heavy eye and light lips. They all looked so gorgeous!

Groomsmen Fashion

We wanted the groomsmen in waistcoats to tie in with what Dan was wearing. Dan managed to find a tailor online who made some lovely grey tweed waistcoats. The boys were then asked to wear navy blue trousers and white shirts and Dan bought some maroon red ties which he also wore. There was no need for jackets! As gifts for the groomsmen he ordered some bespoke, handmade silver and black wood cuff links in the shape of Africa which he also wore on the day. The flower girl was very particular about what she wore! I let her decide on her outfit and I wasn’t disappointed. She chose a bright pink dress which contrasted nicely with the off white bridesmaids dresses and had small feathers in her hair which were really pretty.

Pink Colour Scheme

We didn’t really opt for a colour scheme as such. The venue had so much natural beauty that we didn’t want to take anything away from that. This influenced our choice of flowers. We chose pink queen proteas for the bouquets along with the natural fynbos plants that you find surrounding the nature reserve. We had a few candles on each table to created that beautiful soft light for the photos in the evening. We had a sketch of a protea mocked up which featured on the name cards and table plans.

The Ceremony

We had only corresponded with our reverend via email and met him face to face once before the ceremony. We had asked for a non religious ceremony but something personalised. He understood straight away and delivered a perfect service which really represented our values and attitude to life.

The Entertainment

We had Cape Town’s number one wedding DJ – DJ Rene, entertaining us! He comes with a band including saxophonist and bongo player. We were asked to put together a playlist of 20 songs that we really wanted to be played throughout the night and then Rene added the rest. We love music so this was a very important aspect of the wedding for us. The saxophonist played on the deck while people were enjoying the canapés and then Rene took over with the full band until 2am. We chose Fat Boy Slim Praise You as our slightly alternative first dance!

The Food

Food is another very important thing to us! Luckily Grootbos, being a 5 star resort, had an excellent chef who provided the most exceptional 7 course meal! Because we weren’t in the country, we couldn’t do the tasting ourselves, but Donae and Sarah our wedding planners selected a menu that highlighted some South African flavours including Snoek pate, souvide lamb and rooibos creme brûlée. We got a lot of compliments from our guests on the food. We chose a fantastic local South African MCC, Claudia, Domaine des dieux, from the Hemel en Aarde valley as our ‘champagne’.

The cake was a three tiered with Victoria sponge on top, buttermilk chocolate in the middle and spiced carrot on the bottom, all surrounded with vanilla buttercream icing and decorated with flowers. It was divine!

Photography

We were lucky to have Tabitha and her colleague from Illuminate Photography as our photographers on the day and we had so much fun! Grootbos and the surrounding area provided so much variety for the photos, the fynbos, the beach, the deck with the incredible view etc. we wanted some soft natural shots which is exactly what we got! All in all the wedding was exactly what we wanted. We had all our friends staying on site for the night which meant we didn’t need to rush through anything. We were lucky enough to have lovely weather, (not too hot) and to be in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

  1. One of the best wedding ever. The 20 songs they gave me was one of the best and creative selection of music I have received for a long time for a wedding. This is rare!
Being a DJ who interact with musicians we are unique in that sense.
Cat and Dan, Thank you so much for trusting us for the music and in making your special day a one to remember for ever.
Spread the words in UK for DJ Rene. I want to do some great weddings there in summer. One love from the Frenchman…
