Clare & James

In true fairytale fashion our Bride & Groom got married in a hill top castle and then enjoyed a rustic marquee reception at Highdown Vineyard.

The marquee was decorated beautifully with hessian table runners, tree slabs, pine cones and the most amazing rich autumnal toned flowers. Clare even managed to hand pick some of the blooms from her parents garden – bonus!

Even though you can see from the photos our Bride & Groom endured a rain soaked ceremony, they still look blissfully happy. So thank the heavens they were then blessed with a sun soaked evening as that sunset picture is AMAZE!

Bursting with fabulous fashion (the lace, the tweed – oh my! ) and breathtaking views, enjoy this wonderful, picturesque wedding, it’s pin-tastic!

General Wedding/Feel

Clare The Bride: Our day was really all about being comfortable, laid back and totally us. We wanted to encapsulate the warmth and comfort of our relationship with autumnal accents and rustic charm. We really just wanted it to feel simple, natural and stripped back and I think we managed to achieve that. We wrote our own vows, James wrote the music for my entrance and we picked some of our favourite (non weddingy) songs for the string quartet to play, Including Game of Thrones and Cindy Lauper ha! It was totally us.
For us we chucked out the wedding rule book and just did what felt right. That’s the best advice I can offer anyone out there. Do whatever feels right for you both and don’t worry about the rest.

Venues

Our venues were both blank canvases. Lewes Castle beauty is in its panoramic views of nature, steeped in history, and yet simple and charming. When we saw it we knew we had to get married there. James had jokingly said one day lets get married in a castle, and that was the only reason we even checked out Lewes. It is such a local gem, even if you just go for a day visit.

We stumbled across Highdown Vineyard one day when I went for tea with my mum. Again it is just so beautiful surrounded by nature and has such simplicity. It gave us the blank canvas we wanted to create our autumnal setting. Aly and Paul from the Vineyard were just great and took on all our crazy ideas and homemade décor on board and worked with us 100%. They were so accommodating and made our day truly wonderful.

Bride/Groom Style

I knew I wanted to wear something simple and classic. My only two things I knew going into the search was that I loved lace and I wanted to be able to move around freely, whilst still feeling like it was my wedding day. I tried the dress on and my Mum and Sister were in tears, bearing in mind I had left the house no makeup and hair tossed into a bun, I knew it was a keeper. Lucy Bennett is probably the friendliest person ever, she made it so easy for me to get the dress perfect, even down to adding the lace detail ¾ length sleeves I had dreamed of. Spending time with her in her shop was just a dream. She even mad the Mother of the Bride Dress for my Mum.

When it came to the guys we wanted to get the same vibe, wedding day feel without going traditional. We looked around for tweed style suits and settled on high street brands to keep costs down, and hopefully get something people could wear again. We picked a selection of quirky bow ties to go with the rustic tweed suits. James looked super handsome and at the same time a little geeky.

Colours

We wanted to keep it muted and autumnal. We both love green and my engagement ring is an emerald so we knew a nice muted autumnal green had to be included. It basically all stemmed from there and overall we went for a forest pallet; greens, browns, greys and creams. Not your typical wedding colours but we loved the simple rustic tones of the great outdoors.

Flowers

We bought the flowers for the bouquets from the Artisan Dried Flower Company. They also made my hair circlet. I loved the idea of dried flower bouquets, something different and a little more sustainable. They also seemed to smell like tea! Bonus!

The flowers for the table decorations were all totally random. We spent a day going round florists and flower markets, trying things out. Not only did it save us money but it was great fun. We loved that nothing matched, no two were the same and it looked like random flowers we’d just picked out of the ground. Truth be told some were stolen from my folks garden!!

Cake

Seriously if you do nothing else go try Ione’s cakes from Twit Twoo Bakery. She is one incredible woman and her cakes are to die for. We went for cupcakes in differing autumnal flavours; Carrot cake, spiced pumpkin, salted caramel, and red velvet! We also had a two tier top cake that was decorated with cascading autumn leaves. I’m not exaggerating, all the cake went at the wedding and that is purely down to its melt in the mouth deliciousness!!

Photographers

Christine and Xander of Navy Blur are the two sweetest people. Their pictures are so quirky and well just stunning. In our case they took two totally un-photogenic people and turned us in to the Bride and Groom you see above. We chose them as we admired the amazing pictures they had created for some of our friend’s weddings. We knew how uncomfortable we both are in front of the camera and it was super important to find people who could make it as least painful as possible. They did just that and so much more. We couldn’t be happier with our pictures and this is such a big part of your day to get right, these are our lasting memories of that crazy day back in October when we said “I do”!

Thank You’s

There are tow many people to thank individually, but I wanted to just put a shout out to those people (you know who you are) who laughed and smiled with us throughout the sometimes hectic process of planning a wedding on a budget. Your love and support for James and I is unwavering and we could not be happier to have had you with us on that day! We love you!

    1. The photography from Navyblur is gorgeous isn’t it? I love how the dramatic changes in light and weather have been captured and yep, both venues are pretty spectacular!! A castle then a vineyard?! Sound perfect to me.

    1. Great choice Keeley; it’s so pretty! Such a fabulous length to show off your shoes and the delicate illusion neck line & lace sleeves are heavenly x
