Emma & Robert

Whenever we feature a wedding at Kinkell Byre near St Andrew's in Scotland we are reminded of those magical fairy lights and its breathtaking location and it still gives me goosebumps. I absolutely love how each couple decorate the venue, and as you can imagine with Emma working as a creative consultant at Form and Balance the results are pretty spectacular. She uses tree stumps & slices with candle light and foliage, plus my absolute favourite the hoop table plan and beef cut table names. This may be a Winter wedding, but it's so cosy and full of sparkle, including the ladies Jenny Packham gowns, and did I mention the fairy lights? The Dress

Emma the Bride: I had no idea what style of wedding dress I wanted I just knew I didn’t want anything too glam or over the top. I got my wedding dress when I was 8 weeks pregnant so it was a bit of a guessing game for size post baby, but luckily it fit on the day which was a good thing because it was a fully embellished “Esme” Jenny Packham Dress. I absolutely loved my dress, it was the first one I tried on and knew I didn’t need to try on any more.

The Grooms Fashion

Robert wore a kilt made with a modern tartan called silver mist and a light lomond grey tweed fitted jacket – which he hired from Magregor and Macduff. He wore a matching tartan tie, flashes and plaid (the fabric drapped over his shoulder) His best men wore matching kilts however they had opposite coloured accessories to Robert.

The Venue

Kinkell Byre was the first and last venue we looked at. We wanted somewhere that we could really get creative with and dress to our taste. The barn is made up of a few areas and the space has a great flow to it so we knew it would work well for the humanist ceremony and the reception. Not to mention the perfect fife coast was right on our doorstep.

Colour Scheme/Decor

As a creative consultant with my own design and styling company Form and Balance, it was really important for me to have a wedding that represented both of us a couple. We went for a Scandi inspired colour scheme of cool grey, charcoal, sage green and gold to add more of a textured element. The decor for the venue had a rustic and industrial feel we wanted everything to feel contemporary but in keeping with the venue. The décor was designed around our wedding invites that I designed myself. We used a botanical drawing throughout the theme. Gold foiled dipped bird logs in different sizes were dotted around the venue and dresses with candles, glass jars, bottles and foliage. I had collected jars of various different sizes so that I had a really eclectic bunch for the table centres and for the rest of the venue. I spray painted some of the jars and wine bottles then wrapped twine around the top so we could use them for either cases or candles. Our tables were named after cuts of steak, we used giant glass demijohns with ripped textured paper attached around the jar using more green twine. We chose long wooden trestle tables from Virginia Vintage Hire, which worked great for our relaxed yet intimate reception. I hand made and designed everything from the wedding invitations, table runners, napkin decor, our favours - individual bags of handmade tablet from my nana. Our table plan was made up of a giant wooden hoop threaded with green twine and ripped texted paper, the circular theme was continued on from our "in the round" ceremony, logs and flower hoops suspended from the barn beams.

Flowers/Florist

I got a lot of my supplier ideas from the Wedding Collective – my florist of choice was Floral Menagerie. Lisa has a beautiful contemporary, edgy and relaxed style that I fell in love with immediately. I met with her a year before the wedding to discuss what I wanted and she took the idea and ran with it. I gave her free reign to do what she wanted and it totally paid off. My flowers were one of my most favorite part of the day and I can’t applaud her talent enough.

The Wedding Party Fashion

Like the wedding dress, the bridesmaid’s dresses were the first ones we spotted and coincidently they were also Jenny Packham. I didn’t want my bridemaids to have typical dresses and the dark grey charcoal colour really suited them all. The flower girls dresses were both from John Lewis and accessories from Monsoon.

Ceremony

The Bridal party was piped in by my brother Grant Noble. We held our humanist ceremony in “the round” with humanist celebrant Paul Patterson. He was fantastic, he made the whole ceremony really casual and there was a great camaraderie, which relaxed everyone. We had two readings, the first was from Captain Corelli's Mandolin. The second was a surprise; before the wedding Robert and I were given the “Don’ts for Wives and Don’ts for Husbands” by Blanche Ebbutt. We each picked a selection of “Don’ts” for eachother for our marriage. On the day my godmother read them out and it was really funny to hear what eachother had picked. As part of the ceremony we also had the Scottish traditions of hand tieing and the drinking from the Quaich. It was great to include these traditions as we had such an informal ceremony.

Entertainment


We had the brand Brightside who performed both Chelidh and a great selection of dance music. Our first dance was Chuck Berry “You Never Can Tell”.

Food

For food there was only one option and that was to go with Aberdeenshire family business Country Flavours of Alford, as I done some previous work for them. Liz, the owner kindly agreed to come all the way to St. Andrews for us which we really appreciated. Our canapés were sticky piglets, shin of beef in mini Yorkshire puddings, mini fish and chips and oatcakes with cheese and homemade chutney. Our starters were a choice of soup or salmon parcel, our mains were chicken suedois or individual steak pie followed by trio of deserts. We wanted a really hearty and simple meal that everyone would enjoy. For the evening buffet we had a hog roast followed by our wedding cakes.  The food was absolutely outstanding and we couldn't have asked for a better service. Our cake table was made up from a selection of amazing cakes by Aberdeenshire local baker "Bakery Lane”. Our wedding cake was a gold dipped vanilla sponge and was topped off with comical bride and groom giraffes. Our other cakes were a salted caramel chocolate cake, white chocolate and raspberry sponge, carrot cake, brownies and toffee cookies.

Photographer

We chose Caro Weiss because of her relaxed and arty style of photography. It was important to both of us to have a photographer who made us feel relaxed as neither of us are very comfortable in front of the camera. She didn’t make us do any of the clichéd poses and she gave us time as a couple after the ceremony just to be alone and laugh together – she captured these moments perfectly. I cant recommend her enough.

Videographer

A close friend of mine Jamie Vincent Gillespie is a very talented producer and even though it took some coaxing he agreed to film our day. He captured all the special moments and details that sometimes go unnoticed on the day, our wedding film is really relaxed and contemporary. He knew exactly what we wanted and got it spot on.

Final Thoughts

Finally we have to say a huge special thanks to the my Parents to whom without them our wedding wouldn’t have been possible. And to friends and family who generously gave up their time to and helped tirelessly in the lead up as well as with post-wedding clear up efforts! We couldn’t have pulled it off without them!
