Inspiration

By day our gorgeous bride and groom have important roles in environmental conservation, so a relaxed outdoor wedding surrounded by nature at The Green Cornwall was their perfect venue. Guests walked through the woodland, past the coloured origami paper cranes decor to the adorable 'enchanted forest' ceremony, and then back again to partake in garden games, chill out in the zones filled with rugs, blankets and cushions, and enjoy a wedding breakfast in the barn announced by a giant horn. Photographer Ben Selway made full use of the venue, capturing some epic portraits by the barn & festoon lights, not to mention some truly breathtaking portraits in the field during dusk. Plus those bouquet toss captures are pure gold.

Dress

Kate the Bride: Anneliese is an Australian wedding dress designer based out of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. A friend had recommended her and as soon as I met her the first time I knew that she would understand what I wanted. I had tried on some designs in the UK which weren’t quite right so she worked with my ideas and incorporated my desire for a flowing skirt with a floral lace bodice. I was able to select the lace in Cambodia, then Anneliese made a cotton sample which after fitting was then made with the real material. One of the key things for me was not wanting to wear shoes. I hate wearing high heels and always feel like an idiot sinking into grass like a fork at posh do’s. Given we were very keen to be outside on the day, barefoot or pumps seemed like the best option. I’m always happier in bare feet. Anneliese kindly made some small decorative lace covers for me feet which fit around my toe and ankle. The effect was brilliant.

The Venue

The Green Cornwall - we wanted an outdoor wedding surrounded by nature and The Green was perfect. The ceremony was held in a beautiful clearing in a wood next to a peaceful pond. A beautiful converted farmhouse nestled in the Cornish countryside. The grounds are spectacular allowing our guests to spill out into the sunshine We chose our venue whilst living overseas and the green had amazing 360 photos, plans and maps that gave us great insight into the space and layout and after speaking to the planners we were confident to book it. And seeing the place for the first time surpassed our expectations.

Colour Scheme/Decor

We wanted a relaxed informal wedding, surrounded by nature, friends and good vibes. Outdoors, bohemian, low fuss Avoiding the village fete vibe we were anti bunting, we had 400 origami cranes - painstakingly hand made by my friend Hermione - decorated the walkway that winds up through the woods from the ceremony arbour gave the venue a fairy tale feel. Golden Chinese lanterns lining the steps to the dinning hall gave the venue an Eastern feel reflecting our time spent in Asia. We wanted to reflect our love for marine and forest life (we both work as conservation scientists). We were able to sprinkle touches of this throughout, bay leaves with golden writing marked each place name on the tables, tables were named after different animals and plants, rather than flowers we opted for a more sustainable option of glass bowls filled with forest and ocean scenes. At night the lanterns were illuminated with sneakily hidden fairy lights inside, 100’s of tea lights lit the walkways around the venue and a selection of exotic teas were served after dinner, with the option to take these into a chill out area.

The Wedding Party Fashion

My two bridesmaids wore dresses from Coast, my niece (5 y.o) wore a white dress with lace to match mine from Coast. My best man wore a blue linen shirt and chinos.

Ceremony

We had readings by the Persian Poet of love Hafiz also Kate’s friend sung ‘All yours’ by Submotion Orchestra and there wasn’t a dry eye in the space The bouquet toss: Kate decided to make it male and female which in hindsight was perhaps a little risky! Some guests (even the married ones) got quite into it! Which did lead to a series of hilarious photographs and perhaps a less funny bruise for one friend. Oh and Kate’s family gate crashing uninvited! Awks! But masterfully handled by Kate at The Green Cornwall and her team

Food

Mini Scone Canapes followed by a BBQ menu. We opted for a cake of cheese provided by The Green which was a great way to give people a snack mid-way through dancing!

Photographer

We met Ben during a trip to Cornwall a few months before the wedding and came away feeling like we had met someone we’d known for years. Super communicative to deal with and on the day did a wonderful job of capturing family moments without being bossy or a dominant presence. Such a great energy and presence throughout, fun and creative. We were delighted with his work. Would have loved to have him along as a guest too! Such a great guy.
