Inspiration

Katy and Jon's gorgeous coastal wedding is probably going to knock your socks off, so brace yourselves. Every last detail has been carefully planned, styled and articulated perfectly, but the final result is so welcoming and beautiful. There are lots of our favourite suppliers involved, Elle at The Artful Event Co. helped to bring Katy's vision for her wedding day to life and the gorgeous images and film from A Thing Like That and Baxter and Ted really show what a wonderful day everyone had. Then there's the mobile bar like no other - The Buffalo Bar, who I think should be a guest at every wedding...Katy and Jon's welcome drinks sounded delicious and it looks so incredible perched on a coastal clifftop. This is a RMW wedding through and through so sit back, relax and enjoy this glorious wedding day.

The Bride

Katy the Bride: It was only ever going to be Anna Campbell for me and it was love at first sight! Her dresses are so different from anyone else’s and it was a perfect match for our relaxed, coastal wedding. I travelled up to London to visit stockist Blackburn Bridal Couture with my best friend and Maid of Honour Mira. I tried on five Anna Campbell's and could have honestly worn any of them. I chose the Coco as I loved the combination of intricate beading with touches of lace. The veil perfectly complemented the dress as it was simple but with beautiful detail on the fringing. I am also a big fan of Claire Pettibone so it was lovely that I combine the two designers. Engagement ring – this was handed down by my grandma and my parents gave it to Jon when he went to ask permission to marry me. It’s such a beautiful ring and I much prefer vintage jewellery that has a story behind it. Wedding ring – two rings made to my design to fit around wedding ring (one with white diamonds and one with black diamonds) and the gold used was from my great grandma’s wedding ring. It was lovely to have some creative input into the design of the wedding rings as the engagement ring was a family heirloom. Having two rings is great as I can just wear the one or both if I feel like some extra sparkle!

The Groom

You are more likely to see Jon in a wetsuit than a suit! The groom and groomsmen’s outfits were kept very simple.

The Venue

We both live by and spend a lot of time on the coast and we had fallen in love with the church at Porthilly. We often take our miniature Daschund Luna for walks there or go kayaking from the beach. The fact that we could have the reception nearby alongside the water made it even more perfect for us.

The Decor

Jon and I met on the beach and much of our time together since has involved being on the sand or in the water. Therefore, it was fitting that our wedding should be coastal. We also didn’t want anything too formal. Our theme was a coastal summer wedding – romantic, elegant and relaxed. Green and white with hints of gold and pink. Porthilly mussels featured on all the stationery – drawn by local illustrator Nicole Heidaripour. The mussels are harvested in the estuary alongside the field by Rock Shell Fish and you get a lovely scattering of mussel shells in the field, beach and church grounds. Table centres were scandi lanterns by Broste with Eucalyptus wreaths surrounding them. The table names were local beaches (head table was called Porthilly) and calligraphy was by Kayleigh Tarrant. In the evening, we lit the large fireball fire pit and sat around it on the vintage deckchairs wrapped in soft blankets and toasting marshmallows.

The Flowers

Bouquet, button hole, head table kilner jars and eucalyptus wreaths for lanterns by Wadebridge Flowers. Larger installations such as the floral circular installation by Elle Grime of Inspire Hire. The large floral arch was something I wanted from the very beginning. The idea was for it to be a focal point and people could take photos of them standing in the middle of it. With the beautiful water backdrop, it was a really special feature. This was mirrored with the 3 large, circular floral installations hanging from the roof of the marquee. Our miniature dappled Daschund Luna joined us for an hour in the marquee. Elle made her a floral collar. She was very excited by all the people there and was happy as long as someone was throwing a ball for her.

The Ceremony

A simple ceremony carried out by Reverend Elizabeth Wild. Readings by my godfather Richard Pugh and Jon’s sister Catherine which had come all the way from New Zealand. My grandma couldn’t make the wedding so the reverend read her favourite reading from the bible on her behalf. Rather than an organist we had Joss White sing and play his guitar. He sang a cover of Kodaline, The One as I walked up the aisle.

The Entertainment

Joss White – sung in the church and at the reception including the first dance. He is from Cornwall and Jon and I used to go and watch his acoustic gigs on the beach at SurfSide, Polzeath when we were dating. Our first dance was Joss’s version of the song How Long I Love You by The Waterboys. The ZuZu Men from Bristol – band in the evening. I was so pleased that they could make our wedding as I had seen them perform years ago and thought they were amazing. They have such a cool an unique style and their covers included something for everyone.

The Food

We wanted a relaxed meal without doing the traditional 3 courses. Fee Turner lives locally to us and she produces such incredible food which is all so beautifully presented. A selection of canapes such as: - Tiny puff pastries with tamarind and coriander spied leeks, courgettes and carrots served with mango chutney. - Moroccan harissa spiced chicken with concassee tomato lime and parsley served on a china spoon. - Mac and cheese fries served with homemade ketchup. - Tiny puff sausage rolls with sweet shallot and apple with homemade ketchup. Mains - sharing platters - Chargrilled, marinated butterfly chicken breast - Seared mackerel fillets served on wooden boards - Harissa marinated skewers of halloumi, aubergines, peppers and courgettes with lemon and grainy mustard, garlic and coriander dressing. Sides - Mango, avocado, red chili, coriander, lime salsa - Hot buttered new potatoes with parsley, mint and chives - Griddled Cornish asparagus with peas, broccoli and fine beans - Summer leaf salad with rocket, radicchio, chicory, and mustard Dessert - Ice cream palettes – vanilla bean ice-cream and blackcurrant sorbet in waffle cones - Chocolate pot Cake was made by mother of the groom Debbie Waters Bar Having The Buffalo Bar in the field which is a converted airstream caravan was such a lovely feature and they served an amazing selection of cocktails and local craft beers etc. The welcome drinks were Elderflower Collins.

The Photography

I have worked with Rebecca before and she is an amazing photographer. I love her natural style and we didn’t want too many posed shots. We couldn’t be happier with the photos which capture the day perfectly.

The Videography

Baxter and Ted were a perfect fit for our wedding as the films they make are different from the usual wedding video. They use a combination of old and new formats – digital and film. Part of the filming was done using a Super 8 camera which produces such a lovely romantic effect. It has to be sent off to be processed and Iove the old-fashioned excitement of waiting for it to be developed.

Favourite Moment

When the sun started coming through the clouds everyone came outside for our first dance. The tide was in with boats bobbing alongside the field and the light was really beautiful. Joss sung How Long with I Love You by The Waterboys and played his guitar and everyone joined in and danced with us – it was a really magical moment.

Advice

For the bride and bridesmaids – however much time you think you have to get ready it never seems to be enough! It's lovely to have time when you and your bridesmaids are ready and can relax, enjoy a drink together and take some photos before leaving for the church. Set a time to be ready by and then bring it forward an hour. Then you will ensure you aren’t too rushed to fully enjoy the lovely moments with your best friends. For the bride and groom – it is easy to say and harder to do as the day will be a magical whirlwind but try and keep in mind that this is probably the only day where all your friends and family will be in one place at the same time. They are all there for you and there is so much love directed your way – try and savour every moment as it will go so quickly!
