Cosmopolitan couple, Sophie & Taro, planned this lush London wedding from their home in Tokyo - and it's a knockout. Bride Sophie took inspiration for the botanical styling after falling in love with Rewritten's marine green bridesmaid's dresses; little wonder they are one of RMW's recommended suppliers when they can clad your besties so beautifully and create your colour scheme. Sophie's stunning gown also comes courtesy of another RMW fashion favourite, Grace Loves Lace, whose Verdelle dress, with its lace cape and low square back, is the height of contemporary cool. With tantalising touches throughout the day, including a neon sign to designate the altar and a four-tier Lily Vanilli cake, this wedding is a truly tasty treat.
How We Chose Our Suppliers
Taro and I moved to Tokyo from East London 3 years ago, and got engaged overlooking a stunning view of Mount Fuji and the Tokyo skyline. As most of our friends and family live in the London area, however, it was important for us to have our wedding there, despite the fact that we currently live on the other side of the world! Most of our suppliers were East London based, which was a nod to the place we used to call home. We planned the wedding from Japan, but were lucky enough to have the help of my sister Carly, who did all the styling, and even designed and sent out our invitations (including handwriting all of the addresses!).
Neon Sign at Altar
We've seen many amazing altars on these pages - from Chinese paper fans to cherry blossom trees and moon gates - but this neon sign has to be one of the most creative. With a backdroup of beautiful botanicals by Grace & Thorn, the neon altar carries lyrics of the song bride Sophie walked down the aisle to (You & Me by Penny & The Quarters). Many of our friends and family doubted whether we’d be able to pull off a wedding in London while living in Japan, and yes, it was undoubtedly a crazy thing to do! But if you’re thinking of getting married in a different county to the one that you live in, it’s not as impossible as you’d think. Most of the organising took place via email – as I imagine most brides would tell you nowadays anyway – and if you are lucky enough to have someone to help you on the ground, make use of them; it makes a big difference.
Choosing a wedding venue is one of the first things most engaged couples embark on, but it can also be one of the trickiest (and most time-consuming) decisions. Sophie & Taro selected The Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green after having a celebratory birthday meal at their restaurant some years earlier. They wanted to get legally married, hold their reception and stay overnight all in the same place, and these credentials were a huge factor in them saying 'I do' to their venue.
