Planning

As soon as May rolls around, we get really, really, REALLY excited because it means the start of peony season here in the UK is imminent! We LOVE this flower, it's bold, it's beautiful, and as you'll see from our mood boards below, can be used in lots of different ways to make your wedding decor look incredible. There are numerous varieties of peony and we've included a handy guide to the most popular varieties for weddings, so that you can ask your florist for the particular type of peony you've fallen for. Also, I'd like to thank the lovely florists from The List, who kindly sent lots of images for this feature - in fact they sent so many that my inbox practically crashed and we just couldn't use them all! So if you're looking for a florist I urge you to check out our recommended suppliers, as I honestly have never come across such a helpful, kind and talented group of people before. Get ready to immerse yourself in a world of gorgeous peonies...

Pastel, Pink and White Shades

Peonies add gorgeous texture to floral displays because generally they are bigger than most flower heads. We love that they can look neat and round when they are closed or wild and blousy when they are open, and the subtle differences in colour - pinks, whites and creams make a gorgeous combination when put together, or look fabulous as a statement bouquet using a single shade of bloom. We love them used on cakes, adorning hair and used in abundance in bouquets. But if your budget won't stretch that far, a few definitely do go a long way - this is a flower that makes a statement, even as a single stem.

Bold, Bright and Beautiful

There's no denying that a coral charm peony steals the show - they are just such a statement flower, literally bursting with colour. And they look stunning when paired with lots of other colourful blooms too, because of their sunset shades. Whether your colour palette uses bold tones or not, definitely throwing in a few coral charm peonies as they just look incredible and really make a floral display look rich and opulent. There are over 100 varieties of peony, but we've listed a few of the most popular ones for weddings below. If you're after a more comprehensive list, the Kelways website provides lots of detail on varieties of herbaceous peonies (they last longer after being cut than tree grown peonies). With their lush, full, rounded bloom, peonies embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage - which makes them perfect as wedding flowers!
