Sally & David

This morning’s lovely Bride Sally is wearing one of our absolute favourite designers – Charlotte Balbier, and doesn’t she look beautiful? The Clementine gown fits her like a glove and is perfect for her relaxed yet sophisticated Spanish fiesta wedding. (And remember you can see more stunning Charlotte Balbier dresses right here on RMW).

Sally and David didn’t even visit their venue before booking their big day, putting all their trust in Rachel Rose – one of our Love Lust List recommended wedding planners, to find the perfect place for them. And she definitely succeeded! The Spanish Villa where they held their ceremony and reception is just beautiful! Set high in the mountains, with sea views, surrounded by countryside, it really is idyllic.

The Dress

Sally The Bride: The tale of ‘Dress-Gate’ was a bumpy ride, one that I am now allowed to be honest about as I (eventually) confessed all to the Groom 😉 I bought a lovely gown on my second shopping trip and never looked at another dress. Until about 2 weeks before my wedding that is…I visited a sample sale at The White Closet with my bridesmaid to look for accessories and ‘stumbled’ upon a dress that the designer herself (Charlotte Balbier) had mentioned that I would like; a year previously at a show to launch her new collection, scouting for said bridesmaid’s wedding dress at the time. Fate and bridezilla panic consumed me and I bought Clementine. No one would ever know, right? I sold the first dress a few months later and vowed to tell all future brides the following; ‘try on a thousand dresses if you need to. Don’t try to be Cool Bride and settle because it’s nice. You’ll know when you have your perfect dress and when you have it, DO NOT visit another bridal store until you are safely wed’ it’s an expensive error!!

The Wedding Party

My bridesmaids and bridesman are a beautiful, stylish, talented bunch and it was important to me that their creativity was well and truly exploited! They crafted, innovated and helped me so much along the way. Special mention must go to Kathryn Battrick (Kathryn Alexander Designs) who made the painstakingly ornate bridesmaids and bridal headpiece, and to Kelly-Marie Gunn (Maid of Honour) for keeping all of the girls happy with her handmade, chic, waist-cinching sashes.

Joseph Deering my bridesman, style guru and Man of Honour trawled around shops with me for months, whilst I tried on every pair of electric blue shoes in sight. I settled on a stunning and unique pair of Roberto Cavalli heels featuring Hummingbird charms; the symbol for hope and happiness.

As Dave had so many groomsmen, we wanted a casual look that would suit the masses. Custom made bow ties in pinks and mint green and polka dot waistcoats from ASOS turned the riff raff into dapper gents; special thanks go to Jamie Street for being the only man there able to tie a bow tie. All of them!

The Venue

Cortijo Pedro Jimenez, Estepona, Marbella. Dave and I knew that we wanted a wedding in Spain. It’s a country where we had shared many special trips and made countless weird and wonderful plans for the future. It must be something in the Rioja. We did not visit our venue before the wedding. Quite a gamble! We based our decision on countless rave reviews, pictures and the support of the Rachel Rose team. We put our faith in them and they well and truly delivered. The bridal party all stayed in the Cortijo for the days leading up to and after the wedding. Arriving together and seeing the magical venue for the first time with everyone was a precious memory that I will hold on to as dearly as the day itself!

The Decor

The theme that tied everything together for us was Music and Travel; both major parts of ours lives. Dave and I as a new couple travelled through South East Asia and we were involved in a car accident in Malaysia that left us with serious injuries. It was a shocking and difficult time that we overcame together. Dave proposed on the last leg of our adventure at the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and it marked the end of a chapter that shaped the couple we would be forever. Our table plan was a map of the world and each table was a place that held significance; Kuala Lumpur, Manchester, Las Vegas, Brisbane, Madrid, Trinidad; each holding tales of why that made us, ‘us’.

Our wedding favours and place names were CDs; a playlist of tracks guests would hear on the day, and favourite songs that we hoped would take them back to our sunny Cortijo for years to come. I still get messages now from friends and family who are stuck in a traffic jam, listening to our CD and reminded of what a great time they had. Bonus.

The Flowers

Our florist
was Janne Valentin Lessen. Have you ever seen so many flowers?! Stunning. More than we had even hoped for!! I gave a vague colour scheme (“I just want them colourful Janne. With succulents”) and could not name the flowers I wanted either. Flowers are flowers – they’re all lovely?! Janne created such stunning displays, not just for the bouquets but for the altar, the vintage gramophone on the courtyard, the tables, fresh petals for the aisle…

The Ceremony

We were played up the aisle by Sarah Howard’s beautiful acoustic guitar and rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time. Officiated by Lizzie Marriage (real name) a sweet, sincere lady who kept us grinning and giggling from ear to ear throughout the whole ceremony. Unfortunately, gale force winds seemed to magically appear for our service on a cliff top and lighting a candle/talking without shouting/keeping the carefully placed silverware on the front table were nigh impossible. It didn’t matter. If anything, it added to the occasion and the guests loved the ‘drama’ of it all. Had it not been so windy, there wouldn’t have been a dry eye there. Played out by the Kinks ‘All Day and All of the Night’, we couldn’t resist a ceremony selfie and a victory dance at the end of the aisle. The party had begun!

The Entertainment

Sarah Howard Duo played our favourite songs to perfection. This talented duo wowed everyone with everything from Mancunian Indie to present day hits. Guests enjoyed a Moroccan shisha lounge by day and partied hard to a live set mixed by DJ Shocker, under the stars.

The Food

Not only were Sana Catering personable and helpful, they served us delicious canapés all afternoon and kept the glasses full of whatever we wanted…all day and night, without us even noticing. They were like the secret service of catering – slick, efficient, unruffled and totally smooth! Sana provided an incredible feast of scallops and prawns wrapped in bacon, wild mushroom ravioli, sea bream, melt-in-the-mouth Moroccan lamb and a trio of deserts to well and truly finish us off.

We wanted to keep the cake and cupcakes simple and sweet and Costa Cake Design did this perfectly. Mixed pinks and mint greens complemented our bridal party looks and special thanks go to Kay Brady and Kat Battrick (bridesmaids) for handcrafting the very special, wooden cupcake flags and cake bunting; ‘He’s Her Lobster’. True to our travelling theme, the cakes all had secret messages handwritten in many different languages; an extra little game for the guests to figure out…

The Photography

Absolutely stunning photos by Radka and James. What a talented lady. She was so sweet and friendly, it was amazing to have her around on the morning and let her capture us as she saw fit. I put Radka in charge of everything. I didn’t even have a list of what I wanted. I prefer natural shots at the best of times and some of the priceless moments that Radka captured could not have been caught by anyone else. Thanks for giving us the best wedding gift Radka xxx

  1. Amazing wedding. I think I am in the same situation as ou with my dress. I have bought one and like it, but I’m not sure I truely love it. Eek.

    1. I know how you feel Henri, that’s exactly what happened to me! It’s a tricky one and I am probably the worst person to offer advice as I was so impulsive 🙂 it’s such a huge decision. I’d leave it for a few more weeks, have a think about what the dress isn’t fulfilling for you at the moment (shape, fit, how you feel in it) and see if that dress exists elsewhere. It might be perfect already and this is just the nerves! In the very worst case scenario, it’s surprisingly easy to sell a dress on. I sold my original dress on Sell My Wedding Dress (£20 fee) and we were both thrilled. Have a good think! xx

  2. Aaaargh no way! (Old real bride alert!) When this popped up I was all ‘Erm as in our Sally and Dave??’ (Dave was Chris’ best man) We were guests at this lovely wedding, and Chris was a groomsmen! It was such a magical day and such an honour to be there. We still have your CD in the car and it always makes us smile when it comes on (although now replaced by Disney and nursery rhymes). Thanks again for an amazing day xxx

    1. Don’t judge me too much for still looking at wedding blogs, in my defence it popped up on my Instagram (but I still do anyway, sshhh!) x

      1. Haha that explains it!! Dave looked familiar to me and I was thinking I’m sure I’ve seen that face before!! And it would have been in your wedding photos – how funny.

You’re always welcome here Tabitha, you know that!!

        Fern xx

    2. Haha I knew you’d spot this! xx We obviously had a lot of inspiration from yours and Chris’s incredible day. So….is it too soon to renew the vows?! xxx
