Richard and Marta had an effortlessly cool wedding that had quirky touches and a very personal vibe. The day was all about sharing, loving and being together. An ethos that the pair stood from the very start as they decided not to uphold the traditions of being apart until the ceremony, instead opting to get ready together – sharing every single moment of their wedding day.
Creative & Quirky
Aynhoe Park. Its the first venue we visited, so that didn’t help when we absolutely fell in love with it. It’s the most creative, crazy, quirky place you can imagine. Filled with taxidermy, amazing pieces of art and a great atmosphere.
After visiting a few others, we couldn’t take Aynhoe Park out of our minds, we just knew this would fit our style and our party, so we went for it.
I’m not really a girly girl, so I just booked a hairdresser & makeup artist through the location. I Didn’t do any trials and I didn’t have a brief other than: not too much. I didnt want to have my hair up, so I just asked on the day for something pretty.
I wore my usual perfume and got my nails done the day before at the spa at Aynhoe Park. I Went for a flashy pink on the toes and a regular bridal colour for the hands.
Simple Yet Stylish
Emily Garrod designed my dress. She is an independant designer based in Bournemouth. I met her at a vintage wedding fair in Chiswick.
I looked for dresses in “regular shops” but really didn’t enjoy the factory feeling they give you: “you are allowed to try 5 dresses on in 45 minutes, then place your order basically”
I wanted something very simple yet stylish. Plus I really dislike shopping, so having Emily make my dress was the best decision. We met every month, she helped me a lot choosing fabrics. She understood me right away and designed exactly what I wanted (even though I only knew what I didnt want at the time). I cannot recommend her enough.
Comfort & Style
My shoes were wedges from LK Bennett. I was going for flats to start with, but I found the good compromise between comfort and style. I changed shoes in the evening and had sparkly ballerines.
The only jewellery I wore was a family necklace my mum gave me. It belonged to my great grand mother. A beautiful silver necklace shaped in flowers; and of course my engagement ring.
No Theme or Scheme
We each had 3 witnesses and they wore exactly what they wanted. We didnt go for a coulour theme or a “uniform”. We just wanted to keep everything natural and simple to contrast with the madness of the place. Aynhoe Par already provides the best in terms of decorations, we could pick and choose what we preferred in their art collection. They made sure it was on there for the weekend.
The food was a big focus with food stations outside during the afternoon cocktail, drinks in wheel barrows. There was a sweet corner for the kids.
Mum’s The Word
We asked our mothers to take care of the flowers. They love it, and we dont really have a taste for what should be a good flower style. They picked and chose what they thought would be the best after having seen the location. We didnt even check, we discovered it all during the day and it was perfect. Once again, it didnt need many flowers, just a few vases at the ceremony and a few low flowers arrangements on the dinner tables.
My mother also made my bouquet with pretty simple wild flowers. They did a perfect job! It was noticed, yet not predominant.
A Beautiful Ceremomy
The civil ceremony was very emotional and a great moment. I thank the registrar for giving the advice to enjoy it as it goes very fast (I did remember it half way through).
The room was set up in a way so everyone could see the action. Not it rows, but more in a kind of open circle.
Richard’s mum read a beautiful text in english and my sister did read a poem in french. Richards witness, who was responsible for the rings put on a very fun captain hat when it was time to get the rings. That gave a good laugh to everyone!
We chose our music as well for the entrance, the signature and the exit, but overwhelmed by the emotion, we didnt even notice it!
It was a beautiful ceremony, and we are very happy we chose to do it this way.
After the ceremony, we had an afternoon garden party & cocktail with the Speakeasy Jazz Band playing, games of petanque, croquet and grasshoppers.
It was a true fun garden party till the storm arrived. Again a good laugh, and we just continued inside.
Speeches were made during the afternoon cocktails as well.
After the cocktail, we had dinner, then DJ Spencer Mac started the music that went on till the small hours of the morning
Months In Preparation
Food is our biggest passion and we happen to work in the industry as well, so we tailored everything with fantastic chefs we work with.
We spent months preparing menus with our favourite ingredients, cakes, drink selections and wine matching. The result was fantastic, the chefs did the best job ever, everyone was delighted with the food. There was no cake cutting, but a beautiful table of small and big cakes.
Food was a central part of the weekend with an outstanding fine dining intimate dinner on friday night, a light lunch of smoothies, scones and sandwiches on saturday, nibbles and cocktail food all afternoon, a 4 course dinner on saturday night, a cake table, a midnight smnack of hotdogs, sunday brunch and a pizza van for sunday night ..lots of food!
A friend of ours helped us design the invitations that we printed ourselves. The table plan was actually quite easy as it was a small wedding with only 75 guests.
Richards mum did the beautiful place names for friday night.
We did the ones for saturday with polaroid pictures of our friends with one of us, stuck on a wine cork. At the back we had written 3 interesting facts about the person to get conversations started if needed (it wasnt needed but it was so much fun!)
It was an amazing weekend, I wish we could do it again!
My advice would be just relax, its all going to be fine, people you love are here to witness your love. We really felt the love with our friends and family. One thing we decided not to do is hide from each other before the ceremony, we needed each others support to calm our nerves, and we loved hanging out together whilst getting ready.
We had a very small wedding and I wouldn’t to do it any other way as we got to spend time with everyone. It Didn’t feel like it went too fast.
Moreover, do whatever you want, its your day, and theres only one day like that… And definitely the best investment we made was We Heart Pictures our photographers who created memories for life!
It’s probably a lot of little girls dreams to have a Unicorn at your wedding… Maybe not a stuffed one hanging off the wall but Richard and Marta’s wedding was different from the norm in quite a few ways really. And that’s what it’s all about people!! Your Day Your Way and all that!
A gorgeous set of images from We Heart Pictures will keep the memories of this alternative and undeniably stylish wedding as fresh as a stuffed grizzly bear for years to come!
