Style Me Pretty Closing – The Original Wedding Blog

When news broke of the imminent closure of Style Me Pretty myself and the team were both shocked and saddened. It’s not for us to speculate publicly the reasons behind the decision, becoming part of a corporate giant such as Oath following various purchases and mergers by the likes of Verizon, Yahoo and AOL (who purchased SMP back in 2012) means that Style Me Pretty would constantly be under scrutiny with regards their profitability, with continual comparisons to all of the other media platforms owned by Verizon.

One thing I can say for sure is if it wasn’t for Style Me Pretty, Rock My Wedding would not exist.

I remember quite clearly discovering what is most definitely the worlds most popular wedding blog, when I was planning my own big day back in 2008, nearly a whole decade ago. I thought it was amazing. A website full of planning advice and tips, beautiful wedding dresses and vendors that were the very best the industry had to offer.

I was inspired. So much so that by the time I was married a year later, I had made up my mind that I would endeavour to create a similar concept for the UK, a wedding blog dedicated to inspiration with community at it’s core and a supplier directory full of the most talented and forward thinking photographers, florists, videographers, venues, designers, creatives and makers in the United Kingdom.

The online landscape is constantly evolving, it can be exciting and awe inspiring, it can also be exhausting and incredibly cut-throat. As a brand we endeavour to do our very best to engage our readers, to offer useful and unique idea-led content to our loyal community of brides and grooms. If I’ve learnt anything in the last ten years it’s that you can never rest on your laurels or on the “perception” of how successful your company is. You have to keep building. You have to keep investing. You have to embrace change and ultimately, you have to believe in yourself, your team and your ability to satisfy your ever changing audience requirements.

Style Me Pretty Closing

Style Me Pretty was and always will be a global success, 18 million page views per month and hundreds of real wedding submissions every week, I can’t begin to imagine what founder Abby Larson (who actually stepped back from SMP in May 2017) must feel receiving the news that the site will shut down at the end of this month. Irrespective of her decision to leave the brand she created, she will always be a pioneering entrepreneur and she must be immensely proud of all she achieved with her team, inspiring brides all over the world and paving the way for so many of us to have the confidence to follow our dreams of becoming successful business owners.

A Note From Lauren, Operations Director, RMLtd

After I chose my bridesmaid’s dresses in a flattering shade of dark blue, I was looking for an accent colour to combine into my wedding colour scheme. In 2010, weddings with maids in blue seemed to take on a nautical theme which wasn’t the look I was after. I was a daily reader of Style Me Pretty and was over the moon when I found a blush and blueberry styled inspiration shoot which became the whole basis of my wedding palette, right down to the burlap table runners and viburnum berries in my bouquet.

If It wasn’t for Style Me Pretty I doubt I would have developed such an insatiable appetite for wedding blogs which led me to discovering Rock My Wedding. I am shocked and saddened that brides have lost just a valuable source of inspiration.

A Note From Laura, Supplier Development Manager, RMLtd

I am hugely saddened by the closing of SMP from the wedding world. Style Me Pretty was an integral part of my own wedding planning journey, and I can’t imagine many brides who wouldn’t be inspired by the amazing content on the site. I felt quite overwhelmed and restricted in our own wedding plans until I found blogs like Style Me Pretty, then it suddenly felt like anything was possible. Our DIY dream day definitely wouldn’t have come to fruition without Style Me Pretty, as it gave me heaps of confidence in our outside the box ideas. At the time the inspiration that could be found there was unlike anything else, and it was beyond exciting seeing the influence this had on the explosion of British wedding blogs.

A Note From Fern, RMW Editor, RMLtd

Style Me Pretty truly changed the way people plan their weddings, it was at the forefront in shaking up a dated industry and helped shape the stylish, creative and exciting industry we know today. It has always been my go-to for finding inspiration and SMP led the way in mood boarding well before Pinterest came along. We’ll greatly miss the resource as it’s been so monumental in why we’re here today doing what we do.

Style Me Pretty will be online until the end of April, so please do enjoy the gorgeous, inspirational content while you can. All weddings & shoots in this feature originally appeared on SMP – for credits please click the image.

  1. There is no denying what a beautiful blog Style Me Pretty has always been. Full of high quality imagery and content, gracing its pages as a wedding photographer was a delightful highlight.
