Summer & Robin: The Spray Tan Suggestion

OMG! How is it June already? My son turned four years old a couple of days ago and I’m still getting over the sheer amount of sausage rolls and ice cream I consumed #mumhangover.

This month we finally got to visit Court Farm again. I have been stressing out to the max since November because the new owners of the farm had done a ton of building work and pretty much changed EVERYTHING. Yikes!! The work is finally finished and the new accommodation, although not what we originally wanted, is lovely. I honestly don’t want to go too much into it because I still feel a bit sad that what we originally put our deposit down for isn’t what we are getting anymore. If this had been my first visit to the farm I know I would have been completely smitten with the new building work, but if I’m honest I liked the rooms we originally booked more. I keep telling myself to stop being silly though because it is gorgeous and I absolutely can’t wait to get married there. We had only ever seen the farm in person in the rain, but last week with the sun shining it was so perfect out by the barn. I know I’m totally jinxing myself but I can’t help it…I wish wish wish for a sunny wedding day!

When I walked into the barn I was instantly struck with how much bigger it seemed than in my memory. Secondly, I was struck with how many more decorations I need to make. I have subsequently been crafting my self silly. The tip of one of my fingers has gone completely numb after excessive craft knife usage, and don’t even get me started on glue gun burns. That being said, my decorations are pretty good if I do say so myself. So far I have around a third of the decorations finished (this only includes hanging decs though, I haven’t even thought about place cards are table plans or signage yet). I have seven pajakis hanging in various rooms of my house. The pajakis have been the most fun to make and I LOVE them. I have no idea what I’m going to do with all of them when the wedding is over (I still want to make about twice as many) I know a couple of friends have asked me if they can have one after and I definitely want to keep a couple. I might stick the rest of them on Etsy. What do people usually do with all their wedding stuff once the party is over?

My wedding dress still needs to be taken up an inch or two and I’ve been putting it off because I’m so scared that somebody could mess it up. If any of you live around Bath and know a very trustworthy seamstress or tailor please let me know. I have spent too long reading reviews online and feeling scared about whom to choose. Other than this minor alteration my outfit is all sorted and has been for sometime, but I do have one item I can’t decide on. In the past few months I have tried, swatched and bought more lipsticks than the rest of my life all together. Although I wear make up almost everyday and love it, I have never been a lipstick girl. I didn’t think it would be this hard to get it right. During my long and in depth research I have narrowed my search down to darkish red tints or stains. Something that I can kiss my husband with all day and night without getting it all over him, but I also want something that isn’t completely dry. Dry lips are so yuck. This struggle is so real; I can’t pass by a department store without covering the back of my hand in a rainbow of red swatches.

Our invites are out now so I can finally show you all the designs. Our most excellent best man and lady, Ed and Flo, created them for us and we love them dearly for their mad skills.

And finally, now the sun is attempting to shine I have a slight baseball boot/sock tan line issue. I walk a lot and I pretty much always wear converse because they are comfy. Unless I wear long trousers or tights all summer I am going to have a terrible tan line for the wedding. Robin suggested I get a spray tan (which almost made me choke on my dinner – Robin is definitely not the type of person to just come out with a suggestion like that). How do other people deal with tan lines on their wedding day? Thankfully my dress isn’t strapless. Does a spray tan cover all the lines or just make darker bits darker. I have never had a spray tan but a dark (brown) part of me kinda likes the idea. What’s happening to me, the bride is taking over! This could be like black swan you guys…except I’ll start covering everything in diamantes and hopefully not becoming a homicidal manic (no promises – send your RSVPs back people).

  1. hey summer, that barn looks amazing and with all your decorations will look lovely on your day. I went to Bath for the first time last weekend to meet our wedding photographer it was such a beautiful place. Bourjois do an amazing range of lipstick that stays on called rouge velvet, I usually use that then pop some vasaline over the top to keep them from looking dry plus it doesnt come off on other people which is good :-). I’m having a spray tan (really just using the wedding as an excuse to get lots of well earned pampering done) i’m pretty fair so i’ll just have the lightest one, best to get in done a couple or 1 day before the event as it comes off quite a lot initially (sleep on a towel unless you like brown sheets) x

    1. Great advice. How long does it turn sheets brown for? I wouldn’t want to stain all the sheets at the reception venue (or set out a towel to lay myself down on on my wedding night, haha.) I feel like I must have already seen the bourjois reds, I can vaguely remember really liking one of the shades but for some reason never actually bought it. I’ll have to revisit them, thanks! xxx

  2. it washes off no problem when I had one done for my bro’s wedding a few years ago it shocked the life out of me looked like I had been mud wrestling!!! yeah they come in a little tube looks a bit like a lip gloss from the bottle 🙂

      1. I’m already youtubing reviews of lipsticks. I can’t think why I didn’t buy one in the first place, I must have been in a rush to get to work or something.

  3. Your wedding will be amazing don’t worry! I wish I had more time to craft, mine is a month today (*freaking out*). Definitely agree about the spray tan, go for it! I had a test run recently and just went for the lightest one, to take the edge of my white-ness and not blind people rather than look like I’ve been in Barbados for 2 weeks. I’m getting mine done on Thurs for the wedding on Sat. Brown sheets are only on the first night while the tan is still developing, then you wash it off in the morning and voila! I would definitely recommend having a trial run first so that you’re happy with the shade on your skin. x

    1. Thanks, I feel weird about having a spray tan because I’m not very very fair. But i’m totally up for it (actually the more I think about it the more enthusiastic I feel about it) I will start having a look for a salon in Bath to try one out.

  4. Hello there 🙂 Just a quick message about spray tans. Apologies if everyone’s beat me to it! I am fair and had my first ‘wedding tan trial’ a couple of weeks ago (getting married in August). I thought I would hate it, I’m blonde and didn’t want to look like Barbie! But I ended up loving it. I went for one layer of the St Tropez tan, had it done early morning and washed it off before bed that evening (as suggested by friends). I didn’t get any on the bed sheets and it was pretty flawless (I didn’t exfoliate a lot the day before and made sure I moisturised after showering). My only regret was having my hands done – next time I will ask her not to spray my hands and I will do those with some gradual Dove tanning moisturiser. I think as my hands can be quite dry the tan tool too well and I don’t want to look like I’ve got orange gloves! Anyway I’m now converted and will be having one for my hen do soon! The tan lasted about ten days before I started to get fading patches. Hope that’s helpful x x x

      1. Excellent advise, thanks so much. What are you doing about waxing? If you’re planning a last minute wax before the wedding are you going before or after? Will a fresh(ish) wax get irritated by a tan? I’m such a novice tanner lol I haven’t got a clue.

            1. I’m getting my eyebrows tattooed tomorrow which I can’t decide is a good idea or crazy idea…. wish me luck lol x

              1. Omg good luck. I have never looked into that. Is it a semi permanent thing or a proper permanent thing. I’d love to know how it goes 🙂

                1. OMG I love my eyebrows btw so glad I had them done, I think I’m going to make it something I keep forever, and I don’t look mental they just look like my real eyebrows 🙂

  5. Hi Summer,
I love reading about your wedding preparations and the decorations look lovely!
I’m a bit of a veteran “on the weekend” tanner as I do a lot of Latin American dancing… If going for a spray tan I would definitely recommend using Sienna X. It doesn’t smell *too* biscuity and it’s more caramel than tango.
I usually go for a “competition tan” but they do a range of DHA concentrations starting at fair, and it’s the best one I’ve used. It comes off evenly too.
Whatever you go for, I’d definitely recommend having a trial run :). It’s always worth sleeping in your tan too as the relaxation helps your tan develop more evenly!
Hope this is useful. Good luck! X

  6. Hi there, if the bourjois lipstick doesn’t work out I can recommended lipstick queen in Medieval – love it! All the best with everything!

  7. City taylors who are based on Milsom street are really good. Both my dad and other half have had their suits altered there for our wedding next week. http://www.citytailors.co.uk/ I completely feel your pain about spray tans! I have been having the same problem about deciding too … I have even tried the new St Tropez in shower self tan which actually worked quite well!
    Good Luck!

  8. Oooh thanks. I’ll look them up. I haven’t looked into home tan products but I might have find out a little more about what’s available. Good luck for next week! Are you getting married in Bath?

  9. If your after a good lipstick and want something just to accentuate your natural lips I’d recommend the Rimmel Exaggerate lip liner in Addiction/016. Its amazing! I use it everyday just to enhance my natural lip colour and line and fill my lips with it. If your after a proper red Rimmel Lasting Finish – black tulip is pretty too. I always find lip liners stay on loads longer so you don’t have to worry about reapplying all day.
If your planning on a spray tan give yourself a real good exfoliation and definitely trail it first! 🙂

  10. Hi Summer! I’m getting married in Court Farm next year so avidly await your blogs! I love the little curtain that’s on the barn now. I am still hoping the new owners put doors on the barn to use in case of emergency (i.e. very heavy rain!) We aren’t having a marquee – just dinner and dancing in the barn y’see.
I also have a seamstress in Bath – I don’t know how to PM on here? Is it possible? If so I will send you over her details 🙂
    Emily xx
p.s. Loving the invites. They look fabulous!
