Well this is just pure unadulterated destination wedding perfection! Seriously people – this is how to wed in style!! Suzanne and Jakob held their nuptials in Italy at the incredibly beautiful Lake Como, which has been a popular retreat for aristocrats and wealthy people since Roman times. Can you imagine some of the escapades that have happened there?!
Suzanne and Jakob’s wedding added to the history of glamorous shindigs, with a stunning vintage Priscilla of Boston gown (the designer of Grace Kelly’s wedding gown no less), an outdoor ceremony with mountains as a backdrop, a trip out on the lake in a speed boat and a raucous party full of crazy Danish and Egyptian traditions.
Enjoy the escapism lovelies and if any of you are getting married at Lake Como – I’m very jealous. It looks amazing!
I was never a child who knew the wedding dress of their dreams. And so it was through a little web research of possible stores that started the trail. I visited one other store and even discussed the possibility of modifying my mother’s wedding dress with a designer before stumbling upon Heavenly Vintage.
Helena invited my Maid of Honour and I into her house and up to her beautifully styled Dressing Room. Categorised by era each dress was maticulously kept. The dress I chose was designed by Priscilla of Boston who also designed Grace Kelly’s dress. It really fit me like a glove and felt incredible on. Both classic but stylish I was happy with the decision and couldn’t believe I had chosen a dress with long sleeves, a high neck and a long trail for an Italian wedding!
Jakob wore a blue three piece Paul Smith suit with crisp white shirt, a multi coloured striped bow tie from Chester Barrie at Harvey Nichols, a red with a blue trim pocket square from Duchamp, yellow socks with fox illustration by Pink and tan brown classic leather shoes by Church’s.
This caused the most debate. Growing up in England, but of Irish and Egyptian blood marrying a Dane we weren’t sure where would be the best neutral ground. Luckily through working with Taimar she suggested that her Mum Rachel might be able to help out with a wedding on Lake Como. After several phone calls and emails her venue suggestions really matched the mood we were hoping for. Beautiful setting and relaxed with of course good food. So we chose Villa Carlotta for our wedding ceremony which was held on the terrace of this beautiful 19th villa overlooking Lake Como then the reception was at Lido di Lenno, with aperitivo on the lawn, the meal in the marquee and dancing in the bar, swimming from their beach!
Both being architects this was an important part to us once we have decided on the setting. We created our stationery – we decided on a mix of handwritten typeface and hand sketches of the venue.
Colour was important to us we wanted a background of regional produce materials and natural colours, olive green and fig purple with the florists bouquets being the colour accent.
This sat well against the crisp white long table settings in the white marquee.
Jakob and I developed a few pages of concept design ideas for the decorations and these were then designed by the Lake Como Wedding Planner & Carlotta Fenini.
We included Danish traditions of
– pounding of feet under the table (means the Bride and groom have to kiss)
– tapping of the glass equals a kiss by the bride and groom
– when the Groom leaves the dining area all the men queue up to give the Bride a kiss and vice versa!
– Jakob’s family re-inacted with costumes some popular sailor songs from their 60s. Inviting all the reception to join in thanks to printed song sheets!
And Egyptian traditions of
– traditional music came on after the first dance of the Danish waltz
– this brought all the belly dancing out from the shy crowd!
