Mahj and Martin…

My first name is Mahjabeen (Mahj for short) and Martin’s name is, erm, Martin! We are getting married on the 22nd July 2011 at Mottram Hall in Cheshire and both live in Stockport (just outside of Manchester).

I would say that mine and my intended’s wedding would fall under the ‘vintage inspired’ and ‘other’ category. Because I am Pakistani and my very lovely fiancé is English, we are attempting to achieve that wedding wonderment: a fusion wedding! Think English country garden meets Bollywood and your halfway there. Fresh, vintage blooms and birdcages, contrasted with striking, bright and bold sari material as the table cloths is one of the many ideas we have had so far. Plus oodles of dancing, bad singing and lurve!

In all seriousness though, striking that balance is hard. What Mr B’s Catholic-love-a-good-tipple family may enjoy, my quite-conservative-non drinking-practising Muslim family may not. But we think we are getting there…maybe….

With just under a year to go, we have suddenly become hyper aware that come next year, 150+ members of our families and friends will be descending upon Manchester and until then, we have a helluva lot of work to do! Eeeeeep!

The latest dilemmas faced are honeymoon destination, finding the perfect fusion bridesmaid outfit x 3, deciding on wedding favours that wont offend the non-drinking attendees (I loved the idea of miniature bottles of booze for everyone – till I realised that Great Auntie Ansari wouldn’t!) and so very much more. And that’s just the wedding day, there is also the Henna Party to contend with. Think I may start hyperventilating shortly…

All joking aside, I truly, madly, deeply j’adore RMW. I check it every morning to give my eyes a wedding treat and whomever the lucky ladies are that get picked to be the next Jenny’s will be very lucky ladies indeed. And I shall love reading their escapades just as much.

And I think thats everything…

Take care,
Mahj xx

  1. VOTE! Similar to what I’m hoping to pull off in a few weeks time! Sounds fabulous and I love your writing style 🙂 xx

  2. VOTE

I love that you are trying to embrace both cultures and find it really inspiring for my own wedding as I am also Asian and my fiance is not!
    Good luck!

  3. VOTE! I love the idea of the sari material contrasted with the blooms. Totally agree about the writing style too – I want to read more now!

  4. V to the O to the T to the E, (er, that’s VOTE), reading about this one would seriously rock my…life? I’m not usually a fan of the english country garden style shenanigan (unless they involve a cocunut shy), BUT this one sounds sexy and gorgeous and hilariously written x

  5. VOTE!!

I hope you win as it would be refreshing to see your ‘fusion’ plans unfolding!

What we need is something different, a break from the norm would be great!

    Good luck

  6. VOTE VOTE VOTE!! And as for fusion outfits, chose a fab bright color/print and have the bridesmaids in full saris, the boys in traditional morning suits with matching said bright color cravattes etc and then the bride in traditional western white with full henna hands etc. Best of both 🙂

    But VOTE VOTE VOTE 🙂

  7. Vote Vote Vote. I’ve never posted before but I love Rock My Wedding and think it will be amazing to feature a wedding that’s a little bit different. I’ve seen so few non tradition British weddings featured on line. This one sounds lush.

  8. Vote – I ‘recognise’ Mahj as a regular commenter.
Vote – ‘lurve’ is mentioned as a key part of the day.
Vote – I would love to read about the Henna party.
Vote – for a fusion wedding.

  9. Vote, Loving the mix of traditional design/asian colours and fabrics. I think it will be really interesting to see how they manage to find something for everyone at a catholic/muslim, drinkers/teetotal wedding !

  10. *Vote*!! I love Mahj’s writing style and sounds like this wedding could be a real challenge to organise. I love the sound of it already. And we do love different here on RMW 😉

  11. Vote- anyone mixing Bollywood with vintagey English needs a pat on the back! This will be SO different to anything else- well done Mahj!

  12. Ladies, you lot are making my life! Thank you all so much for your lovely comments, I’m feeling very overwhelmed by all the lurve and votes!

Peridot – have no idea where the green shoes are from, I found them on a random Google search but I am hoping (desperately) to find something similar (for a v.specific reason) to wear at my wedding. They are proving quite elusive though.

Charlotte and another girlie that asked before – of course you may come, if only for the food!!

Thanks again ladies, I’m really quite touched 🙂

    xxxx

  13. To me this is what RMW should be about. It sounds so different and so much fun. The others all sound wonderful but not as unique or different as this one. VOTE!

  14. Vote. It would be amazing to see a wedding in a culture different to mine and the joining of the two I think will be amazing.
    So
    VOTE VOTE VOTE

  15. VOTE!!!

Come on RMW – this is one of the most original weddings we will get a chance to see, it’s got to win this category!

Ladies – we need more votes!

    xx
