Under The Sea.

Mermaid-Inspiration-Cover

This is Lolly’s most requested song at RMW HQ, I think she knows all the words and everything.

I could fib at this point and say I only like it for nostalgic reasons. But I won’t. I like it because a small part of me still wants to be believe that mermaids actually exist. And what the ruddy hell was Ariel thinking when she wanted to leave all of that underwater fantasy and treasure chests full of tiaras to go live on dry land?!

That Prince must have been hot.

It’s unusual for me to put together the initial inspiration post but out of all the shoots we’ve ever styled, this was the one I was the most looking forward to – and the most challenging, I could see it so clearly in my head and anything less than 100% perfect wasn’t going to be good enough.

As much as I appreciate the generic adoration of the sugar-coated Disney version of life underwater it’s actually the more ethereal, dreamy aesthetic that appeals. When I think mermaid I think sequins, I think cool metallics and long wavy windswept locks. I think statement jewels, sun-kissed skin and a soft muted colour palette.

I also think very VERY sexy. Not in an obvious look-at-my-teeny-weeny-shell-bikini type way, more of a flash of shoulder, flutter of lash, As-soon-as-I’ve-got-legs-I’m-going-to-get-up-to-no-good-with-a-delicious-human type way….. You know?

I clearly like to make very complicated specifications for the team. It’s a good job I know they can handle it.

If any of you have ever visited the beach at Camber Sands near Rye then you will know it offers the perfect backdrop for fairytale frolics. All long grass, crashing waves and storybook sand dunes. The folks at Love lust List rated venue The Gallivant very kindly let us pretty much take over the hotel (!) for three days whilst we put together our most ambitious editorial to date.

In terms of decor and florals you will have to wait for Lolly’s extravaganza tomorrow, what I can tell you is it was important for everything to be very organic and informal whilst remaining uber beautiful. There is an abundance of lush greenery. And there are lots of urchin-esque blooms.

From a fashion perspective it was all about finding delicate embroidery, shimmering fabrics and sea maiden shapes. There was always going to be fishtail. And there was also going to be a fair amount of the aforementioned sun kissed skin on show.

Unlike our previous editorial efforts we’ve also introduced a bit of a love story element. As per usual Lolly and I had the very difficult task of choosing a suitable male model to ensure everything ended with a Happy Ever After. We sincerely hope you lovelies will think all of our hard work was worth it.

For the make-up palette I wanted shine, glow, smudgy bronzes and a natural touch-me complexion. Two parts Gisele Bundchen one part Leona Lewis in the Bleeding Love music video. Needless to say our model Chantelle looked amazing. We’ll be sure to let you know what products were used.

Have you ever dreamed about being a mermaid?

Ever considered making W-day into a glamorous yet contemporary underwater world?

If you answered yes to either of the above then we’re pretty sure you’ll like what we’ve got to share.

  1. The Little Mermaid was one of my favourite films as a little girl. The timing of this feature is so funny, because on TV here in Houston at the moment they keep running adverts for the re-released My Little Mermaid DVD….which means that I permanently have the song ‘Under the Sea’ stuck in my head!!! But this take is soooo interesting! I love the sexiness of it all. It all reminds of the Chris Isaak ‘Wicked Games’ video. Have you seen it?? If not GO GOOGLE IT!!! It’s like one of those sexiness mermaids just found her legs. 🙂 xxx

    1. Sophie – Oh MY ACTUAL GOD. That is like my most favourite music video of all time. In my dancing days it was the song we did the rhumba to – my favourite Latin American number.

I just thought Helena was the most beautiful woman on earth. Still kind of do!

  2. Oh Helena Christensen was a total goddess!

Excited that sexy mermaid week is upon us. In the words of Ariel ‘I wish I could be, part of that world’ (ie rolling round in the sand looking windswept in a fabulous dress and a crown made of samphire) xx

    1. One of my best girls met her and interviewed her at her actual house (Helena not Ariel) in real life. Apparently her skin is like flawless golden amazingness.

      I was so jealous.

  3. What a wonderful idea. I can’t wait for tomorrow. I always wanted to be a little mermaid and it was my absolutely favourite film! Funny enough, I just watched it last week together with my husband on our new 3D TV

    1. Where did the rest of my post go? I wrote that I can’t wait to see your shoot tomorrow and go singing to myself: “look at this stuff, isn’t it neat, wouldn’t you think my collection’s complete!
Oh and I just watched the music video and darn she’s the hot adult version of Ariel!

  4. My little mermaid was my fave princess and the husband just bought me it for our recent hol! Took me right back!
I am beside myself with excitement if those make up pics are anything to go by! I have just had a bit of a skin care make up splurge and I can feel another one coming along… 🙂
    Xx

  5. Ok I may not be obsessing as much as some of you over the song and film but I am obsessing at over how god damn sexy these images are – I want mermaid hair! My hair is fairly fine however I’ve always dreamt of that beach looking wavy hair and these girls have it.

My second love from this feature is the make up. I’m make up obsessed at the moment, blogs, tutorials, generally hanging out in beauty halls I just cannot get enough. I’m doing my own make up for the big day as I’m a trained skin therapist and have spent many years doing other peoples bridal make up so really want to do my own, so please please please share the products love ladies…

    Xxx

    1. Oooh a trained skin therapist! this is very exciting. My hair is also very fine so I swear by mousse, every single time I wash. I also find plaits whilst damp leave it lovely and wavy.

Definitely sharing the products – As per above I’ve already splurged (!)

  6. I had a quick glance at this post earlier and have been humming ‘under the sea’ ever since. I absolutely love Camber Sands and everything seaside related so I cannot blooming wait to see the shoot. Something tells me it is going to be magical 🙂 xx

  7. Gorgeous! Can’t wait to see the full post! We’re getting married at the Gallivant next year and we pretty much have everything in place – I’m now worried I’ll be tempted to scrap all previous ideas and go ‘under the sea’ with a shimmering mermaid look!!! xx
