FAQS
Why include dried flowers in my wedding?
I suppose like a lot of things it’s a matter of style and taste, but speaking for myself, I just adore the laid-back personality and subtle, shabby beauty of dried flowers. Early on in my floristry career I was on the usual track of working with fresh flowers, doing shop work and wedding and event floristry. But when I first used dried flowers to make a hand-tied bouquet I fell a bit in love. I was swept off my feet by their natural shabbiness and their gorgeously muted colours. They have that dishevelled-cool personality that some lucky people can pull off. They also have some very practical virtues. They last for years with just a small amount of care, they are re-useable (which also makes them eco-friendly and versatile), they are lightweight, and they don’t wilt in the heat so they’re true party stalwarts in a warm marquee or on a steamy dance floor.
Why wear dried flower accessories for my wedding?
There are so many reasons to wear dried flower accessories on your wedding day! Firstly, if you're aiming for a relaxed, country or boho style, finishing your outfit with a dried flower crown achieves that for you almost single-handedly. Secondly, because dried flowers last for years, dried flower crowns and buttonholes can be kept as lasting keepsakes of your wedding day. They can also be used and worn again and again for other events, including for your own future anniversary celebrations. In the same way mothers pass down veils, dresses and rings to their daughters and sons, wedding accessories made from dried flowers can be saved to be worn by future generations. You can create new family heirlooms by keeping and passing down to your children to treasure and wear for the important occasions of their own lives. And not forgetting that dried flower wedding accessories are utterly perfect if you’re planning a destination wedding. They can be packed safely in a suitcase without adding weight to your luggage, survive the journey and revel in the heat. So you can add your floral finishing touches without the uncertainty of local florists or the worry of wilting blooms under the glare of the sun.
How do I wear and care for dried flower accessories?
All Mary Elizabeth Flowers crowns fit all heads. They are easily adjustable using the ribbon at the back. Simply tighten and slacken until the crown feels snug and comfortable then tie off with a simple shoelace bow, allowing the tails of the bow to flow carefree down the back of your hair. The ribbon can be cut to size using sharp fabric scissors if you have shorter hair and you don’t want the ribbon tails to overshoot it. (Cutting at an angle gives a nice finish.) The dried flower buttonholes have an integral brooch pin for easy attachment to a lapel. Compared to fresh cut flowers, dried flowers have a laid-back, ‘low-maintenance’ personality. They are the Phoebe to fresh flowers’ Monica. Having said that, laid-back is one thing but no one likes a doormat. They do have certain standards and expectations. All a dried-flower asks of you are three things – don’t let them get wet, don’t keep them in direct sunlight (unless you don’t mind them losing their colour) and don’t be unduly rough with them (they’re laid-back but they’re not invincible) – and they will continue to serve you for years.
