A Silver Sensation… Part 1

Today we are sharing a wedding that encompasses so many different styles I struggled to classify it. No bad thing though as it clearly suited the couple involved down to the ground and I love how clear Victoria was about all her ideas that came together in such a distinctive unique way. All the fresh images are by Jon from S6 Photography

Victoria and Andrew were married on 18th September 2010 at Kenwood Hall, Sheffield, in the Old House part of the hotel.

A Silver Sensation

I went to the Wedding Show at Birmingham NEC. I went knowing exactly what I wanted but having looked at row upon row of big white net or satin dresses I knew I wasn’t going to find it.

I’m really picky with clothes, I know what I like but often can never find it so the thought crossed my mind to get one made. At the NEC I came across a tiny stall in comparison to the others which was predominantly for bridesmaid dresses. At the front of the stall was a dress which stopped me in my tracks, I loved the top but hated the bottom, didn’t like the material or the colour but thought I would just ask.

The stall was owned by a lady called Sherry who had a shop in Newcastle under Lyne called Fairytales by Sherry. When I spoke to her I knew she would be able to do exactly what I wanted, you could see the excitement of what she was about to make. I gathered different pictures of parts of dresses I’d like to be incorporated, I chose the fabric, the colour and the overall design and Sherry with her amazing skill pulled it altogether.
The dress was amazing, different to anyone else as I’d chosen every part of it, I would never have loved an off the hanger dress where as this dress is what every little girl dreams of.

Since the wedding people have seen the photos of the dress and asked me who designed it, I nearly burst with excitement when they asked and I could say ‘me’.

Accessory Love

Having had a Nannan obsessed with accessories I learnt the beauty of sparkly things from an early age. She had beautiful pieces of jewellery but something that always caught my eye was all her marcasite.

As my Nannan is no longer with us I wanted part of her there on the day and thought of no better way of remembering her than with something she loved. My necklace was antique marcasite and mother of pearl and was bought from an amazing shop called Hirst Antiques in Notting Hill. I stood at the window of the shop with my face pressed up against it and I just fell immediately in love with it. Andrew pushed for me to go try it on and as soon as I did I just thought ‘mine’.

To complement this I had tiny marcasite earrings but also wanted something for my hair. I had wanted something marcasite again and scoured the internet for something appropriate but couldn’t find a thing. Then one Saturday I was in my home town of Leeds and remembered about a beautiful antique shop called Aladdin’s Cave and thought I’d have a look. They didn’t have any hair accessories but I was shown two little marcasite clips. I think originally they were made to clip on clothes as had a hinged clip like clip on earrings. They were gorgeous and worked perfectly with everything else.

Along with these as a surprise on the day of the wedding Andrew had a gorgeous marcasite bracelet watch delivered to me. It finished me off perfectly.

Shoes and Something Blue

When I was trying on wedding dresses they kept giving me satin square toed shoes and I immediately knew that I wasn’t going to wear the normal wedding shoes.

The colour of dress I had chosen was silver and for months I had been looked at a pair of Vivienne Westwood ‘Dragon’ shoes which incidentally were in a pale grey. The best excuse I thought, shoes I love that also work for the wedding. Not only this but they had a blue heart on the front so there was my something blue sorted.

A Messy Side ‘do

I used my regular hairdresser, Holly, to do my hair. I trust her completely and know that she’s on the same wave length to me. I described what I wanted and she did exactly that. I didn’t want something too perfect and sculptured as that just isn’t me. I went for an ‘up do’ with my hair pulled to the side and then pinned in messy curls. She did all three bridesmaids too and made them look stunning.

For the makeup I met Simone at a wedding fair at Magna in Rotherham. When I looked at her portfolio I knew she would make us all look our best. I wanted fairly natural make up with a bit of drama on the eyes so I went for 60’s style eyeliner with neutral face and eye shadow. She made me look flawless.

Saving Money and the day

We bought everything for the wedding, nothing was hired. I started off with one bridesmaid due to the cost of dresses, I was thinking I would be paying around £300 for one dress and thought there would be no way of affording any more than that on top of everything else.

Then, we were in Debenhams of all places and I saw what they were selling as a wedding dress but what I thought would make a lovely bridesmaid dress and it was £100. The dress was called Ivory Corsage Dress and was a long, straight but flowing dress with one shoulder strap that had corsage flowers going over it. I showed it to Jess, my bridesmaid, and she loved it.
After seeing this and loving the dress and the price I thought I could now ask another friend, Grace, to be bridesmaid. I think I made her day as she sobbed whilst saying ‘yes, I will’.

The third bridesmaid was Andrew’s cousin, also called Grace but she was only two and a half. In Debenhams they had a child’s version of the dress I had chosen that was adorable. She is an amazingly beautiful little girl and probably the most perfect flower girl you could ever imagine. The pictures of her completely warm your heart.

Suited and Booted

Neither of us liked the normal wedding attire of tail coats, top hats etc and I’ve always been drawn towards waistcoats on men so it went without saying that Andrew chose a three piece suit. It was from Next and fitted him perfectly.
His shirt was a high collared and from Zara and his tie was Vivienne Westwood.

He looked gorgeous on our wedding day, when I saw his big smile as I walked down the aisle I just thought all my dreams had come true. Later in the evening he took his jacket off and just wore the waistcoat, he’s is definitely the man for me, I just kept looking at him and thinking how lucky I am.

Loving the funky take on a classic gown and the very fresh photography from S6.

Are any of you planning on having a non-white wedding dress?

Yours Truly,

Rebecca
xoxo

Mahj, I have now added “photo of being groped by Mum while being squeezed in to dress” to the top of my list. It’s brilliant, and it has to be what the bride’s laughing at. The complete ridiculousness that we go through on our wedding day and think nothing of it!

I’m going for a blue wedding dress and also a 3 piece suit for my hubby to be :)

  17. Helen says:

That dress just suits the bride so well. The groom also looks very cool, but not sure about his shoes… Why do so many men have such an issue with wearing nice shoes? You can tell a lot about a man by his shoes, that’s what I say! ;0)

I lurve the 12th shot in, its beautiful. The grooms shoes are cool too! Lovely photography
