Expert Veterinary Advice For Dogs At Weddings

There is no doubt that dogs are so much more than pets to their owners, with a staggering 99% of UK pet owners seeing their furry companion as part of the family, and a further 89% saying their dog provides them with emotional support.

With weddings being the ultimate celebration among family and friends, it’s no surprise that couples are keener than ever to have their dogs involved in their big day.

While it’s wholesome and heartwarming to have dogs play a role in your wedding, it’s important for pet owners to suitably prepare their pooches to avoid unnecessary stress and ensure the day runs smoothly.

Dr Rhian Littlehales BSc (Hons) BVSc CertAVP PgCert (VBM) MRCVS, Clinical Governance Director at Medivet, one of the UK’s leading veterinary groups, shares their expert advice:

Prepare your dog in advance: Train your dog to be comfortable around strangers and large crowds. Teaching them not to jump up at people avoids accidents like broken glasses, food mishaps, or muddy paw prints on wedding attire.
Factor in a safe space: Provide a quiet room or area with your dog’s bed and toys, away from the noise and excitement, to help them feel secure.
Provide access to water and food: Weddings are long and busy, so make sure your dog can rest, eat, and stay hydrated. Remind guests not to feed them table food.
Bring a dog sitter: Assign one trusted person to care for your dog throughout the day. This ensures consistency, reduces confusion, and gives you peace of mind.
Choose a suitable role: Not all roles fit every dog. Avoid giving them tasks involving flowers (many are toxic) and consider their temperament when deciding how they’ll be included. A calm presence is just as meaningful as a big role.
