What To Know About Lash Extensions For Your Wedding - Should You Get Them?

What Are Lash Extensions?

Lash extensions are semi-permanent individual lashes applied to your natural eyelashes with a strong glue adhesive to enhance their length, thickness, and overall appearance. They are typically made from materials like synthetic silk, mink, or faux mink. A technician applies each extension individually to your natural lashes using a special adhesive, ensuring a fuller, more voluminous look that lasts for several weeks. They're popular for those seeking a mascara-free, low-maintenance beauty routine. However, they do require a professional application and periodic maintenance, as the extensions shed with your natural lashes over time. Lash extensions can range from £50 to £150 depending on the look you’re going for and your technician’s experience.

What Are The Benefits of Lash Extensions?

Unlike waterproof mascara, individual adhesive lashes or strip lashes, lash extensions take away most of a bride's common concerns. You don’t need to worry about trying to grow your natural lashes and using expensive serums to do so. You don’t need to think about trialling different waterproof mascaras or worry about finding the best lash glue that will survive heat, sweat and/or tears.

1. Long-lasting

When taken care of properly (more on that later) lash extensions can last between 2-8 weeks depending on where you are in your lash cycle, application technique and other factors. But on the whole, these lashes will see you through every moment of your wedding day and beyond. These are perfect if you’re having a weekend wedding, a destination wedding or you’re going on your honeymoon very shortly after your wedding.

2. Customisable

Unlike strip lashes, lash extensions can be completely customised to the look you want whether that’s something wispy and natural or voluminous and bold. Using various lash techniques, your lash technician will be able to create a bespoke look for you.

3. Eye shape

Leading on from that, the lashes can be customised to suit your natural eye shape if you so desire. Offering a more flattering look or helping to enhance anything you want to focus on, lashes can be used to change or emphasise your eye shape.

4. More natural

Even though you may initially think that getting lash extensions for your wedding day is the least natural option compared to the other alternatives (also more on that later), then you’d actually be wrong. Although 3D Russian Volume lashes are available if you want them, lash extensions can also be very natural and offer a ‘your lashes, but better’ feel.

Tips To Get Your Lash Extensions To Be Perfect For Longer

  • Keep them dry 12 hours after application - Avoid getting water near your eyes as a whole but also steamy showers, hot cooking environments and any damp or humid spaces.
  • Lash trials and patch tests - It’s so important to get your lashes done in plenty of time in the lead-up to the wedding day to avoid any last-minute disasters or allergic reactions. Don’t skip that patch test!
  • Tell your makeup artist - Let your makeup artist know that you won’t need false lashes from them if you’re getting your makeup done professionally as some makeup artists will charge more for falsies.
  • Refills - Keeping up with refills is actually so key to ensuring you keep that fresh and fluttery look for as long as possible. No, your eyelash technician isn’t just saying this to keep you coming back, it’s true!
  • Avoid rubbing eyes - It sounds obvious but anything you do to aggravate that bond the glue has formed is going to weaken it.
  • Cleaning - In relation to the previous point, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be keeping your lash extensions clean. If you do wear eye makeup, make sure to remove it in its entirety every night. Brush through your lashes regularly.
  • Avoid oil-based products - Some eye makeup removers contain oil to help break down the makeup easier but this will also impact your glue. When removing makeup opt for water-based cleansers instead.

At-Home Lash Extensions

At home lash extensions are an option if you’re looking for more budget-friendly lashes as well as wanting to have complete control over the final look of your lashes. The most common frustration and downside that we see to lash extensions is when brides aren’t happy with the outcome due to miscommunication. There can be many different interpretations of terms like "natural," "voluminous," or "dramatic", which can result in extensions that don't align with your expectations. With at-home lashes, you’re completely in control of the desired look.

For the creative bride who dreams of a bespoke lash look, individual lashes offer unparalleled customisation. These lashes allow for the addition of volume or length exactly where needed, offering a truly tailored touch and we love these ARDELL lashes!

You might consider Bonded-Products’ eyelashes as a safer and more practical alternative to most at-home individual lashes. Elizabeth Chandler, owner and founder of Bonded-Products, brings over 15 years of experience in the lash industry and shares her expert insights. “Bonded lashes are designed to be super easy to apply, and their durability proves they are among the best pre-glued options available. The bond isn’t just at the base; it’s integrated within the lash, ensuring no damage during removal. It also means the lashes last a lot longer than most. They’re waterproof, tear-proof, and most importantly, weightless, making them so comfortable to wear.”

Why Choose Bonded-Products Eyelashes?

Elizabeth Chandler, owner and founder of Bonded-Products, says “The pre-glued system is designed for the least amount of faff with no waiting for drying time and no sticky situations. You can also apply them on the go, with or without mascara.  The lashes are also buildable so if you want to add more drama for an evening look, simply add a few more for extra volume in a single step. They're every bride's best friend.”

How To Find Your Eye Shape & Customise Your Lashes

The ultimate goal in any lash application is to create symmetry where it may be lacking. Lashes are an excellent tool for achieving this. Elizabeth Chandler points out how “lashes can create interest and distract from asymmetry and the wispiness of The Spiky , Soft Volume, and Natural  can help balance any discrepancies.” Take a look at Elizabeth Chandler’s advice below on how to achieve a flattering look with your lashes based on your eye shape.

Round - You will be able to see whites below the iris

Advice: Length at the outer corner is a great look and will create balance and drama, avoiding excessive length in the centre.

Protruding  - You will be able to see the entire lash from tip to root when looking directly in the mirror; you may even see the wet line when looking head-on.

Advice: Opt for short lashes with The Soft Volume from bonded-products at the base, avoiding length in the middle section.

Deep-set - Place tweezers or a pencil vertically along your brow line and cheek. If you can open and close your eyes without the lashes touching the tweezers, your eyes are deep set.

Advice: Choose longer lashes than you think you need. If your lashes are also straight, go for a curly lash.

Hooded - The mobile lid (where eyeshadow is applied) is not visible, as the skin droops over it. This may apply to one or both eyes.

Advice: A hooded eye will benefit from length placed directly under the most hooded area.

Downturned -  If you draw an imaginary line through the centre of the iris the outer corner will turn downward

Advice: Avoid excessive length at the outer corner to prevent a droopy look. Keep the length in the middle, dropping down a millimetre or two at the outer eye.

Upturned - If you draw an imaginary line through the centre of the iris, the outer corner of the eye turns upward.

Advice: If you want a cat eye look then go for it. For a more natural look, focus length on the outer third, climaxing before the last third, and then introduce slightly shorter lashes at the outer edge.

Close-set - The distance between your eyes is shorter than the width of one eye

Advice: Avoid busy lashes at the inner corner; concentrate on the outer corners.

Wide-set - The distance between your eyes is wider than the width of one eye.

Advice: Maintain a steady length throughout, avoiding excessive length at the outer corners.

Almond - Almond eyes have slightly raised outer corners that lift upwards and outwards. The iris touches both the top and bottom of the eyelid, with no white showing at the top or bottom.

Advice: Almond-shaped eyes can work with any style, but understanding the tilt (upturned, downturned, or classic) will guide your choice of length, often reducing or eliminating the need for mascara.

Alternative options to lash extensions

  • Lash lift and tint - Also known as LVL, this is a lash-lifting treatment that works by applying serums to lashes that help them hold a curl followed by a tint to give them a more striking colour. The result can last up to two months.
  • Waterproof mascara - Waterproof mascara is pretty much a given for weddings to ensure it lasts all day long and doesn’t cause any unwanted smudging. But it’s up to you (or your makeup artist) whether you choose to focus on lengthening the lashes or choosing a more voluminous mascara.
  • False eyelashes - As we mentioned, the most common alternative to lash extensions is a false lash, whether that be a strip lash or individual lashes. If you’re not too worried about wearing false lashes after the wedding day, this will be the best option for you to still achieve a more glam and elevated everyday look. If you are having a makeup artist, they’ll have plenty of styles you can work with.
  • A combination of two or more of these - If the super natural look is your thing, going for a lash lift and then using a waterproof mascara on the wedding day might be for you. At the same time, using mascara on your natural lashes and then applying some falsies just to the outer corners of your eye for more of a cat-eye look could be another option. Just have fun creating the look you want!
