Nic Shuttleworth Photography

Nic and I met in an art context: I was teaching a family workshop at The Hepworth Wakefield and Nic came along with her children and friends. We connected immediately and exchanged details with the view to a future art-related collaboration. Later that day I started following Nic on Instagram and I knew there was a fundamental reason why we'd connected: I LOVE Nic’s particular practice. Nic is an amazing photographer whose photos document, focus on interactions between people, tell stories, remain true to what’s happening, and capture moments in their natural context in a beautifully authentic and sensitive way. Nic is very much an artist who immerses herself in her projects with a process-focused approach. This coincides with my artistic practice and we see eye-to-eye on how the documentation of something happening IS THE ART. So, about a year later after first meeting in the gallery, there was absolutely no doubt: Nic would be the best photographer for our wedding. I was so delighted when Nic accepted the job and I knew for certain that her documentary approach would be perfect for us. And it's not just about the way Nic takes pictures - it’s also about WHO she is. Nic is so calm, organised, reliable, trustworthy and great-humoured - she's just so wonderful to be around in emotionally-heightened situations and she is so sensitive to how people experience their events. This is a part of her job that she takes very seriously and it feeds into her work. She is highly intuitive and knows exactly where to be and when, and understands the needs of her photography subjects. Nic has a clever knack of being everywhere without being intrusive, and pads about silently like a ninja! On the morning of our wedding, Nic arrived early and documented our bridal prep at my parents’ house. Not only were some of my favourite photos of my parents and my chief bridesmaid taken at this time, but also Nic's presence was very calming and lightened the mood for my anxious Mum and Dad. During the ceremony and the tea and speeches in the chapel afterwards, Nic managed to place herself in all the right places at all the right times, and captured our marriage and celebration so beautifully. We never wanted the posed line-ups of traditional wedding photo shoots, and we knew that Nic would take the natural, story-telling photos that we wanted instead. Nic absolutely nailed it, and we are so delighted with our photos. The online gallery is superb and we are trying to choose the photos we want enlarged - it’s difficult to narrow it down- there are so many we love! We also loved having Nic there as a beautiful, special person to be around, and we cannot recommend Nic highly enough for a sensitive, authentic, careful documentation of any special event. We also know that Nic puts A LOT of time and care into crafting and editing the online gallery, and it means a lot that she puts so much subjective investment into how she photographs the day AND how she carries out her post-production. Thank you again, Nic, for creating such a beautiful piece of documentation of our amazingly happy day.
