You Don’t Have To Have A Naked Wedding Cake…

The rise of wedding blogs has been responsible for many, many trends – bunting, log slice table decor, brides in Converse, Vintage VW campers at weddings, but nothing has taken off quite as prolifically as the NAKED. WEDDING. CAKE. While the others have thankfully come and gone, the naked cake is here to stay. If you don’t know what a naked wedding cake is, then you’ve clearly never visited Pinterest. In which case, the question probably needs to be asked – are you even human?! But given we’re all friends here, I’ll humour you – a naked wedding cake is a cake without icing, so those sexy soft layers of sponge and oozing buttercream are on show for everyone to ogle. They really do look delicious and inviting and we love a naked cake as much as the next person, but today we’re revelling in those cakes with more class and sophistication, the ones who like to leave a little to the imagination…

{Green & Glorious}

Having an iced wedding cake opens up a world of possibility with colour. Ultimately, a naked cake is always going to be buttercream and sponge coloured, whereas icing can be matched perfectly to the rest of your wedding decor. While green isn’t for everyone, there’s no denying how fresh and zingy these beautiful cakes look. All handcrafted by members of The List, RMW’s handpicked wedding supplier directory, these cakes certainly make heads turn. Whether you embrace all over colour, or opt for a tonal palette, they look beautiful.

{Perfectly Pink}

Another draw back to the naked cake is that the ‘unfinished’ look is always going to give off a rustic vibe. With an iced cake, there’s more scope for elegance. Much more fitting for wedding venues that aren’t barns. Just take this bevy of pink beauties for example – each cake looks too good to eat, but given that they’ve been made by the UK’s best cake makers, I’d seriously advise that you break this rule and try some 😉

{Creative Genius}

When it comes to taking your wedding styling to the next level, texture is key and this applies to cakes too. Using icing on your wedding cake really allows your cake maker to bring another dimension to your cake. Whether that’s with ruffled or marbled icing, chocolate bark, buttercream or royal icing, each element can transform the look of a cake.

So what do you think? Are you having an iced cake for the big day? Don’t get me wrong, I still love a naked cake, but I’m excited to see the next wedding cake trends break through! If you’re looking for your dream cake maker, then do visit The List, each baker has been chosen by the RMW team so you know you’re in safe hands. With these talented creatives you really can have your cake and eat it.

  1. Absolutely love your suggestions for iced wedding cakes! Naked cake are very charming of course but possibilities iced cakes give you are just unbelievable…

  2. A cake is a great way to add some of your own personality into a wedding and for it not to look the same as ever one else ( also gives the photographer extra photos to capture)
