Niamh & Merv

We’re taking you off to an intimate orchard for an outdoor humanist ceremony, but luckily for us we don’t have to endure the torrential rain guests did before the heavens decided to clear and the ceremony was able to begin. Every cloud has a silver lining they say and this silver lining brought a beautiful double rainbow to mark the celebration.

Guests travelled by tractor up to the reception marquee in a field and enjoyed plenty of live music and garden games including a bit of beer pong! The marquee was beautifully decorated with glass jars filled with wild flowers, bunting and more and created the perfect rustic venue.

Niamh and Merv and their wedding party looked absolutely fabulous in all their attire. Niamh’s fitted satin Charlie Brear wedding gown and bespoke veil suited her perfectly and there was clearly a lot of thought gone into everyone’s outfits.

A relaxed, fun, happy day with lots of charm and personal touches.

Bridal Outfit

Niamh The Bride: I wanted something very simple with a vintage twist – the veil from Minna really added to my Charlie Brear wedding dress. The veil was drawn by myself and the designer at Minna.

The Grooms Attire

Merv wanted something that he would have forever and wear again. He splashed out on a bespoke suit made by Cad and Dandy and it was worth every penny. The experience of visiting the suit makers and seeing how your outfit developed was really special.

The Venue

We wanted to be outside and New Barn Farm, Carlton Bedfordshire fitted the bill with a beautiful orchard for our humanist ceremony. The orchard was set at the side of a public bridleway – anyone could have walked past but we didn’t care, we thought that would make it more special. The reception was on a wide open field with tents scattered along the side – we have many nieces and nephews and friends with children and we wanted them to have the best day so we made sure that there was open space, freedom and games for them to enjoy.

Colour Scheme/Decor

This took a long time to develop – the invitations with the yellow balloons helped us to stick with a yellow theme although our colours in general just needed to be bright and fun. We wanted our guests to be 100% relaxed. We had colourful confetti in handmade cones and a table of colourful paper cups with a vintage drinks jar for guests to have some lemonade before the ceremony. The reception area was completely decorated by us. The outside space had hay bales and colourful blankets/materials. Our marquee worked out perfectly, to fit with the rustic, vintage theme we went with an old style canvas marquee. Lighting was given with small bulbs and lots of candles. The marquee was decorated with bunting, balloons, colourful table runners and beautiful flowers. The rustic tables and chairs really brought the theme to life.

The Flowers

We wanted rustic, forest flowers that looked like that had been picked and bundled up that morning. The flowers by Fieldgate Flowers were really magical and brought every element of the decor together.

The Wedding Party Fashion

We wanted to get wedding party clothes that would be worn again and would help the wedding party feel relaxed and in theme with a farm wedding. We chose made to order dresses from Etsy for the Bridemaids and smart/casual wear from hughstreet shops for the Groomsmen.

The Ceremony

The whole ceremony was so special. We choose to have a humanist wedding in an orchard set just off a public bridalway that led up to the farm. We always wanted to have our ceremony outside – the weather was looking good so benches and flowers were arranged perfectly just infront of a tree. The rain came about 30 minutes before the ceremony – everyone (apart from the bride!) got soaked! Luckily we had a small “back-up” marquee in another part of the orchard….everyone huddled under here whilst they surrounded me and Merv during the ceremony. Our humanist ceremony consisted of the pagan tradition of hand-fasting. As soon as we exchanged rings the sun came out – it was a very special moment!

Entertainment

We love live music and were determined to be able to have live music for both drinks reception and party. Our love of bluegrass, country, blues and swing made sure we chose bands of this genre. Hokum Hotshots were the perfect drinks reception band – they were lively, fun but not intrusive. Everyone enjoyed the music. Flats and Sharps were great fun – we couldn’t stop people dancing during the sound check so we knew we were in for a good night!

Food

We are very passionate about food and did not want a mass meal without heart and soul – Kemp and Kemp listened to our ideas about food and made items that weren’t even listed on their options. They were so accomadating and ensured that the food at our wedding was food that myself and Merv were passionate about. We decided on a family sharing style and people are still talking about it.

The Photographer

Our photographer was Charlotte Knee. She is a friend from a running club that the bride used to be a member of. Charlotte was incredible from the moment we contacted her through to receiving our beautiful photos. She captured the day in such a way that it brings it to life every time we look at the photos. She was non intrusive and didn’t feel like she was in the way. She is very good with children and we were delighted that she took such wonderful pictures of them.
