In Case It Gets Emotional.

RMW readers Holly and Dan planned their idyllic North Yorkshire countryside W-day all the way from Barcelona where they were living at the time. Obviously quite a challenge, especially when your wedding party are hundreds of miles away.

However, this did mean that Holly due to time and location constraints ended up finding THE most perfect Vera Wang gown….sometimes these things are just meant to be.

Loving the grey and yellow colour scheme and the ridiculously cool page boys, I would very much like a pair of those braces please. And I have included the menu image HUGE so you can all have a butchers – it is particularly delicious.

Budget Savvy

My veil turned into a bit of a task! There was a matching veil to my dress, and it was gorgeous, but also super expensive and based on the fact that I knew I would mainly only wear it in the church, not justifiable at all! So I set upon finding something like it, which didn’t prove easy. Sue at Louella Bride Leeds (where we also bought the bridesmaid dresses) was wonderful when I explained this to her and offered to have one made. It turned out wonderfully and was far better value!

For the wedding breakfast I replaced the veil with a Jenny Packham hairband (Cadeaux II) which was borrowed from my bridesmaid Elle. She had worn it at her own wedding in February and it was so stunning that I cheekily asked if I would be able to wear it too 😉 I was lucky enough that she said yes so it was my ‘something borrowed’, along with a beautiful pearl and diamond bracelet also borrowed from my Mum.

I blame a tough day at work for my shoe choice! I’m a heels girl, and like many brides I had my heart set on a pair of Jimmy Choos but really couldn’t justify the expense. I did a little search on ebay and stumbled across a brand new pair being sold by a bride who had changed her mind. I set the listing on watch and forgot all about it, until one night late at work my phone popped up with a listing ending warning. Needing a bit of retail therapy, I put a bid in and 5 minutes later they were mine! They arrived as good as stated and for a fraction of the price. They were super high but they didn’t come off until 1am and even survived a trek through the fields for photos!

Yellow And Grey

Our colour scheme was always going to be grey – it’s Dan’s favourite colour! But, he did agree that we needed something to brighten it up and so I drew up a shortlist and he went for yellow – it seemed a bit brave but we both loved the summery combo!

So that he had something a little different to the groomsmen, my husband (!) chose a fitted 3 piece suit from Reiss in a slightly lighter grey, and teamed this with the same accessories as the others. Dan has quite a few Reiss suits for work/weddings, so there was little doubt that he would chose one of theirs for his wedding too, but he’s never had a 3 piece before so that made it more special than his usual look and I loved it. Although I was with him when he chose it, I didn’t see it post fittings or teamed up with rest of the outfit until the big day, and I thought that he just looked amazingly handsome stood at the end of the aisle!

I was quite nervous about the whole walk down the aisle part of our day (despite our tiny church and having my Dad to hold onto!) but once I clocked eyes with Dan, I completely forgot about making sure that I didn’t fall over and just couldn’t think about anything apart from how happy and lucky I was that I was about to become his wife!

Whimsical Wang

My dress was ‘Dinah’ by Vera Wang, purchased from Farah Novias in Barcelona. My Mum came out to Barcelona and we had a fabulous day trying on beautiful dresses but nothing jumped out as ‘the one’ and the stores put a bit of pressure on about timings, which wasn’t very comforting.

I was then recommended Farah Novias by a colleague at work and squeezed in an appointment during my lunch break on my Mum’s last day in Barcelona – I’m so glad we did! The ladies there are absolutely lovely and offer great advice. After trying a few different dresses they got a feel for what I was looking for and then brought out ‘my’ dress and I instantly felt excited just seeing it in the bag. When I put it on my Mum and I just looked at each other and said ‘yes’ simultaneously – with a few tears.

Durable Beauty

The brilliant Julian Holland from The Mark Hill Salon in Kirkella (my home village), did my hair on the day, along with the Mum’s and older bridesmaids, assisted by his lovely fiancée Sophie, and they did such a wonderful job on all of us. I wanted my hair up but not to look too ‘done’ to go with the rustic feel and so we went for a loose curl up-do. As I have pretty fine hair and despite growing it for what felt like forever, this look was quite a feat but Julian nailed it at the first trial and I was so happy with it on the day!

For make up I was recommended Rebecca Longthorp and she was fantastic. I wanted quite a natural look – basically myself but on a really good day! She took time to learn what I wanted at the trial and I knew it was long lasting when post trial it still looked great after a flight back to Barcelona and a sleep on route! It was as durable on the day too!

Stealing The Limelight

My two older bridesmaids (my best friend Elle, and my sister-in-law Mel) wore TwoBirds dresses in grey. Mel was over 6 months pregnant at the wedding and these dresses work perfectly with or without a bump – both the girls looked absolutely stunning in them and it was the only dress they tried on, easy peasy! We got them from Louella Bride in Leeds and Sue and the team there are fantastic.

We also had our gorgeous two little nephews Ted and Alfie as pageboys and finding their outfits was one of the most fun parts of the wedding! We didn’t want them to look or feel uncomfortable in a traditional suit so went for a more continental look of smart shorts (River Island) and shirt (Zara), teamed with some Converse! Their bow ties and braces were from a fabulous Etsy supplier (DivineDomestication) who custom made them in the right colours. They looked absolutely adorable and stole quite a few hearts that day!

Beautifully Bright

I really wanted to have a lot of flowers for décor – I love them! That said I’m no expert on types of flowers, I just wanted them to look beautifully bright, rustic, hand picked and incorporate our colour theme.

We used the local florist Busy Liz’s and Liz and her Mum Maureen were brilliant. We showed them lots of photos of the types of style we were looking for and the only specific flowers we requested were craspedidia’s (great with our colour theme) and David Austin roses in the bouquets as I love those! They organised all of the bridal party flowers, as well as the displays in the church and the PapaKata, which was a lot of work but they did a tremendous job and the flowers were everything we hoped for.

For the table centrepieces, we had a mixture of tall glass vases filled with big displays, and flower rings surrounding hurricane vases filled with candles. We also dotted small tea light holders of flowers and candles everywhere. We sourced all the glassware from Ikea and the next day we gave these to people who had helped us as a momento of the day – it’s really nice to now see them as part of their home when we visit!

Our cake was made by Lucy Beal Bakery, an old school friend of mine, who is very talented at making delicious and beautiful cakes, all 100% from scratch. Dan was surprisingly very involved not only in the choice of flavours, but also the design itself, and when we went to see Lucy he asked her to combine two different designs which was new news to me but worked brilliantly!

Our brief was not to make it ‘too’ perfect so it would be in keeping with our rustic theme, and Lucy took everything on board and created our perfect cake. It had 4 different favourite flavours and it tasted amazing too!

RMW Inspired

Dan and I aren’t huge fans of traditional favours as we often feel that they go to waste, which is such as shame when so much time and effort is put into them. Instead, we decided to make a contribution to the Alzheimer’s Society on behalf of our guests, and in memory of both of our Nanas who unfortunately couldn’t be at our wedding, but played a huge part in our lives. All the guests received a pin badge and it was great to see so many of them wearing them, and we also placed donation boxes on the bar which raised over £300 which was fantastic.

RMW played a huge part in our décor decisions as during the course of our engagement I collected so many ideas from all the amazing real wedding stories, and used these to piece together the look for our day. I ordered all of the materials online, and we arrived at my parents to tons of boxes – it was like Christmas day! The day before the wedding we then had to put the picture I had in mind into reality, and I have to say, all of our wedding party and Anna from The Star really pulled it out of the bag to get it ready in time, and we were so pleased with the final result!

Amazing Moments

Our photographers were the brilliant Christian and Erica Ward and this was one of the best decisions we made. They were actually recommended to us by another photographer we approached who was unavailable and we’re so glad that he pointed us in their direction, they were such a find! We loved the brightness of the photos in their portfolio and the amazing natural moments they capture. After a Skype introduction we were absolutely sold. Apart from having wonderful photos it was really important to us that the photographers blended into the wedding, weren’t too bossy, and didn’t steal too much of our time away from our guests, and Christian and Erica were fantastic at this.

Some of my favourite memories of our day are of Dan & I having our portrait shots done, as it was an opportunity for us to have a bit of time just the two of us and revel in the magic of the day, we completely forgot that Christian and Erica were there at times! We had two short portrait sessions instead of one, and this was great as it meant that they captured two completely different times of the day, and that we weren’t away from the celebrations doing photos for too long at one time. We absolutely love our photos, so much so that choosing the shortlist for the album was an absolute mission but we received it just before Christmas and its amazing!!

Recommending Ruby

Dan and I wanted music to play quite a big part in our day, and had our heart set on a sololist singing one of our favourite songs during the ceremony, as well as having a live band for the evening party. We managed to find Ruby Miller through Silverdog music online, and from her demos we were really impressed, plus her set list had something for everyone and included a lot of our favourites. Ruby was able to provide all the music throughout the day, from singing in the church, to an acoustic guitar set during the drinks reception, and then a full band party set in the evening. Her voice is really fantastic – she brought people to tears during the ceremony and kept the dance floor full all night, so we couldn’t have asked for more.

Our first dance was one of our tougher decisions for the wedding as we had quite a few to chose from, but we finally settled on You’ve Got The Love. We’ve always loved this song, have great memories of seeing Florence play it live, and it was upbeat enough for us to ´try´ to dance to!! I say ‘try’ as one of the only wedding ‘to-do’ list items that didn’t get ticked off was ‘practice first dance’ and it showed, but we loved it all the same! We decided to incorporate our other shortlist songs into the rest of the day by having Chasing Cars and Better Together in the wedding ceremony and also Let’s Stay Together as the final song of the band set. All four songs will now forever be ‘our songs’!

Enjoy Every Minute

Our wedding was more than we could have ever hoped for, and ultimately it was because we were surrounded by our wonderful family and friends, celebrating the start of the rest of our lives, which in itself is an absolutely magical experience! Living abroad means that we don’t get to see our loved ones nearly as much as we would like, so having them all together to share in our day was just amazing.

I’d definitely advise to enjoy all the fun that wedding planning brings, and don’t let it become stressful or overwhelming as what really matters at the end of the day, is that you become Mr & Mrs! We had to make quick decisions and do a few things last minute, but I’m so pleased that we did as it meant that we went with our gut feel which was ultimately right. Yes, I had a few last minute wobbles, and with more time I might have even changed things, but looking back now there was definitely no need. I’d also recommend that you accept help, because you certainly can’t do it on your own! We couldn’t have made our day what it was without the amazing support of our parents, family and friends.

On the day itself, make the most of the moments you get to spend alone together to let the fact that you’ve just got married sink in, and take time to take a step back and soak up the atmosphere around you. As everyone says, it really does just go far too fast, so enjoy every minute. We had a meal on the Friday evening and a BBQ on the Sunday for guests that could make it, which continued the celebrations and gave us more time with our guests. If you can extend the day, we’d definitely recommend it, as once it’s over, you’ll just want to do it all over again! I’m already asking Dan when we can do it again as it really is the very best day of your life!

  1. Well where do you start with this gorgeous day!

Those shoes are simply immense. And I love the traditional sixpence in there for luck. Even better that they were an ebay bargain!

The hairband is epic. And I love that Holly changed into it later in the day, giving her two different looks. Are any of you planning on doing the same?

The flowers girls hair crown is gorgeous. As are the older maids dresses. So versatile.

Loving the stationery. and you know how I feel about a wedding that gives back. The charity aspect sings to my heart.

    Congratulations on a gorgeous day

  2. Oh my! The pageboys have stolen a little piece of my heart and run away with it.

And I always go gaga for a supersized balloon especially when they’re as sunshiny yellow as Holly and Dan’s are.

But it’s the bouquet and the Wang that set my heart racing – just blinking gorgeous!

  3. What a gorgeous wedding! I love love love the colour scheme, and the bride’s bouquet is so pretty! The page boys are just far too adorable. And Holly’s dress. . . . .STUNNING! This wedding has put a big sunshine-yellow-loving smile on my face 🙂

  4. Eeek….it’s super strange to see yourself on these pages!! I honestly can’t thank RMW readers enough for all the ideas we ‘stole with pride’ for our day!
Thank you for featuring us Charlotte and for all your lovely comments above ladies – we had such an amazing day and I wish all you brides-to-be the same.
I’m currently trying to emotionally detach from my dress, but I do want it to have another happy story so will be popping it on RMW very soon!! Pleased you like it as much as I do! Just wish there was a reason to wear it again 😉

  5. @Holly – It was an absolute pleasure to have you! I am almost tempted to put an offer in for your dress myself (!)

So lovely to see all the ideas you stole with pride 🙂

  6. What a gorgeous wedding. I love the bride’s dress – and it’s great that she got to find it with her mum! (that bit really made me go “awww!”). The colour scheme is gorgeous, it’s so fresh and bright, I love the grey suits too, I think the gents look very handsome in them! All those styling details are fantastic, so much thought and love!

  7. What a stunning wedding! The dress & the page boys made me go super gooey… We’ve organised most of our wedding from Barcelona too and it’s encouraging to see how stunning this wedding is even with all the long distance organising!
Where did you get those beautiful balloons from? They made the most gorgeous romantic photographs! x

  8. @ Gabi – another Barcelona bride planner! There were times when I thought ‘why aren’t we just doing it here!’ but it was all so worth it, and so nice to have a truly English day (with a few Spanish touches)!
Re the balloons – they are from the very glamourous sounding click for warehouse, but were exactely what we were looking for! (
Good luck for your big day! x

  9. Holly and Dan were an absolute dream to work with and we loved photographing their wedding! It’s a very special privilege to meet such lovely people, who are so in love with one another, and who are so excited about creating beautiful photographs on their wedding day 🙂 Thank you both, and thanks also to the RMW team for featuring!

  10. Loved your wedding – really beautiful colours and the menu made me hungry just looking at it!

Really loved your table plan – did you do that yourself or did someone else do it for you? You see, I might be stealing that idea from you, in the great tradition of RMW.

  11. Hi Holly, a gorgeous wedding! If you read this and are interested in selling on the braces and bow ties let me know! So cute and I have the sane colour scheme and page boy about same age.

  12. @Charlotte – please feel free to steal with approval for the table plan 😉 It was a DIY effort, we ordered a poster from UrbanFootprintDesign on Etsy which they amended into our colour scheme. We then stuck this onto a spray painted canvas box board and surrounded it with the table details (utilising the inside of our orders of sevice). Dan and the best man finished it about 5 minutes before the wedding rehearsal – thankfully the rush job doesn’t show! x
@Abi – pleased that you love the boys outfits! They’ve actually worn the ties and braces quite a few times since for parties etc – any excuse to rock them really, too cool to be kept in a drawer! So i’m not sure how fresh they now are, sorry! The Etsy supplier was great though and quite speedy delivery x

  13. For Kate, or any other ladies that may be interested in my dress for their day – it’s now live on the Sell My Dress tab above. Another wedding day awaits it….

    1. Holly – thanks so much for the tip about the table plan! Will definitely get in touch with UrbanFootprintDesign.

  14. Awww! It’s so lovely looking through you wedding photos! It was a beautiful wedding and a pleasure to look after you all!
Hope your both well! Almost a year ago! Wow!!!

  15. Hi Holly,

Did you have any issues with the church for this wedding since you were planning from Barcelona?

    Thanks!!! x
